Wenn es einen Preis für die unscheinbarste Pop-Band der Welt gäbe - Mike & The Mechanics würden ihn jedes Jahr bekommen. Sogar die Rock-Lexika dieser Welt schweigen und das sonst allwissende Internet hält keine "official website" parat. Dabei sind der Genesis-Gitarreo Mike Rutherford und die beiden Sänger Paul Carrack und Paul Young (nein, nicht der mit "Wherever I Lay My Hat") jetzt schon 15 Jahre als Mike & The Mechanics unterwegs. Und erfolgreich war das Pop-Trio ja auch. Hits wie "All I Need Is A Miracle"('85), "Silent Running"('85), "The Living Years",('89) oder zuletzt "Over my shoulder"('95), waren auf der ganzen Welt in den Charts. Daß Mike Rutherford zum Ende des Jahrtausends nochmal mit ganz neuen Tönen auffährt, braucht man nicht zu erwarten. Aber das will er ja auch gar nicht. O-Ton Rutherford: "Wir machen R&B-beeinflußten Pop und entweder man mag das oder nicht" - keine Angst, Mike, man mag es. "Now That You've Been Gone" reiht sich mit seinem Ohrwurm-Refrain nahtlos in die oben genannten Hits ein, und eigentlich jeder der 13 Songs auf der 99'er Mike & The Mechanics könnte als Single ausgekoppelt werden. Auch wenn der Sound streckenweise etwas zu sehr poliert wurde: Ihre Trumpf-Karte, ein schier unerschöpfliches Reservoir an Melodien, spielen die Mechaniker bei allen Titeln schamlos aus. Mike & The Mechanics '99: Altbewährtes, das aber gut.
