Track 11 is followed by approximately 25 minutes of 'ambient Open Your Eyes' featuring segments of the entire album. The same track was played before each concert during the 97-98 tours of North America and Europe. Igor Khoroshev plays keyboards on tracks 1, 4, and 5.



With Open Your Eyes, the 4 original members (John Anderson, Steve Howe, Chris Squire, and Alan White) from the early 70's have teamed up with new member/producer Billy Sherwood. Anyone who was a fan in the early days will welcome this album as a return to more of the kind of well executed playing and crafted songs that made the band so popular. True, the songs are shorter, but the opening track "New State Of Mind" rocks with Squire's hard driving bass propelling things along. Jon Anderson's' voice is still a one-of-a-kind, and the tight harmonies reinforce the trademark sound of the band. Steve Howe demonstrates his mastery of the guitar in its electric and acoustic forms with his mixture of jazz/rock styles. There are a number of quieter love songs ("From The Balcony"), but the real change on this album is the harder more rocking edge that has resulted from the addition of Billy Sherwood into the mix. One track in particular, "Man In the Moon" seems to be a big departure from the Yes sound. Not a surprise when you consider that it was Sherwood who encouraged the band to record and perform live again.

Yes is a finely tuned machine that keeps on running like an antique car in mint condition. There is no reason for the band to change the signature features that make it what it is and make it great. On OPEN YOUR EYES classical guitars give way to sudden explosions of virtuoso electric solos; synthesizers soar off into the stratosphere and a dizzying array of incongruous sounds all fall into line to create a symbiotic and unified sound. But the jewels in the Yes crown are the ethereal vocals; the synchronized dissonant and concordant harmonies that at once conjure Gregorian chant, space travel, and the heavenly firmament itself. If the Sistine Chapel ceiling could sing out at you, it would probably sound like Yes. For fans, the pristine pedestal on which the band perches will remain soundly unshaken; OPEN YOUR EYES is exactly what they do best, just more of it. The lyrical theme is predominantly enlightenment, tolerance and abiding, unmarred hope. It's the alternative to alternative...disciplined, earnest and magical. For non-initiates OPEN YOUR EYES is a perfect eye-opener into the distinctive world of YES.



The reunited Yes returned to the studio for Open Your Eyes, a tepid affair that finds the group attempting to re-create the sound of Big Generator, of all things. Apart from the occasional new age excursion, the band devotes themselves to the kind of polished mainstream rock that was popular in the late '80s, all but ignoring the exploratory live work that made Keys to Ascension a success. Technically, the group plays very well, but there's little spark or imagination to the music, which is all the more frustrating since the performances suggest that the group is capable of much more.

Yes' latest all studio release, Open Your Eyes, isn't really the best album Yes have ever produced. Continuing in the more pop progressive end of the genre, there doesn't seem to be much difference between this Yes, and the Yes of the past few albums. Loosely, this is a concept album, where each song reinforces the theme of the title. While that seems recursive to say, some play on the theme in a spiritual sense (opening eyes to a greater wonder) others in a romantic sense...well, I suppose could also be a spiritual sense if we were to really pick the lyrics apart. This is Yes, nothing is really that obvious is it?

Comprising the band this time out for those tracking such things: Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Alan White, Steve Howe, and a new to the band, though not new to the prog scene, Billy Sherwood.

The album begins big, brassy, and in your face (though they will never be mistaken for a metal band). The instruments are upfront in the mix, the harmonized vocals getting lost during several tracks.

The opening three tracks are dense and leave no breathing room for any instruments and the vocals are shrill. But, things improve starting with track 4, and while the universal peace theme of "No Way We Can Lose" may be wishful thinking and the composition itself a bit overly sunny for a typical Yes tune, it is one of the better tunes on the disk. Maybe not very progressive, especially compared to previous Yes output, but it is one of the few that are allowed to breathe, where each instrument is allowed some space.

The next track, "Fortune Seller" is typical modern Yes, and really could have appeared on any of the last couple of albums. My personal favourite is the acoustic "From the Balcony," just Anderson on vocals and (I believe) Howe on guitar.

"Man On The Moon" seems more nursery-rhymish on a first listen (Yes does Doctor Seuss), but overall isn't a bad tune.

"Wonderlove," sappy lyrically but, yet again, another well arranged song. "Love Shine" is rockier than "Wonderlove," but here again a bit on the overly sentimental end.

Overall this is an average album, that gets better as it moves along.
