Following the bleak But Seriously and Both Sides, Phil Collins delivered the considerably lighter Dance into the Light, his first upbeat pop album since 1985's No Jacket Required. Not only was it a return to the musical style that brought him to the top of the charts during the '80s, but Dance into the Light was the first record Collins released since leaving Genesis, which made it all the more crucial to his career. For the most part, the album treads familiar territory — R&B-influenced dance-pop, sensitive ballads and brooding mid-tempo ruminations — but there are several occasions where he stretches out, incorporating worldbeat influences into his style. And that's where the problem with Dance into the Light lies — ten years after the breakthroughs of Paul Simon's Graceland, Collins' idea of adventurous music remains worldbeat, which has already passed out of public consciousness. Furthermore, his polyrhythms are surprisingly stiff for a drummer, which sinks all of the more experimental tracks. The remainder of the album is pleasant, but offers no distinctive melodies, which means that the albums sounds fine while it's on, but leaves nothing behind once it's finished.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All-Music Guide

Three years after the almost morose Both Sides, Phil Collins has gone from claustrophobic gloom to an album titled Dance Into The Light. From the outset, Collins' new outlook on life is manifest in the cheering chord patterns, giddy rhythms, shiny horn parts, and African street guitars. Collins takes some chances and tries new sounds, but without venturing so far as to risk commercial backlash, packaging exotic sounds as comforting environments, rather than edgy cultural crossovers.

On the most personal songs, Collins looks ahead from the darkness behind him to a happy-footed future. It's not that the album is unrelentingly upbeat; quite the contrary, as he merely puts a positive spin on difficult times. And if the sentiment and the sounds are occasionally lightweight, these aren't exactly criticisms: Collins' fans like him this way, upbeat and eclectic, willing to talk about love and pain in frank and open-faced terms.

But Peter Gabriel might take some exception to Collins' way-late adoption of world music styles, and might even be able to win a plagiarism suit on "Lorenzo," in which even Collins's voice sounds like Gabriel's, never mind the pan-African drums and lyrics. In fact, the album's best moments look back to the things he's trying to escape, including his second marriage and time with Genesis. The punchy horns of the opening "Dance Into The Light" recall the Abacab album, and the rhythm recalls "Sussudio." Another world music pop star might also make it a class action suit: sure, the Afro-pop guitars demand that the songs will sound alike, but "Wear My Hat" is way too close to Paul Simon's "I Know What I Know."

There are a couple duds -- Collins has his style down so pat that it's almost schtick, even self-parody (hey, it happened to Hemingway, it can happen to Phil Collins.) Right from the title, "Love Police" is a throwaway, and "No Matter Who" has vocal-keyboard unison lines, a redundancy that only works on the very sappiest megahits. On the other hand, "It's In Your Eyes" (Gabriel again?!?!) is a tuneful Beatle-y song complete with tambourines and harmony melismata, and "Oughta Know By Now" is an edgy pop-soul ballad. And Collins turns Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A'Changing" into a chiming, U2-with-bagpipes anthem with surprising success; his empowered vocal adds a personal touch to a 35-year-old song that has taken on a mutability and universality few other songs could withstand.

Despite the criticisms, Collins fans will find much to love here, and once you get over the sound-alike tag, the songs are enjoyable. Other songs offer more rooted pleasures. Above the light, aerated funky drumming on "Just Another Story," Collins sheds his inclination toward melodrama to create one of his most understated, and best, tracks in some time. The song, a series of character sketches about people who follow violent urges or peer pressure to tragic ends, includes the lyric "just another story about going too far." Here, Collins pushes just a little further than he typically might with great success. Would that he went too far just a couple more times on this album.

"Oughta Know By Now" hebt sogar als eine Art Genesis-Funk-Symphonie ab.

** Interpret.: 06-08 ** Klang.: 08-09

Dance Into The Light

It's there in the eyes of the children,
in the faces smiling in the windows -
you can come on out, come on open the doors,
brush away the tears of freedom.

Now we're here there's no turning back,
we have each other, we have one voice:
hand in hand, we will lay the track
because the train is coming to carry you home -
come dance with me.

Dance into the light,
everybody dance into the light

There'll be no hiding in the shadows of fear,
there'll be no more chains to hold you.
The future is yours, you hold the key
and there are no walls with freedom

Now we're here, we won't go back,
we are one world, we have one voice:
side by side we are not afraid
because the train is coming to take you home -
come dance with me.

Dance into the light,
everybody dance into the light

Do you see the sun, it's a brand new day?
All the world's in your hands, now use it -
what's past is past, don't turn around,
brush away the cobwebs of freedom.

Now we're here there's no turning back,
you have each other, you have one voice:
hand in hand, you can lay the tracks
because the train is coming to take you home -
come dance with me.

Dance into the light,
everybody dance into the light

That's What You Said

I remember the night that you weren't at home
(had to work late is what I heard)
That's what you said -
I can never forget the way it felt,
you needed time some time to work it out,
that's what you said
and now I feel a fool

'Cos late at night I call your name,
I'm wondering what for,
'cos I've seen those other guys
sniffin' around your door.

Whatever happened to the words
'Lovers for all eternity'?
That's what you said,
I was your Romeo and you were my Juliet,
eternally -
that's what you said
and now I feel the fool.

'Cos late at night I hear your voice
calling out my name,
oh I know it's just a dream
but every nights the same.

I carried a torch for you, through the thick and thin -
you know it don't seem right that I won't see you again
No no

Late at night I call your name,
I'm wondering what for,
'cos I keep seeing those other guys
sniffin' around your door.

I carried a torch for you through the wind and rain -
I'll never forget you, but I won't see you again
No no

I thought your friends all liked me

Lorenzo

Once upon a time I made a lion roar -
he was sleeping in the sunbeams on the old zoo floor.
I had gone to see the park where my papa used to play,
it's called Villa Borgese and it's on the way
to East Africa

Down on Grand Comoro Island, where I grew past four,
I couls swim and fish and snorkel on the ocean floor,
and the wind laughed, and the wind laughed through the trees as if to say,
here's a child who'll want the world to go his way
in East Africa, in East Africa.

Suddenly for me the world turned upside down -
far from my friends the lions and the dolphins came this awful sound.

Dark shadows, sounds of thunder raging over me,
came this monster called 'A-dre-no-leu-ko-dys-tro-phy'
Where's my East Africa?

Well they said, they said, they said (the ones who knew it all)
they said from now on for you there will be no more standing tall,
so I took my parents' hands, I lifted my head to say
I'll just have to be a hero, there's no other way!
Back to East Africa
Back to East Africa
Back to East Africa
Come with me I'm going back, going back to East Africa.

Just Another Story

Father comes home 'cos his money's run out -
seems a little loose tonight, he starts to shout.

Dinner's not on the table, seems mother's not able,
she's staring at the TV.

You can smell it on his breath, feel it in his touch,
he never meant to hit her hard, but he's like that when he's had too much.

It's just another story 'bout going too far,
it's just another story 'bout going too far

Well the kid's at school, she getting good grades,
but the peer pressure's starting now - too bad, she had it made.

Seems there's always someone trying to push you to do something, you
know, aint the way they told you to -
it's hard to see
the things you taught her, how to be, it's like you told her
nothing, selective memory.

Come on just try iy, it's only a smoke, ain't gonna kill you, so
she takes a toke -
fade to grey.

it's just another story 'bout going too far,
it's just another story 'bout going too far.

Well the guys at work seemed OK, they'd buy you a drink, get you
laid, what's wrong with that?

Why'd they have more money than you, expensive cars, expensive
clothes, d'you ever think of what they do?

At night they're out, shakin people down, when they're walking
together seems they own the town.

But hey, who's gonna talk, you are their alibi, don't turn around,
don't ask questions, just walk -

it's just another story 'bout going too far,
it's just another story 'bout going too far

Love Police

Sometimes I lie awake, wondering if I'll make it out of here,
but the wind blows round my heels, so I stay -
I remember lying there, wishing I could be someone else
trying to find someone to get away.

If I asked him nicely d'you think he'd show me how to fly,
'cos the dust has weighed my wings down, and I'm too tired to try.

Sometimes I sit here hearing vaoices in my head -
I try yo understand, to make some sense.

I wonder, if I had to, would I lie to save myself?
A plea of guilty, but self defence.

If I asked him nicely d'you think he'd show me how?
I'm sure he's out there listening, but he's too tied up right now
to try.

Try, all of my sins
'cos I can't stop now,
just don't leave me behind.

Sometimes I lie awake wondering if I'll ever get out of here,
but the words stick in my throat and I stay.
I remember lying there, wishing I could be somewhere else,
trying to find somehow to get away.

If I asked him nicely d'you think he'd show me how to fly?
'cos the dust has weighed my wings down, and I'm too tired to try.

Wear My Hat

She came looking for me with her arms open wide,
like some long lost friend of mine.

She said 'Excuse me, but do you remmeber me?'
I said 'No, I don't believe I do.'
So she looked me up and down
and undressed me with her eyes,
then she said 'You've got everything I need, you've got everything
I want.'

So I said 'OK,

you can wear my hat,
you can have my coat,
you can take my shirt
'cos I don't need it.
You can wear my shoes,
and you can take my socks,
come on take my bag it's yours.
If you love it,
you can have it if you love it,
ain't no problem if you love it,
come on take it if you love it.'

So her friend came up to me
with a pen and paper in her hand,
expressing some interest in the number of my room.
She said 'Excuse me, but do you remmeber me?'
I said 'No,' she said 'Can I appeal to you?'

So I looked her up and down
and realizing her insinuations I blushed -
she said 'Listen babe you don't know me,
no you don't know me, but you owe me,
and I love you,
yes I love you
put your arms around me, 'cos I love you,
I got all your records and I love you.'

So I suggested

chorus

Well later that day this guy came to me
with a scrap of paper in his hand -
he said 'Hey buddy can you sign your name for me?'
I said 'Why, do I owe you money?' he said 'No'
I said 'Listen pal do I know you? Have we ever met?
why do you want me to put my name on that little piece of paper?'

He said 'I love you,
I dont know you but I love you,
like my brother I love you,
put your arms around me 'cos I love you.'

I said 'Hey let's not rush things -

chorus

It's In Your Eyes

It's in your eyes,
the love you hide away.
You can't disguise
the things you feel, the things you say.

If you just call my name
any time at all, I'll be there

I don't know why,
the way you're falling away from me.
i can't describe -
it's how it feels, it's what I see.

If you just call my name,
anytime at all
anytime at all
anytime at all, I'll be there

I look around, all I see is you -
but you gotta tell me that oyu want me too.
Look at me, you're all that I need, it's true.

I'm here, just call my name -
anytime at all, I'll be there.

I look around, all I see is you -
but you gotta tell me that oyu want me too.
Look at me, you're all that I need, it's true.

I can't disguise
the love I wait for you to share -
I can't deny
if you reach out and touch my hand it's there.

Or just call my name,
anytime at all
anytime at all,
anytime at all, I'll be there.

Oughta Know By Now

You oughta know by now
that a man can't hold on forever,
so why do you keep me waiting here
when you know it makes me want you more?

You oughta know by now
how it feels to be loved,
so why d'you keep me hangin' here,
with this stone around my heart, dragging me down, down, down

when all I am trying to do is get next to you, let me in, let me in.

You oughta know by now,
or maybe someone should show you
that a man needs to be loved
and even in this man's world
with you it don't come easy.

You oughta know by now
that no man can sleep at night
with a burning in his heart
that would tear this man apart -
take me out of my misery.

'cos all I'm trying to do is get next to you, let me in, let me in.

you oughta know by now
just how good it feels to be wanted,
and no man could love you more,
so why can't you show mw something,
just a little bit of something?

you oughta know by now
all the things a man has to do in his life,
all these things I do
you know I do it all for you, I do it all for you.

'Cos all I'm trying to do is get next to you,
yes all I'm trying to do is get next to you.

Let me in,
let me in,
let me in your heart.

Take Me Down

Seems I've lingered too long in the darkness -
unlock the door, turn the light on and wait.
I should know better than to rest on a promise
but this body before you has seen too much pain.

Take me down, take me down to the water,
take my hand, learn me all I should know.
Here I am, I'm waiting for you -
just give me a sign, oh feet please dont fail me now.

It's at this time we feel the emotion,
nothing is wasted, nothing is lost.
I'm sure that I've been here before sometime -
some bridges are reached but some are never crossed.

Take me down, take me down to the water,
take my hand, learn me all I should know.
Here I am, I'm waiting for you -
just give me a sign, dont let me go, no

Take me down, take me down to the water,
take my hand, learn me all I should know.
Here I am, I'm waiting for you -
just give me a sign, oh feet please dont fail me now.

Don't fail me now
'cos it's out of my control,
I'm coming with you,
I'm right beside you,
oh feet dont fail me now.

Seems I've lingered too long in the darkness -
unlock the door, turn the light on and wait.
I should know better than to rest on a promise
but this body before you has seen too much pain.

Take me down, take me down to the water,
take my hand, learn me all I should know.
Here I am, I'm waiting for you -
just give me a sign, dont let me go.

Take me down, take me down to the water,
take my hand, learn me all I should know.
Here I am, I'm waiting for you -
just give me a sign, oh feet please dont fail me now.

The Same Moon

When the daylight comes and I look across the room,
I see you're gone.
As the morning breaks and I reach to hold your hand
I can see, see I'm the only one.
Well, your clothes are gone and your bags are packed
but the bed's still warm where you lay -
now I need your love to come shinning through
to carry me, come carry me away.

If you choose a time, I'll catch the moon -
I'll see you there
from wherever I am, wherever you are
we'll find somewhere.
I see the same stars in the same sky
shining down on you,
I'll be looking up from wherever I am
and it's you I'll see if you're looking too.

There'll be says that seem much longer,
some nights will seem so cold,
but I see hope on the horizon
and it's gonna come soon - please don't be too long,
don't be too long.

If we choose a time we can catch the moon -
I'll see you there,
whenever it is, from wherever you are,
oh we'll find, yes we'll find somewhere -
are you looking at the same moon?

River So Wide

If we can cross at the place that divides us,
cross the river, the river so wide,
if we can smother the pain that's inside of us,
deny the demons that wait by our side,
we can find, find the light.

Our nights are filled with the light of the same moon,
we share the comfort of the same stars.
Our days are bright with the light of the same sun -
that don't matter, can't you see what we are,
what we are, what we become?

Keep our sights on the way ahead,
don't look back, it won't help us now.
the storm we left so far behind
seems a dark memory that starts to fade,
but till we see the light we will not be safe.

We all sink or swim in the same ocean,
break our skin and we will bleed -
our minutes pass with the same motion,
we face the same danger, we share the same needs,
we're all the same, you and me.

Keep our sights on the way ahead,
don't look back, it won't help us now.
Upstream, the river gets too wide
so we must build that bridge right here,
'cos if we wait we will not reach the other side.

See under that clear blue sky
the winds of change are blowing hard and long,
and they'll not stop to rest 'cos the change is gonna come.

Our nights are filled with the light of the same moon,
we share the comfort of the same stars.
Our days are bright with the light of the same sun -
that don't matter, can't you see what we are,
what we are, what we become?

Keep our sights on the way ahead,
don't look back, it won't help us now.
Upstream, the river gets too wide
and if we don't build that bridge right here, right now
you know we'll never reach the other side.

No Matter Who

Well it's a long, long road when you're out alone,
no matter what sider you're on,
but there's a heart of gold behind the smile
and it broght me to where I belong.

'Cos I'd set my sights on finding you
and I'm staying forever, you know it's true
Yes I'd set all my sights on finding you -
don't be lonely tonight, we can make it all right.

No matter what you say,
no matter eho you are,
love alwys finds a way,
finds a way to your heart.

Well it's a cold lonely road, but you can survive
no matter which way you choose,
and as long as there's life behind these eyes
I'm here with you, win or lose.

If you let your light shine on through
someone will come round to pull you through,
yes just let your light shine on through,
don't be lonely tonight, you can make it alright.

Just hold my hand,
come with me a while, I'll make you smile.
Just hold my hand -
there's someone who loves you, it's me, oh it's me.

No matter what you say,
no matter eho you are,
love alwys finds a way,
finds a way to your heart.

It's alright that you cry if you're lonely sometime,
no matter who's by your side,
'cos the love you look for is inside us all,
but it's something you have to find.

And I'd set my sights on finding you
and I'm staying forever, you know it's true
Yes I'd set all my sights on finding you -
don't be lonely tonight, we can make it all right.

No matter what you say,
no matter eho you are,
love alwys finds a way,
finds a way to your heart.

The Times They Are A-Changin'

Come gather 'round people
wherever you roam,
and admith that the waters
around you have grown,
and accept it that soon
you'll be drenched to the bone -
if your time to you
is woth savin'
then you better start swimmin'
or you'll sink like a stone
for the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
who propecise with your pen
and keep your eyes wide,
the chance wont come again,
and don't speak too soon
forr the wheel's still in spin
and there's no tell' who
that it's namin',
for the loser now
will be later to win
for the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen,
please heed the call -
don't stand in the doorway,
don't block the hall,
for he that gets hurt
will be the one who has stalled,
there's a battle
outside and it's ragin' -
it'll soon shake your windows
and rattle your walls
for the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
throughout the land,
and don't criticize
what you can't understand -
your sons and you daughters
are beyond your command,
your old road is
rapidly agin'
please get out of the new one
if you can't lend your hand
for the times they are a-changin'.

The line is drawn,
the curse is cast,
the slow one
will be the fast,
as the present now
will later be past -
the order is rapidly fadin',
and the first one now
will be the last
for the times they are a-changin'.
