Recorded live during the Genesis 1981 tour except [3]-[5] The Farm, Surrey '81 and [6]-[7] Polar Studios Stockholm 1979.

Tracks [3]-[5] are B-sides from the Abacab sessions, while + tracks are B-sides from the Duke sessions. Tracks 13-15 were also released in the UK on the 3x3 EP (qv) in 1982.

The USA remastered 3 Sides Live has the UK track list with the fourth side live, not with the 3x3 EP and two flip sides. The five non-album tracks were replaced because they would be remastered on the then-forthcoming boxed set. The live material from the UK version was substituted instead. The title, of course, has not been changed from "Three Sides Live" even though 1) there are four "sides" live now, and 2) the "sides" don't even exist anymore since the LP version no longer exists.



On its third live album (another double), Genesis brought listeners up-to-date on the trio version of the group and its recent hit singles from Abacab and Duke. The U.K. version of the album (Charisma GE 2002), despite the title, was an all-live album, while the American version (Atlantic SD 2-2000), had three live sides and a fourth side of studio material, including the Top 40 hit "Paperlate" (which appeared in the U.K. as part of an EP called 3 By 3).

Mit diesem Album von 1983 etablierten sich die Herren Tony Banks, Phil Collins und Mike Rutherford in ihrer komfortablen Nische als Weltklasse-Hitschreiberlinge. Dennoch blieben sie voller Ehrgeiz und ständig auf der Suche nach kreativem Neuland. So standen also neben populären und relativ geradlinigen Songs wie "That´s All", "Illegal Alien", "Taking It All Too Hard", "Just A Job To Do" und dem subtil bedrohlichen "Mama", die etwas komplexer strukturierten Songs wie "Second Home By The Sea" und "It´s Gonna Get Better". Eingängig und eigenständig zugleich bleibt Genesis eines der beständigsten Alben der 80er Jahre.
