Guitar virtuoso and rock legend, Steve Hackett (formerly of Genesis), releases his latest album The Night Siren on 24th March 2017 through InsideOut Music (Sony). As implied in the title, The Night Siren is a wake-up call... the warning of a siren sounding in this era of strife and division.

The Night Siren showcases Steve's incredible guitar playing as strongly as ever, along with regular Hackett collaborators and also musicians from several different countries who Steve invited to join him in celebrating multicultural diversity and unity. This includes singers from Israel and Palestine, who both actively campaign to bring Jewish and Arabic people together. There are also instrumentals from the USA and Iraq and a multiplicity of sounds, including the exotic strains of Indian sitar and Middle Eastern tar and oud, the ethnic beauty of the Peruvian charango and the haunting Celtic Uilleann pipes.

Steve is widely travelled, making friends everywhere he goes and has always embraced multicultural diversity. In these times of unrest, he has been inspired to express his belief that the world needs more empathy and unity. His wish to involve a range of musical sounds, instruments, musicians and singers from different parts of the world is both a development of his eclectic approach to music and shows how people can be brought together, even from war torn regions.

Talking about his latest work, Steve says, "This latest waxing represents a bird's eye view of the world of a musical migrant ignoring borders and celebrating our common ancestry with a unity of spirit, featuring musicians, singers and instruments from all over the world. From territorial frontiers to walled-up gateways, boundaries often hold back the tide. But while the night siren wails, music breaches all defences. To quote Plato, 'When the music changes, the walls of the city shake'."

The musical journey takes us from 'Behind the Smoke', focusing on the plight of refugees throughout the ages, to the penultimate track 'West to East' which reflects on the damage of war and the hope for a better world. From personal to universal, the themes celebrate the life force, breaking free from chains of repression.

Steve Hackett is returning with an exciting new show Genesis Revisited with Classic Hackett for a 15 date UK tour in April 2017. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the classic Genesis album Wind and Wuthering, Steve and his band will be performing several tracks from the album as well as fan favourites such as 'The Musical Box' and other Genesis and solo numbers never performed before by Steve's band including 'Inside & Out,' 'One For The Vine' and 'Anyway' as well as material from The Night Siren.

The Night Siren is the twenty-fifth studio album from English guitarist Steve Hackett, released on 24 March 2017 by Inside Out Music.

Much of the album was recorded within one year;[1] some of the material dates back from recording sessions for Hackett's previous studio album, Wolflight (2015).[2] Hackett explained that his writing comes from a three-person team of himself, his wife Jo, and his keyboardist and co-producer Roger King, with Hackett discussing and exchanging initial music and lyric ideas with the other two. When an idea is settled upon, music would be sent to the other performers or Hackett would travel to them and have their parts recorded on location.[1] Hackett recorded the album by means of recording straight to a computer, rather than recording from an amplifier as he likes "to be able to have a conversation over the top of it and it can still sound very heavy". By connecting his amplifier and pedal board to the computer, Hackett experiments by "trying as many different setups and sounds as possible".[1]

The album features numerous artists and instruments from a variety of countries, including vocalists Kobi Farhi and Mīrā ‘Awaḍ, from Israel and Palestine respectively, and a sitar from India, a tar from the Middle East, the charango from Peru, which Hackett brought home after visiting the country,[1] and the uilleann pipes from Ireland.[3] Hackett did not intend to incorporate such elements of middle eastern and world music at first, but his interest in such music had started in the 1960s and realised the album began to take such a direction when the songs were being developed further.[1] Parts of the album was recorded in Sardinia and Hungary, and involved a session of musicians from Iceland, Azerbaijan, Israel and Palestine working side by side, "proving that it is possible for people not to just coexist in peace but also do something extraordinary artistically together".[1]

Hackett had been working on his singing "since 1981" and marks his vocals on The Night Siren as the first time he "actually felt like a vocalist" and cited the style of American singer Tim Rose as an influence.[2] Hackett describes the album as "a bird's eye view of the world of a musical migrant ignoring borders and celebrating our common ancestry with a unity of spirit, featuring musicians, singers and instruments from all over the world. Some sections on the album were longer than what appeared in the final version, leaving Hackett to edit them down as he noticed a "sense of let's get to the point" and had been prone to develop long sections or song introductions in the past. He intended to make a more accessible album, and after listening back to it, enjoyed making it.[5] "Behind the Smoke" centres around the historical plight of refugees. "West to East" reflects on the effects of war and hope for a better world,[3] and features orchestral and choral arrangements.[1] Hackett sees the two tracks as companions to each other; the former originated from a lyric that his wife Jo came up with: "Behind the smoke it's black".[5] Hackett's brother John Hackett plays the flute on some tracks.[1] "Anything But Love" contains a mixture of styles, opening with flamenco guitar to become a rock song with an electric guitar solo to finish. The change of style and joining them together in the studio was particularly demanding.[1]

On the composition, Hackett adds, "we've got 20 people from all around the world all working together ... although it's a rock album there are some big differences." The album also contains influences from the Beatles' psychedelia phase and classic science fiction. The album was released on 24 March 2017 through Inside Out Music,[4][7] available on CD, a double vinyl set with a CD, a digital download, and a special edition CD and Blu-ray, featuring a 5.1 surround sound mix and a "making of" documentary."In the Skeleton Gallery" was released on 4 February 2017. Hackett is supporting the album with his Genesis Revisited with Classic Hackett Tour through 2017, to commemorate the album and the fortieth anniversary of Wind & Wuthering (1976), the last Genesis studio album recorded with Hackett in the band.

Neben langjährigen Musikerkumpanen wie Roger King oder Rob Townsend hat Steve Hackett für sein neues Album Musiker aus aller Herren Länder, u.a. aus Israel und Palästina, Island und Aserbaidschan, zu den Aufnahmen von 'The Night Siren' geladen. Das führt zu einem regen musikalischen Treiben, das durchaus auch als Weckruf verstanden werden will, denn es geht in den Texten um aktuelle Dinge, etwa das Schicksal von Flüchtlingen über Jahrhunderte hinweg, die Zerstörungen durch Kriege, das Sehnen nach einer besseren Welt. Von klassischem Progressive Rock über Weltmusik bis hin zu Folk und Flamenco-Klängen reicht das musikalische Spektrum, das Hackett auf dem neuen Album abdeckt, und das gelingt dem versierten Musiker und Gitarristen hier ohne große Mühe. Sehr entspannt kommen die elf Tracks mit recht normalen Laufzeiten daher, was sicherlich die unangestrengte Wirkung zusätzlich fördert. Spannend auch, wie es Hackett gelingt, sich sehr zurück zu nehmen und Teil eines Ganzen aus vielen kleinen Komponenten zu werden.

In Hacketts Verständnis von progressiver Rockmusik gibt es keine genauen Regeln wie diese klingen müsse 'alles kann passieren, jederzeit. Und genau das ist hier der Fall', wird er im Presseinfo zitiert. Es ist für den Hackett-Sound charakteristisch, dass er gern Elemente unterschiedlichster Musikstile wie Jazz, Blues, Rock, AOR, Klassik oder der sogenannten Weltmusik aufgreift und diese in besonderer Weise miteinander verschmilzt. Hackett, der sich selber als Europäer, nicht als Brexiter versteht, wollte eine Art globale Entgegnung auf das derzeitige negative Klima von Abschottung und Ausgrenzung erschaffen - mit Musik und Musikern aus unterschiedlichen Ländern, die seinen typischen Stil zusätzlich noch bereichern.. So erinnert etwa das schwungvolle 'Martian Sea' in Teilen an beatleske Indienklänge von 'Tomorrow never knows'. In 'Inca Terra' wiederum fühlt man sich phasenweise durch den mehrstimmigen Gesang an Yes erinnert; gegen Ende der Nummer allerdings erklingt ein Didgeridoo - alles kann passieren. Ob Hacketts Flamenco-Gitarre in 'Anything but Love', die von Malik Mansurov aus Aserbaidschan gespielte Tar in 'Behind the Smoke' oder der irische Dudellsack beigetragen von Troy Donockley gegen Ende des phasenweise folkigen oder folkrockigen 'In Another Life' - er hat auf seinen umfangreichen Reisen kulturelle Vielfalt kennen und schätzen gelernt. Und er verbindet all diese Elemente in seiner Musik, ohne Gefahr zu laufen, die Songs dadurch zu überladen. Die wunderschöne Ballade 'Other Side of the Wall' erinnert in den ersten Strophen des Gesangs zunächst an 'Leningrad' von Billy Joel - vielleicht auch aufgrund einer Assoziation mit der bipolaren Weltordnung bis in die 1990er Jahre durch beide Titel. In dem schwelgerischen und hoffnungsvollen 'West to East' schließlich singen eine israelische und eine palästinensische Sängerin von Gemeinschaft und Frieden: 'Be at one, be at Peace, shine a Light from West to East.' Großartig! Mehr davon!

Break Out



Weltmusik nimmt im Wirken von Gitarrengenius Steve Hackett einen großen Platz ein. Sowohl das Hantieren mit verschiedenen Stilen als auch die Integration internationaler Sounds bestimmen sein musikalisches Denken seit den Anfangstagen mit Genesis.

Der Titel "The Night Siren" spielt programmatisch auf den Odysseus-Mythos an. Entsprechend zieren das ansonsten unspektakuläre Artwork zwei Klippen, wie sie auch in der griechischen Sagenwelt vorkommen. Um eine Brücke zur heutigen Zeit zu schlagen, stehen die Sirenen Pate für Extremismus und Intoleranz, die in ihrer populistischen Diktion umso leichter verfangen. Hacketts Antwort auf die Frage nach einem besseren Miteinander lautet 'Vielfalt in Einheit'. Das einende Band ist natürlich die Musik in ihrer universellen Verständlichkeit. Die Vielfalt belegen sowohl die Gästeliste als auch die verschiedenen Themen der Songs.

Langjährige Weggefährten wie Roger King (The Mute Gods) oder Gary O'Toole bilden gemeinsam mit Hackett den Kern. Ergänzung erfährt die Stammbesetzung um Szenegrößen wie Nick D'Virgilio (Ex-Spock's Beard), Nad Sylvan ("Genesis Revisited") oder Kobi Farhi (Orphaned Land) sowie Instrumentalisten aus aller Herren Länder, darunter Nightwishs Troy Donockley, die den Songs unterschiedliche Klangfarben verleihen.

In "Fifty Miles From The North Pole" illustrieren Didgeridoo und Trompete die schroff-schillernde Landschaft Islands unter der eisigen Sonne. Duduk, Tar und Oud geben "Behind The Smoke", einem Song zur Flüchtlingsbewegung, oder "West To East", das den Israeli Farhi und die Palästinenserin Mira Awad am Mikro vereint, das entsprechende Kolorit. Die Story über einen schottischen Clan ("In Another Life") endet stilecht, aber nicht unbedingt stilsicher mit einem Dudelsack. Einige zielsicher ins Schwarze treffende Riffs der Marke Led Zeppelin oder Iron Maiden sorgen für die nötige Würze.

Leider wirken die Song-Collagen nicht immer in sich stimmig. Die Schotten-Nummer beginnt mit tollen Folk-Gitarren, mündet dann in ein poppiges Allerweltsthema, bevor das oben angesprochene Dudelsack-Outro dem Ganzen die Narrenkappe aufsetzt.

Seine brillante, facettenreiche Gitarrenarbeit, die für Äonen von Gitarristen wie Alex Lifeson oder Brian May stilprägend war, führt Hackett in mehreren genialen Solipassagen vor, u.a. im auf der spanischen Gitarre zelebrierten Intro zu "Anything But Love". Danach kippt der Track jedoch in einen beliebigen Schunkelrock-Part, der den Kollegen von Genesis in den Achtzigern auch gut zu Gesicht gestanden hätte.

Auch die Sinfonik entpuppt sich als zweischneidiges Schwert und reicht von neoklassischen Klanggemälden bis hin zu aufgesetztem Geigen-Kitsch. Klar, die Musik firmiert unter dem Etikett Prog. Alles geht, nichts muss. Aber die Fallhöhe eines Parts in klassischer Genesis-Tradition hin zu Kitsch, Pomp und Pop ist einfach zu hoch. Neben Highlights wie den in sich schlüssigen ersten fünf Songs findet sich leider viel inkohärentes Stückwerk. So vielversprechend das weltumspannend-humanistische Motto 'Einheit in Vielfalt' auch klingt, musikalisch geht diese Internationale des Progrock nicht immer auf.
