Recorded at Polar Studios, Stockholm. Mixed at Maison Rouge Studios, London.

Mike Rutherford's first solo album is awash with sounds, but no melodies. From the first note, there's a layering of keyboards and guitars flows, much like on '70s Genesis albums. There are also intricate instrumental passages, again similar to Genesis. The difference lies in Rutherford's inability to produce even one memorable song on this disc. The production is flawed by David Hentschel, whose dense sound also marred the Genesis albums And Then There Were Three and Duke. Chances are even a die-hard Genesis or Mike Rutherford fan can find a better way to spend 15 bucks.

Steve McMullen - All Music Guide

Smallcreep's Day is the first solo album by Genesis bassist and guitarist Mike Rutherford. It was released in 1980, and reached number 13 in the UK Albums Chart.

The album was produced by David Hentschel, who also produced the Genesis album Duke the same year. Anthony Phillips, Rutherford's original songwriting partner in Genesis, plays keyboards on the album. It was recorded at ABBA's Polar Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, for tax purposes, in the autumn of 1979. The title suite (occupying side 1 of the original European vinyl version and side 2 of the original US vinyl version) is based on the dark, surrealist novel of the same name by Peter Currell Brown, adapted by Rutherford to have a happy ending. Former Genesis bandmate Steve Hackett telephoned Rutherford and told him that Smallcreeps's Day sounded like a great album and was liked by Chester Thompson also. A live version of "Out into the Daylight" was covered by Italian band Elio e le Storie Tese. A song that had used Hackett's tapping style of guitar playing.

Rutherford has said that the album was unexpectedly difficult to create, as he had never before realised the extent to which he relied on the other members of Genesis to help make decisions and handle certain aspects of the music. However, he added that it was a good learning experience for him, since it forced him to learn more about vocals, drums, and keyboards than he had known before.

Steve McMullen, a record store owner and contributor to Allmusic thoroughly panned the album in a retrospective review, saying that Mike Rutherford was incapable of writing "even one memorable song". He also claimed that David Hentschel's production work had marred the Genesis albums Duke and ...And Then There Were Three..., and that it had similarly flawed Smallcreep's Day. Users of the online music guide seem to disagree however, giving the album a four out of five star rating.
