Genesis Files chronicles a short span of Hackett's solo career with excerpts from selected projects from the mid-80s through the late '90s, culling material from the albums Genesis Revisited, The Tokyo Tapes, DarkTown, Feedback '86 and Bay of Kings. For the collector, the set does offer one previously rare track, the studio version of "Riding The Colossus," which was only available on the Japanese edition of Genesis Revisited.

While the double disc set makes a nice introduction to some of Hackett's more recent projects, the collection focuses heavily on his own versions of Genesis era material (as the title might suggest). Eleven of the twenty tunes featured on Genesis Files are material written while Hackett was in the band. Personally, I would have preferred to see a collection of material that focused on a more diverse mix of Steve's more recent solo projects on his own label, Camino, spanning his work with rock, classical and blues. Such a mix would have been a much better representation of Hackett's artistry as a songwriter and guitarist. Sadly, the pesky world of royalties limits this compilation from being a comprehensive full career retrospective, since Hackett's early material is on Virgin Records. Perhaps more disappointing; however, is Snapper Music's seemingly blatant attempts to cash in on Steve's stint with Genesis, leaving the casual listener with the impression that Hackett hasn't written much in the way of good material since his Genesis days.



Die neue Steve Hackett-Compilation-Doppel-CD Genesis Files

Seit Februar 2002 ist die mittlereweile zweite Steve Hackett-Compilation-CD auf dem Markt. Das erste Album dieser Art, The Unauthorised Biography, 1992 bei Virgin erschienen, wartete mit einem Querschnitt durch die "early solo years" und zwei bis dahin unveröffentlichten Stücken auf - war also sowohl für Hackett-Einsteiger wie auch für langjährige Fans durchaus anschaffenswert. Das kann man von dem neuen Album nur bedingt behaupten, denn die Auswahl der Stücke auf Genesis Files beschränkt sich auf wenige Alben. Genauer gesagt, ist die ganze Sache sogar nur eine Wiederveröffentlichung von Genesis Revisited, angereichert fast nur mit Stücken zweier Alben der jüngeren Hackett-Vergangenheit, nämlich Darktown und The Tokyo Tapes. Das Ganze gehört zum Konzept der Serie Recall 2CD von Snapper Music, und ob die Welt das wirklich braucht, sei dahin gestellt. Für Hacketts eigenes Label Camino Records ist das Album zumindest eine gute Werbung, denn die CD ist für nur 9.99£ im Handel und bringt deshalb vielleicht doch manchen Käufer dieses Albums dazu, sich für Steves andere Solowerke zu interessieren.

Eröffnet wird das Album mit zwei Genesis-Klassikern von Revisited: Firth Of Fifth und Watcher Of The Skies, beides starke Interpretationen mit John Wetton als Sänger. Das nächste Stück, Riding The Colossus, stammt zwar auch von Genesis Revisited, war aber nur auf der japanischen Edition enthalten. Mit Genesis ansich hat der Song aber im Widerspruch zum Titel dieser Compilation genauso wenig zu tun wie die beiden folgenden, Rise Again von Darktown und Valley Of The Kings, wiederum von ... Revisited. Das kann man zumindest teilweise von Time Lapse At Milton Keynes behaupten, denn Steve wurde beim Schreiben des Stücks vom legendären Genesis-Reunion-Konzert 1982 in Milton Keynes inspiriert. Es stammt von der aktuellen Ausgabe der Bay Of Kings-CD. Musikalisch unterbricht diese ruhige Solo-Akustikgitarren-Nummer aber etwas den Fluß des Albums. Es schließt sich eine Dreier-Pack von Genesis Revisited-Titeln an: Your Own Special Way, The Fountain Of Salmacis und For Absent Friends - alle drei Versionen, die sich doch ziemlich deutlich von den Genesis-Originalen aus den '70ern unterscheiden. Mit Twice Around The Sun von Darktown beschließt ein imposantes Instrumentalwerk - ohne Genesis-Bezug - die erste CD.

CD 2 beginnt mit der einzigen bis dahin noch unveröffentlichte Aufnahme auf diesem Album, einer neuen Version vom Hackett-Akustik-Klassiker Horizons, die natürlich wiederum grandios ist. Natürlich muß der treue Hackett-Fan schon allein deshalb diese CD haben, auch wenn es die inzwischen vierte Interpretation des Stücks ist, die auf einer Hackett-Soloscheibe enthalten ist. Das nächste Stück paßt musikalisch und thematisch weder gut zum Titel davor noch zu diesem Album: Prizefighters von Feedback 86 mit Bonnie Tyler und Chris Thompson an den Mikros. Den Rest der zweiten CD ist sowohl ein Mix aus Live-Stücken von The Tokyo Tapes und Studio-Tracks Genesis Revisited wie aus Genesis- und Hackett-Klassiker/Kuriositäten. Camino Royale gehört dabei zu Steves Klassikern, I Know What I Like hingegen zu denen seiner ehemaligen Band. Déjà Vu und Waiting Room Only, beide von ... Revisited, fallen eher unter "Kuriositäten". Déjà Vu weil es aus Steves Erinnerung an einen nie fertig gestellten Genesis-/Peter Gabriel-Song von 1973 entstand, Waiting Room Only, weil diese Version von The Waiting Room vom The Lamb ... -Album so herrlich schräg ist und kaum noch etwas mit dem Original zu tun hat. Vier Klassiker beenden das Album dann stilvoll: Dance On A Volcano in der ... Revisited-Version sowie The Steppes, In That Quiet Earth und Los Endos von The Tokyo Tapes.
