Sieg über die Sonne sind Pink Elln und Dandy Jack, zwei umtriebige Soundtechniker zwischen Frankfurt, Berlin und dem Rest der Welt. Beide haben einen langen Weg hinter sich, machen schon seit den achtziger Jahren herum, ihre Wurzeln stecken tief im Industrial. Die vorliegende Platte nun, deren überaus kreativen Titel ich nicht noch einmal wiederholen möchte, ist, gelinde gesagt, ein Schuss in den Ofen. Da wurde vielleicht aufwendiges Sounddesign betrieben. Nur wofür? Um einen Sound zu erreichen, der bestenfalls nach Café del Mar meets Full-Moon-Party klingt. Im übelsten Fall ist es Soft-Elektro für die Proll-Kneipe um die Ecke oder Goa-Trance für Germanistik-Studenten. Mega Trance eben. Und wenn es spannend werden soll, erzählt eine gesampelte Stimme irgendwas, was international klingen möchte. Als hätten Elln und Jack gesagt: “Hey, machen wir doch mal so minimalen Dub-House”. Um ihn dann mit trancigen Flächensounds wie von einer Keyboards-Demo-CD zu überfrachten. Diese Herren müssten es doch eigentlich besser können.

Part of the Frankfurt ambient and experimental axis centered around Pete Namlook and Atom Heart, Pink Elln and Santiago-born Dandy Jack have collaborated with any number of other German and Chilean artists. Here, they return to the Sieg Uber Die Sonne ("Conquering the Sun") project that generated 1996's similarly mathematics-themed "1 8" long-player. A collision of pre-techno synth-pop and post-techno tinkering, "(-)x(-)=(+)" has something for everyone: house heads, electro melancholics and even bedroom studio boffins. Intricate rhythms and bleepy synths underpin mordant melodies and wacky/sinister vocals for a listening experience equally akin to Plaid, Yello, Felix Da Housecat and the Kooky Scientist. Although a few tracks verge on out-and-out ambience, most retain enough pop-music use-value to endear them to folks who would normally run screaming from anything labeled "experimental German techno." The off-kilter house of "I'm Not a Sound" and the seismic electro of "Beat Box," for instance, would make perfectly workable club hits in the right DJ's hands. The thread that ties together all of the producers' disparate influences is careful attention to pinpoint sonic details, from the precise articulation of a keyboard glissando to the careful syncopation of a sculptured beat. Smooth and glitchy, humorous and bittersweet, "(-)x(-)=(+)" is the most surprising pleasure I've discovered all year.

Pink Elln's regular collaboration with Atom Heart under the most diverse rhythmical accompaniment and climatic conditions speaks the clear language of intentional legend building their live album, Elektonika/Electronique (Ongaku/Rising High) from Helsinki/Montreux, for example, has been repeatedly cited by prominent Detroit DJs as being the igniting spark for their own new productions. An extensive European tour with Lassique Bendthaus, studio sessions and performances with the Latinotronic super group, Gonzalo Martinez (multiColor) as well as mixing for and co-producing an album with Jardin Secreto (Santiago de Chile) have reunited the two with their colleague, Dandy Jack in an unattainably tasteful ambiance. Pink Elln put the last urgent signals prior to the enormous solar prominences into the present with releases of unearthly beauty on Lo-Fi Stereo. Since 1993 he has accompanied the exclusive, electronic Dreamplant crew, Stardax, as sound designer at international festivals and bestows with intermedial world with regular CD-ROM releases on their Saas.Fee / Kompakt label (ex-Arosa 2000). Dandy Jack is one of the most talented music mechanics between Berlin and Santiago de Chile. Following Subrosa Elektropunk and the reclamation of the intercontinental Zone Industriel in the 80s, Dandy Jack together with his World Citizen colleagues, Atom Heart, designed Particle-House structures under the project name GON. He was also a sound design consultant for Marcel Antunez's (La Fura Dels Baus) digital-mechanical performance, 'Epizoo', which premiered in Florence. Xjacks with Victor Sol (releases on Fax and April), Amp with Pete Namlook and both of his solo albums on Rather Interesting speak a cultivated musical language, the single syllables of which already tell exciting stories. Founding Gonzalo Martinez (multiColor) together with the Chilean superstar Jorge Gonzalez was, however, the greatest 'act of suspense', transcribing traditional Cumbia into an electronic emphasis. Ricardo Villalobos and Dandy Jack, currently comprise the Techno project Ric Y Martin (Perlon, Ladomat mix for Luomo on Force Tracks). By the way, Dandy Jack is also known for occasionally loaning his face to Señor Coconut.

Ricardo Villalobos und Dandy Jack, los hombres de los dos veranos, bilden zur Zeit den Technokörper von Ric y Martin (Perlon, Ladomat, rmx für Luomo auf Forcetracks). Dieser kanalisiert die Wucht chilenischer Erdbeben auf der nach oben offenen Clubskala in aerodynamische, latinfizierte Oszillationen internationaler Tanzbretter. Ein angeblicher Interpret ähnlichen Namens, der sich in den Charts tummelt, scheint lediglich als Gesicht zu existieren. Apropos: Dandy Jack ist auchbekannt dafür, dass er Señor Coconut (multiColor) manchmal sein Gesicht leiht…
