GTR is the supergroup that features Steve Howe (Asia & Yes), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Max Bacon, Phil Spalding and Jonathan Mover. This CD was produced by Geoffrey Downes (Buggles, Asia). GTR went gold in 1986 and featured the hit When The Heart Rules The Mind. Remastered. 10 tracks.

GTR (short for "Guitar") were a supergroup formed in 1985 by Steve Howe (occasional member of Yes and Asia) and Steve Hackett. In interviews the two Steves stated the aim of the project was to take the guitar into the 21st century. Unfortunately money, egos, record companies and dubious management turned the project into a vehicle for radio-friendly rock instead of something more "progressive", as might have been expected from former members of Yes & Genesis. After a platinum album and top-ten single in the US, and a headlining world tour, Hackett walked away from rainbows. Steve Howe wanted to continue the project without Hackett and recorded demos for another album with guitarist Robert Berry, but this was never released.

Progressive rock super groups usually don't last very long. In fact, it seems many end up as "one-off" projects regardless of how long the members intended to continue. GTR's formation in 1986 was apparently intended to pick up where the temporarily defunct Asia left off — prog-rock virtuosity blended with pop's melodic sensibilities. GTR was short for "guitar," of course, and two prominent prog-rock guitarists spearheaded the project: Yes and Asia veteran Steve Howe and Genesis veteran Steve Hackett. They both played synthesizer too, accounting for that slick mid-'80s feel. Vocalist Max Bacon, bass guitarist Phil Spalding, and drummer Jonathan Mover completed the lineup. Keyboardist Geoffrey Downes, a Buggles and Asia alumnus, produced GTR. The album went gold and just missed the Top Ten. GTR is deeply flawed, but there are some good moments to counteract the dismal ones. The excellent Top 15 single "When the Heart Rules the Mind" is by far the best; Howe and Hackett provide fleeting electric guitar runs and acoustic guitar flourishes to enhance the infectious chorus. "The Hunter," penned by Downes, was a minor hit; its lyrical mumbo jumbo is defused a bit by Bacon's sweet, high-pitched vocals, particularly in the plodding chorus. "Sketches in the Sun" is an interesting, carefully assembled instrumental solo showcasing Howe. "Toe the Line" is a mess lyrically, so it's best to focus on the complementary acoustic guitar lines. "Hackett to Bits" is Hackett's spotlight instrumental track, and he opts for hard-rock guitar licks while the rest of the band provides an unpredictable, disjointed rhythm backing. The complex arrangement of "Imagining" vividly illustrates GTR's prog-rock past. GTR may appeal to limited tastes — fans of Asia and latter-day Genesis — but as a whole it's a disappointment.

WHEN THE HEART RULES THE MIND

Mother protect me, protect me from myself
Lately I can't tell, who really are my friends
Burning the candle, the candle at both ends
Through crowds, across floors
Each night I just pretend

When the heart rules the mind
One look and love is blind
When you want the dream to last
Take a chance forget the past

Watching the actor, that takes the stage by storm
Stealing the limelight, while we're in the wings
Sometimes the hero, must play the underdog
But I don't feel the same
I must have everything

When the heart rules the mind
One look and love is blind
When you want the dream to last
Take a chance forget the past

Seasons will change
You must move on
Follow your dream

When the heart rules the mind
One look and love is blind
When you want the dream to last
Take a chance forget the past...

Seasons will change
You must move on
Follow your dream

THE HUNTER

It don't come easy that's understood
Faint hearted loser that's no good,
Just take a lesson from the great Mohammed
He said.....He said.....

Pick up a rifle, you must be strong
To take a title can be so long,
If you believe, you can't go wrong,
I said.....I said....., listen

He's a fighter, he's my friend
Always winning in the end,
He's no angel, he's no fool,
Never plays it by the rule,
Take the glory, steal the prize,
Only the hunter, only the hunter

You took your chances, you hurt your pride
A sense of failure is hard to hide
You crossed the limit, you broke the code
Back on the road
Remember?.....

He's a rival, he's my friend
Always winning in the end,
He's a tiger, he's a swan,
He's the one I'm counting on,
To take the glory, steal the prize,
Only the hunter, only the hunter
Survives

I'm on the outside, I'm looking in,
Through the lenses then into film,
I've got the target set in my sights,
I see a vision of truth,
Look out.....

We're gonna fight until we drop,
We're gonna get back to the top,
We're gonna be the first in line,
Winners till the end of time
Only the hunter, only the hunter,
Survives.

HERE I WAIT

I remember everything
Just the way it was
You and I were almost one
We shared the some road

Talk of love will last forever
Through the rack and ruin
All the pain and pleasure
That lead to our undoing

Here I wait
Just to be forgiven
Here I wait
Until we stand together
Here I wait
Trying to cross the borderline
Here I wait
Until we stand together

Trying for a new solution
Tracing back my roots
There I found a different sign
That took me by surprise

I had always thought of you
As someone I could trust
It came as such a shock to learn
You play life as you must

Here I wait
I can't wait forever
Here I wait
Where love is sure to find me
Here I wait
Trying to cross the borderline
Here I wait
Until we stand together

I wait for you...

Here I wait...

SKETCHES IN THE SUN

A Solo Guitar Performance
(Instrumental)

JEKYLL AND HYDE

I hear thunder from the mountain
Trying to split my personality
I see burning on the hillside
Darkness till the break of day

The wind that blows
A Dog that bites
Recurring dreams
Another night

Underground through the marshes
Got to keep the hounds at bay, I know
Can't move, my feet are frozen
There's a pounding in my head

The horn that sounds
I'm through the door
My body's trembling
Turn on the light

Is the mirror lying?
I must decide
If I'm Doctor Jekyll
Or Mr. Hyde

Is the mirror lying?
I must decide
If I'm Doctor Jekyll
Or Mr. Hyde

YOU CAN STILL GET THROUGH

Stop, look and listen
Take it all in
Things you've been doing
Have gotten under your skin - yeah

Down on your knees
The phone calls for you
Too many mornings
You're not pulling through

Don't throw away your time

Someday you're gonna fly,
To the edge of the world
You just have to believe
You can still get through

Beg, steal, or borrow
Your time's running out
A fight that's worth fighting
When your future's in doubt

Don't throw away your time

Someday you're gonna fly
To the edge of the world
You just have to believe
You can still get through

I believe,
You can still get through

Still get through...

REACH OUT (NEVER SAY NO)

The question I'm asking
Is what are you planning
The answer that's coming
Better ring true
You say that you need me
Don't know what to believe

Loving you
Makes nothing easy
After all
The things we want are not the same

Reach out
Never say no...

Don't need X-ray vision
I see right through you
Your love makes trouble
The seeds of disruption
You're always abusing
The freedom you're given

Loving you
Makes nothing easy
After all
The things we want are not same

Reach out
Never say no...

TOE THE LINE

Sometimes you want to kick yourself
For letting things get this far
You get no thanks at all
It's just a double-edged sword

We try to keep ourselves detached
It's clear who holds the key
Drifting through the age of reason
Now your washed up on the shore

Toe the line
It'll only hurt
What are you trying to hide
When you go swimming against the tide

You'd better toe the line
It's only going to hurt
What a waste of time
Trying to change their world
So toe the line

It seems like everything you went for
Disappeared like purple haze
Can we ever hope for justice
While bitter men hold nothing close to them

It was fixed before you were here
You'd better toe the line
(It's only going to hurt)
What a waste of time
Trying to change their world
So toe the line
It's an English custom

HACKETT TO BITS

A reinterpretation of Steve Hackett's "Please Don't Touch"
from the album of the same name.
(Instrumental)

IMAGINING

I've been out of touch again
From all that's happening around you
I've become a different man
Can't seem to stand still

It was all a big mistake
Once we were partners in crime
We went off our separate ways
Never performing in time, in time

Imagining
All the lies you were told
Imagining
They were true you withold
Imagining
Is it real, or a myth?
Imagining
In the world that we live

You were still dependent on
Lovers on your terms, your terms
Could you entertain again
Would you be losing your freedom, freedom

Imagining
All the lies you were told
Imagining
They were true you withold
Imagining
Is it real, or a myth?
Imagining
In the world that we live
