This CD is dedicated to Tony Banks.

The recordings took place during 1999-2000 in the Concert Hall at the Norwegian Academy of Music, Oslo, Norway.

Seven Genesis' tracks arranged for piano by two Norwegian musicians, reminiscent of Stravinsky's work for two pianos. The cover artwork is by Paul Whitehead who did several early sleeves for Genesis albums. Camino. 2001.

Genesis guitarist STEVE HACKETT comments "Genesis For Two Grand Pianos is an ingenious and thoughtful project delivered in a virtuosic style reminiscent in places of Stravinsky's work for two pianos. It seems as if classical hands have firmly grasped the torch originally lit by a rock band who often looked to music's roots in the first place. Genesis' largely keyboard based tunes are cleverly reduced to their constituent parts most effectively to my mind and in some cases have only gained in this unique interpretation."

This does exactly what it says on the tin! Two Norwegian piano geniuses (Yngve Guddal and Roger T. Matte since you ask) have arranged some of those fiendishly complicated Genesis tunes for two pianos and recorded the result on two Steinways. We thought it was tremendous.

Camino Records

With its introduction by Steve Hackett and adherence to the band's prog roots, Genesis for Two Grand Pianos should be seen as something more than the opportunistic string quartet tributes to pop music that seem to spawn with each release date. Performed by Norwegians Yngve Guddal and Roger T. Matte on two Steinways, the album runs through seven Genesis cuts culled from its literate 1970s albums. ("Duke's Travels" is the exception, but it was also the progressive exception amidst the more straightforward material of 1980s Duke). "Fountain of Salmacis," from 1971's Nursery Cryme, kicks things off here. In this form, it's an urgent mixture of bright prog chords and dark bottom end. Together with the stirring "Can-Utility and the Coastliners," it is a standout on the record. Genesis for Two Grand Pianos is recommended for the band's legion of longtime listeners, but general aficionados of piano might also find it interesting in a technical sense.
