This CD Box Set offers you the opportunity to revisit the Hackett live experience in three different decades. It includes many favourites from the early days, rarely heard live since, and a 40 page booklet crammed with unseen photos and insights from Hackett himself on the times and the tunes.

CDs 1 & 2 showcase the 70s with a complete 2 hour performance at the legendary Hammersmith Odeon. CD3 is an outdoor concert recorded at Rome's Castel Sant' Angelo and Hackett describes this as "possibly the best this line up ever performed".

The 90s show sees Hackett back in London's Grand Theatre with a band featuring "the fearsome drumming of Hugo Degenhardt, the virtuoso bass of Doug Sinclair and the one-man orchestra of Julian Colbeck!" and is again a demonstration of six string power and virtuosity.

A 4 db CD-bõl álló gyûjtemény kitûnõ lehetõséget ad arra, hogy visszatekintsünk Steve Hackett koncertjeire az elmúlt három évtizedben. Nagyon sok régi számot is hallhatunk - a Genesis repertoárjából is, - valamint kizárólag koncerten játszott ritkaságokat. A 40 oldalas füzetben gazdag fotógyûjtemény, és Hackett kommentár található a régi idõkrõl és számokról. Az elsõ és második CD a hetvenes évekbõl ad ízelítõt, egy komplett 2 órás koncertet bemutatva, melyet a legendás londoni Hammersmith Odeonban rögzítettek.

A harmadik CD-n szabadtéri koncertet hallhatunk a Római Angyalvárból.

Many long-lived rock artists (Emerson, Lake & Palmer and King Crimson, to name two) are starting to see the value in releasing live archival material. It's a way to thwart the bootleggers, plus it pleases longtime fans. Hackett joins in with this box set release of three shows, one from the 1970s (Hammersmith Odeon, London, June 30,1979), one from the 1980s (Castel Sant'Angelo, Rome, Sept. 13,1981), and one from the 1990s (The Grand Theatre, London, June 8,1993). It's a viable collection, coming complete with a photo-laden booklet which includes an intro to each show written by Hackett (or, Stefanovitch Von Hackenschimdt, as he signs one), a complete tour itinerary covering his solo career to 2000, and track-by-track comments on each song from the 1993 disc (but, strangely, not for the other two shows). A couple of drawbacks to the discs are the only-average sound quality of the 1979 and 1981 shows, and the fact that generally the songs don't stray too far from their studio versions. These faults are minimal, though, when taken in the context of the whole box. The musicianship by all the band members is excellent throughout, and most of Hackett's best-known songs are represented along with a smattering of more obscure tracks and some previously unreleased songs. The 1979 show is the most adventurous, featuring a skilled acoustic set, a dynamic version of the Genesis classic "I Know What I Like," and his live staple of the time, "The Optigan." Performed on the rare instrument of the same name, an optical disc-playing organ, Hackett creates an otherworldly introduction to "A Tower Struck Down." The 1981 show concentrates on songs from his then-current album Cured, while the 1993 show is largely songs from Guitar Noir (plus an interesting and energetic medley of songs from throughout his career). Also on the 1993 disc is a previously unreleased progressive rock/jazz fusion instrumental, "Always Somewhere Else," which fits in well. This collection is a tasteful addition to Hackett's catalog, giving a full view of his live work and supplementing nicely his previous live release, Timelapse. A companion bonus disc, available separately, showcases two other shows from the '70s.

Never one to sit back and relax, Steve Hackett releases a new box set containing four live albums.

The first two CDs make up the first show, recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1979. The band was a one-off, but the show sounds great!

An excellent selection of songs, but this can be said of all three shows. There's a bit of a return to Genesis with an excellent version of "I Know What I Like" (which also includes the original Star Trek theme!) and, of course, "Horizons". The rest is all Hackett's material from his seventies albums with a lot of material from "Please Don't Touch", one of my personal favourite Hackett albums.

The third CD was recorded at Castel Sant' Angelo in Rome in 1981. Although close in time to the previous show, the material here is quite different, as is the band. Here Steve does all the lead vocals (which is quite nice).

Nick Magnus and Steve's brother John are also featured in this lineup, so there is a continuity, while it's not a stagnation.

The last CD was recorded in 1993 at the Grand Theatre in London. This one is a little closer to other live Hackett albums, but still not the same.

Overall, that's one of the best parts of this box set, you won't find endless repetitions of material from his other live albums.

All the shows feature the most recent releases of the time, yet they also span his solo career. As always, the guitar craft is perfect. The musicians accompanying him are flawless. The music is from one of the last of the true artists.

The sound is flawless on each CD, these are all board recordings. The audience has also been nicely recorded. The box set contains a 48-page booklet consisting mainly of an abundance of photos from all three shows and humorous comments from Steve. Also in it is a complete list of all the shows Steve has played since Genesis.

I'm not someone who is generally crazy about live albums, but this is something definetely apart from the average live album. A very good selection of pieces from a great career. Definitely a box set you'll want in your collection. The first one thousand copies are signed by Mr. Hackett himself. Makes a great Christmas gift!

One of rock’s most uncompromising and complex individuals, Steve Hackett has earned the reputation of being one of Britain’s finest composers and guitarists. Hackett began his career when he replaced guitarist Anthony Phillips in Genesis in 1970. Becoming an integral part of the ‘classic’ line up, he went on to record 8 albums with band throughout the 70’s. His complex and distinctive playing contributed heavily to their early success, developing an elegance and sophistication which have become his trademark over the years. In 1975, he recorded his first solo album entitled “Voyage Of The Acolyte”, which allowed him the freedom to experiment further with his song writing ideas and ultimately led to his departure from Genesis in 1978. Since then Steve has gone on to record a further 15 studio albums under his own name. Four of which have been collections of exquisite acoustic guitar work, including last year’s collaboration with his brother John entitled “Sketches Of Satie”, where the duo paid tribute to the French composer Erik Satie.

After various solo releases, Steve decided to try the setting of a band once again by forming GTR with Yes guitarist Steve Howe in 1986. The band released a self titled album the same year that went platinum in the US and spawned a top 10 single. Immense media coverage and a successful national tour followed before they disbanded to go their separate ways again. Steve’s response to the ‘stadium rock’ of GTR was to turn to the minimalism of the acoustic guitar once more and he released “Momentum” in 1988. He toured the album extensively, ending with a performance in the former Soviet Union in front of a massive 90,000 people. He continued to embark on further projects simultaneous to his solo output, including a benefit record to rally against the repatriation of the Vietnamese boat people in 1989 plus collaborations with the London Chamber Orchestra and the celebrated London Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1997, Hackett assembled a diverse and highly respected group of musicians to take an affectionate nod to his past by reinterpreting some classic Genesis material with the release of “Genesis Revisited”. Encouraged by the album’s reception, Steve took to the stage in Japan accompanied by John Wetton, Ian MacDonald, Chester Thompson & Julian Colbeck to perform a selection of their collective back catalogues. A double album and video of these unique performances was captured and released in 1998 as “The Tokyo Tapes” much to the delight of fans around the world.

Now fans get the opportunity to take a look back over almost three decades of artistic creativity with the release of a special 4 CD box set entitled “Live Archive 70/80/90’s”. With this release, Hackett takes listeners right back to the beginnings of his solo career and illustrates how lively his music has remained through years. Throughout his career, Hackett has never flinched from exploring the limits of the term ‘progressive’, taking the guitar to new heights, which can be heard over the years on this unique archive of recordings. CD’s 1 & 2 present a complete two hour performance from June 1979 at London’s Hammersmith Odeon. Taking in over 20 songs, the concert focuses on Steve’s first three solo albums plus a smattering of Genesis from the successful “Spectral Mornings” tour.

CD 3 looks at an open air show performed at the magnificent Castel Sant‘ Angelo in the heart of Rome from September 1981. Hackett describes the line up at the time of Nick Magnus (keyboards), John Hackett (flute, guitar), Chas Cronk (bass) and Ian Mosely (drums) as one of the best with which he has ever played with on stage. The set features a broad choice of tracks from the “Cured” tour against the backdrop of a romantic Italian summer.

Saving the best until last, CD 4 is a powerhouse performance from June 1993 at The Grand Theatre in London. A note perfect show from the “Guitar Noir” tour that covers a generous portion of Steve’s back catalogue, all delivered with a fearsome energy by a band at the top of their game.

“Live Archive 70/80/90’s” takes a look back on three successful decades of one of the most versatile guitarists in contemporary rock. Like many of his former colleagues who have succeeded artistically on their own terms, Steve Hackett has remained true to his muse, someone who cannot easily be packaged and indeed has an aversion to the trappings of rock stardom. Yet, there can be no denying that Hackett is a legend whose reputation rests on sheer talent, sensitive playing and an infallible ability to challenge and intrigue his audience.

An early post Saturday morning would not normally stir me having not slept Friday night; Saturday morning is my chance to catch up with the land of nod, if not actually in it. However, the clatter of the letterbox and corresponding (pun not intended) thud of an item of post landing on the carpet could only mean one thing; The Hackett Archives had arrived. Wrestling with my (semi) conscience, I succumbed to hobbling downstairs to check out the parcel, only meaning to quickly scan the goods before returning to bed. Nice CD size cardboard box (see picture) containing four CDs in separate single sleeves, like mini albums. CDs 1 & 2 are live recordings from the gig at the Hammersmith Odeon, London in June 1979. CD 3 is from Castel Sant’ Angelo, Rome in September 1981 and CD 4 at The Grand Theatre, London in June 1993. A fifth bonus CD (available separately from the box set, though it will fit in the box – just) is taken from Newcastle City Hall in October 1979 with additional tracks from the Hammersmith Odeon in October 1978. Having seen Steve Hackett on every tour from inception as a solo entity up to 1983 (or was it 1988) when he performed an acoustic set with John Hackett and Nick Magnus (or was it Julian Colbeck?) at Warwick Arts Centre. I had to put CD 1 at least in the player. Then CD 2…. Ah well, who needs sleep?

Wow. No hissing, no scratching, not even from me! What a trip back memory-wise; attending the gigs albeit at Birmingham Odeon with my best chum and my fiancée, the old Saab I had at the time. The memories and my best chum are still here, my fiancée/wife and Saab are long gone, both being unreliable to say the least. The booklet that accompanies the set contains archive photo’s, a fan’s memories, complete list of concerts performed, not to mention humorous notes by Mr Hackett who thankfully decided to quit, and I quote, “Matron and her charges” and go it alone. Steve certainly continued in the spirit of Genesis of old much to the relief of the fans. Funny how he seems to be the only one who stands up and admits to liking the music of the prog years of Genesis. And he is still happy to perform some Genesis era stuff including Firth of Fifth, In That Quiet Earth, a cracking I Know What I Like and a medley incorporating Los Endos, all included on these discs.

The obviously live sound is perfectly captured and reproduced and puts me firmly back in row M seat 26, a third of the way back and dead centre stage in the theatre (always had the same seat). Even the tingle down the spine factor is there after all these years. All the favourites are there from Voyage of the Acolyte, Please Don’t Touch, Spectral Mornings, Defector and Cured in the early years to Guitar Noir in the 90’s. John Hackett’s flute is clear and at the forefront throughout as is the percussion, just as they were in the live environment. Vocals were, as I recall, a tad weak at the start of the set in the early concerts but became more assertive at the halfway stage as confidence grew. Hackett’s guitar playing needs no comment – his style is often used as a comparison to describe newer musicians styles and influences.

I had forgotten how good Steve’s compositions are being selective these days in what tracks I play via CD player or turntable. Listen again to Every Day, I haven’t for ages but the instrumental last two thirds of the track is superb, especially this live version. For some reason I had got it into my mind that it was a boring, lively yet mundane song. How wrong I was. Same for The Red Flower of Tai Chi – absolutely beautiful. Then there’s the wonderful Shadow Of The Hierophant where for the early shows Dick Cadbury (I think) loosened his bass guitar, hiked up his undergarments and adopted a falsetto in order to do a Sally Oldfield vocal. How we laughed at the start and applauded and cheered at the end.

These concerts were special. The audience maintained a silence unbecoming for a rock concert during each song, breaking into deafening cheers and applause at the end of each piece. In fact, Steve would imply that silence was necessary if he was to play, and for that I take my virtual hat of to him; I, like most others want to hear the music, not some clown talking throughout the set or blocking my view. Invariably, other fans would interrupt our conversation in the bar pre gig to discuss what the opening song would be. It took me until the Defector tour to get it correct (the answer was The Steppes – I’d sussed Steve’s strategy by this time).

I know that some people consider much of the tunes to be dated due to the instruments used on the studio albums. It naturally has a 70’s sound about it, which incidentally I happen to love. The surprise is that the live versions sound remarkably modern in the manner in which they were performed.

This box set is NOT ONLY for completists. I would go as far as saying that it brought a new lease of life to music I have always loved, but temporarily forgotten and it sounds as fresh to these ears today as it did 20 years ago. Good for reliving memories and acceptable as a compilation if you are Hackett less in your home. Reckon this set will occupy five of the six slots in the cars CD auto-changer for the foreseeable future. Love the label on the rear of the box that advises ‘File under Progressive Rock’. You betcha!

Steve Hackett - often imitated by the current crop of prog rock guitarists, but never bettered. Over the years Steve's output has far outstripped the ex-Genesis tag, you could never compare - for example, 'Voyage Of The Acolyte' with his most recent studio album, 'Darktown'. Ditto with his acoustic work which covers the classical leanings of his recent 'Sketches Of Satie' to his more mainstream 'Bay Of Kings'.

Recent live offerings via his own Camino label include the acoustic 'There Are Many Sides To The Night' or the full-blown rock out of 'The Tokyo Tapes'. What most fans want is a more rounded view of Steve's live output and this boxed set goes some way to addressing this.

Split into three parts representing three decades it picks out three excellent performances. The 70s covers two CDs and is a complete concert of Steve and his band from the 'Spectral Mornings' tour of 1979. Recorded at Hammersmith Odeon in June of that year the tracks are drawn from the three albums available at the time. It might have been easy to play the Genesis card but perhaps wisely Steve sticks with his own material ,other than snatches of 'Blood On the Rooftops','Horizons' and 'I Know What I Like'.

This set proves the strength of'Spectral Mornings', especially the title track, 'Everyday' and 'Clocks'. My favourite, though, is 'Ace Of Wands' from his debut solo album 'Voyage Of The Acolyte'.

Moving into the eighties, and the featured concert is September 1981's 'Castel Saint Angelo' in Rome. This features a slightly different band line-up and focuses on then current album 'Cured'. This is represented by five tracks including the magnificent opener 'Air Conditioned Nightmare'. Of the other tracks, 'Hope I Don't Wake' and 'Funny Feeling' transfer well from studio to stage although 'The Steppes' (from 1980's 'Defector') is incredible.

The 1990's features a gig in June 1993 in London. The emphasis is on then current album 'Guitar Noir' but we also get songs from Steve Hackett's solo career and GTR the band he formed with Steve Howe. Genesis fans will be pleased at the inclusion of a stirring and breakneck version of 'In That Quiet Earth'.

In summing up, this boxed set will be welcomed by longtime Hackett fans but should be sought out by current prog-rock fans who may detect some clear clues for their own contemporary favourites. Complete with informative booklet, with notes from Steve Hackett himself, this collection sets high standards for archive releases.
