With progressive rock (in its many forms) now seemingly more popular than ever, this collaboration from members of two of the godfathers of the genre is hugely exciting. Chris Squire has appeared on every Yes album since 1969 and is widely regarded as one of the most influential bass guitarists of all time. Now an established solo artist, Steve Hackett first came to prominence as the guitarist with genesis. He was with the band from 1970 To 1977 and played on six studio albums and featured on three live albums before leaving to concentrate on his solo career. The two met when Chris Squire was working on a solo album and needed some guitar parts. Chris was put in touch with Steve and through these sessions the idea for Squackett was born. Over four years in the making, the "Squackett” album is very much more than the sum of its parts. "It was very much about a bunch of pals swapping notes and anecdotes,” says Hackett "I think the material is simple and direct.” "It has a flavour to it that is reminiscent of a few things from different artists,” says Squire. "There is some clever prog rock stuff on the album, some jazzy bits, but there are parts that have vocal harmonies like Crosby, Stills and Nash” – Squackett is the major progressive rock release of 2012.

A Life Within a Day is the debut studio album by Squackett featuring Chris Squire (Yes) and Steve Hackett (ex-Genesis). It was released on 28 May 2012. The title track, "A Life Within a Day" won the 'Anthem' award at the 2012 Progressive Music Awards. The song "Aliens" began as a Yes song titled "Aliens (Are Only Us from the Future)" which was performed during the first leg of Yes' In the Present world tour,. Hackett had previously worked with Squire's bandmate Steve Howe in the band GTR.

In the history of popular music, supergroups have a spotty track record. For every winner, the landscape is littered with many more typically short-lived projects of varying degrees of quality and success. Arguably, they are weighed down by their egos, pedigree, and the high, and often unrealistic, expectations of absolute perfection - every album must be an utter masterpiece. But it usually doesn't worked out that way. Progressive rock in particular is rather notorious for its attempts at supergroups. Emerson Lake & Palmer rightfully took off, and the original Asia justifiably burned brightly for a short time, but others like GTR and Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe (four-fifths of Yes' classic Fragile lineup) fizzled after one wildly uneven (at best) album. With that in mind, it's certainly heartening to hear 2012's excellent A Life Within a Day by Squackett, the project from Yes bass guitarist Chris Squire and former Genesis and GTR guitarist Steve Hackett. A Life Within a Day leans toward highly melodic pop-flavored sounds but with plenty of the intricate twists and turns and occasional heaviness expected of progressive rock musicians. The liner notes cite the obvious Yes and Genesis influences, as well as that of Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. This music also radiates the sophisticated dreaminess of the Alan Parsons Project. Squire and Hackett share vocals, often with lots of harmonies; Squire's harmony backing vocals are a crucial but rarely acknowledged component of the Yes sound. Producer/keyboardist Roger King (a longtime member of Hackett's solo band), drummer Jeremy Stacey, and backing vocalist Amanda Lehmann round out the core of the Squackett band. The ever-changing arrangement of the dramatic and engaging opener "A Life Within a Day" gives the listener a taste of things to come. The hypnotic "Tall Ships," which originated as Squire was trying out a new bass guitar, gives Hackett the opportunity to stretch out on both classical and electric guitar runs. "Aliens" is a smoothly flowing hybrid of progressive rock and pop. A quirky arrangement drives "Sea of Smiles," but the catchy chorus and Hackett's brightly distorted guitar tie it all together. The outstanding "Stormchaser" - definitely the most Led Zeppelin-influenced song on the album - hammers home a steady midtempo rumble with rigid guitar riffs and ghostly keyboards. The ethereal "Can't Stop the Rain" is highlighted by Lehmann's backing vocals. As indispensable members of the mightiest titanic groups in progressive rock, expectations were bound to be high; simply put, Squackett's A Life Within a Day exceeds expectations and is a worthy addition to the legacies of Squire and Hackett.

Two prog-rock legends — bassist Chris Squire and guitarist Steve Hackett — have gotten together to form a new band, Squackett. Their debut album, A Life Within A Day, will be released May 29 via Esoteric Antenna. Squackett also will release a limited-edition 7-inch single — "Sea of Smiles" backed with "Perfect Love Song" — April 21 as part of International Record Store Day. The pair got together about four years ago when Squire, the only Yes member to appear on every Yes album, was working on a solo album. Someone put him in touch with Hackett, who originally came to prominence as a member of Genesis and later worked with another member of Yes, Steve Howe, in GTR. Once the duo started working together, Squackett was born. “It was very much about a bunch of pals swapping notes and anecdotes,” Hackett says. “I would say if people are looking for uncountable time signatures, in the main that’s not what this album holds. I think the songs are more simple and direct.”“It has a flavor to it that is reminiscent of a few things from different artists,” Squire adds. “There is some clever prog-rock stuff in there, some jazzy bits but there are parts that have vocal harmonies like Crosby, Stills and Nash.”

A LIFE WITHIN A DAY

One minute to midnight in the dawn of humanity
A hundred million suns reflect in the deep blue sea
Compact the time, make the sign
Invoke the deity

An abandoned lighthouse darkened by the sea
In the heart of the forest stands the tallest tree
A thousand turning windmills
Endless energy

A life within a day

A life within a day

One minute to midnight
A life within a day
In the heart of the forest
A life within a day
A thousand threshing windmills
A life within a day
A life within a day
A life within a day
A life within a day

TALL SHIPS

Hunter's moon, lantern red
The vault of night glowing overhead
Sunken church bells ring under the sea
Tolling with the waves reaching you and me

On a night sea journey pulling us through
Eons of dreams, indigo blue
East of the wind, ahead for the day
Eat of the sun, drink of the spray

Tall ships, bright stars
Carry us near, carry us far
Tall ships, bright stars
Carry us near, carry us far

An opaque mist on a shining sea
A new dawn breaking, change of scenery
Sun-kissed islands scar the southern sphere
Our journey's end, a new day without fear

Tall ships, bright stars
Carry us near, carry us far
Tall ships, bright stars
Carry us near, carry us far

Tall ships, bright stars
Carry us near, carry us far
Tall ships, bright stars
Carry us near, carry us far

DIVIDED SELF

To be or not to be a white van man
A prince without a plan
Hamlet is a ham, a boy who loves his man
Don't mean to be a cynic, happy at the clinic anyhow
Thank you Mr. Freud, that's my life destroyed

Decided, united, derided
Divided self

The enemy within us knows heaven's full of sinners
You could be laughing as you weep
Crowded in this lonely room with actors
Landing on the moon
Don't mean to be a cynic
Happy at the clinic anyhow
Stay young and beautiful all the time

Decided, united, derided
Divided self

Decided, united, derided
Divided self

Decided, united, derided
Divided self

ALIENS

Aliens are only us, are only us from the future
Aliens are only us, are only us from the future

We are the class of 4007
Centuries away from home
Designated discoverers
Today we are back in time

Aliens are only us, are only us from the future
Aliens are only us, are only us from the future

Our time machines fly back and forth
That's the way our history's taught
How we accumulate our knowledge
Searching for the truth we forage

Aliens are only us, are only us from the future

The day will come we'll have passports to the sun
Fly around the universe
Knowing where we're going
And where it all began

Aliens are only us, are only us from the future

Traveling the road of space and time
Taking care not to leave any imprint behind
Making sure that we cover our tracks
Just a matter of fact or science fiction?

The day will come we'll have passports to the sun
We'll fly around the universe
Knowing where we all came from
And knowing what we've become

Aliens are only us, are only us from the future
Aliens are only us, are only us from the future
Aliens are only us, are only us from the future
Aliens are only us, are only us from the future

SEA OF SMILES

Knew that I'd always find you
Out in the sun, flying high
Fire and ice my gypsy child,
Over and over a sea of smiles

Passing streets where memory ends
in a silver of moon
through a forest of spires
Visions of earth, steam escapes from siren cities,
squealing tyres

Motel falling apart at the seams
Freak show drugstore, crumbling dreams
Fireballs flashing across the sky
Calling you, reaching me

Mountains move, troubles melt
When I think of all the things we felt
Love is still an open door
Like a wingless bird that cries no more

Knew that I'd always find you
Out in the sun, flying high
Fire and ice my gypsy child,
Over and over a sea of smiles

City life, the screaming trees
in a high resolution snapshot flash
Jurassic towers,
industrial strength washing lines recovering ash

A big freeze, a silent call
Snakes and ladders, the rise and fall
Changing fortunes, changing lanes
The road behind a broken chain

Another world pushing shadows back disappearing
through the cracks
Look ahead just keep moving on,
find a way across the Rubicon

Knew that I'd always find you
Out in the sun, flying high
Fire and ice my gypsy child,
Over and over a sea of smiles
Knew that I'd always find you
Out in the sun, flying high
Fire and ice my gypsy child,
Over and over a sea of smiles

Another world pushing shadows back disappearing
through the cracks
Look ahead just keep moving on,
find a way across the Rubicon

Knew that I'd always find you
Out in the sun, flying high
Fire and ice my gypsy child,
Over and over a sea of smiles

Knew that I'd always find you
Out in the sun, flying high
Fire and ice my gypsy child,
Over and over a sea of smiles

Knew that I'd always find you (repeat and fade)

THE SUMMER BACKWARDS

Caught by the slipstream past steamship island
Dangerously close to the skeleton coast
Held in a cloudburst, echoing the rain
Chiming percussion, a fleeting refrain

The Summer Backwards

Through the summer backwards,
buoyed on a soundwave
On a clear morning, a gold and silver day
Winding through the straits, longing for the shore
Drowning in words, searching for the lost score

The Summer Backwards
The Summer Backwards
The Summer Backwards

Gliding the shallows, maze of coral
Underwater frescos, worlds we swallowed
Taken from a dream, Venus and the mast
Sphinx beneath the sea, smile behind the mask

The Summer Backwards
The Summer Backwards
The Summer Backwards
The Summer Backwards

STORMCHASER

he whisper and wail of the wind
In the shadow of a twister rocks go wandering
Rivers in the sky, night begins
We move on wheels we have no wings

Stormchaser
Stormchaser

In the fading light close to the void
A panic attack, peace destroyed
Chasing the ghost of a smoking stack
In the centre of hell, better face the fact

Stormchaser
Stormchaser

The whisper and wail of the wind
In the shadow of a twister rocks go wandering
Rivers in the sky, night begins
We move on wheels we have no wings

Stormchaser
Stormchaser

Stormchaser
Stormchaser
Stormchaser
Stormchaser

CAN'T STOP THE RAIN

My mother always said to me, "Be honest to yourself
And always be the best that you can be
Never let life pass you by", was her philosophy
But I never saw the tears she cried

You can't stop the rain falling
Stop the rain falling
Can't stop the rain falling
Stop the rain falling down

There comes a time when every boy
grows up to be himself
Always searching for the perfect plan
To define his rite of passage, his responsibility
So he can do the best he can

But you can't stop the rain falling
Stop the rain falling
Can't stop the rain falling
Stop the rain falling down

If we knew what we know now, we'd probably change
How we've handled humanity
So we have to believe we have come to our senses
In truth and sincerity

You can't stop the rain falling
Stop the rain falling
Can't stop the rain falling
Stop the rain falling
You can't stop the rain falling down

PERFECT LOVE SONG

A jukebox wreathed in thin blue smoke
In the corner stands alone
Forgotten dreams forgotten smiles
While I still want to hear

The perfect love song
Perfect Love Song

Fanfares leading us astray
Songs of praise and songs of blame
One last drink and one last play
Turn until I hear

The perfect love song
Perfect Love Song

How quickly memories slip the net
It feels like we've already met
A soundtrack sighing on and on
From a film that has

The Perfect love song
Perfect Love Song
The Perfect love song
Perfect Love Song
The Perfect love song
Perfect Love Song
The Perfect love song
Perfect Love Song
