Though Yes has always been a band that's more than the sum of its parts, those parts are pretty impressive when taken on their own. The solo discographies of the various Yes members are extensive, beginning with the 1975 decision to release solo albums by each Yesman simultaneously. You won't hear any of that material on this compilation, though. FRIENDS AND RELATIVES gathers tracks by the band members and their various side projects, but it bears a decidedly contemporary slant. This lack of backtracking is exemplified by the openingcut, a very '90s-sounding Jon Anderson remix of the early-'80s Yes hit "Owner of a Lonely Heart", complete with electronic dance beats. Surprisingly, electronic beats and sequenced synth lines are prevalent on FRIENDS AND RELATIVES. Rick Wakeman's "Ice" and Steve Howe's "Red and White" both sport an electro-rhythmic sheen. The past is revisited eventually, on Howe's solo acoustic version of "Roundabout" and a superlative live version of "Close to the Edge", but this collection is more about where Yes is going than about where it'sbeen. FRIENDS AND RELATIVES would make a poor introduction to the group's music, but should be indispensable to fans who've followed the band into the '90s.

A good idea half-heartedly executed, this double-CD picks up roughly where The Family Album compilation leaves off. The emphasis here is on solo releases by band members from the mid-'80s onwards. Aside from his fashion-show remix of "Owner of a Lonely Heart," and Anderson's contributions from his recent The More You Know album are quite good; "Say" and "The More You Know," in particular, show the influence of current R&B in his sound. Given Wakeman's prolific (if uneven) output, it's not surprising that he's heavily represented -- in addition to worthy selections from Live at Hammersmith and No Expense Spared, there's the awful "Ice" from his Time Machine album. Bruford is slighted with a single Earthworks tune, electronic jazz pablum that is notably lacking in percussive showmanship. Howe fares better with his flamenco-based instrumental "Walk Don't Run," and fine Yes renditions from Not Neccesaily Acoustic. Squire is MIA, though ex-wife Nikki Squire's band Esquire gets the tap twice; as she performed backing vocals on "Hold Out Your Hand," and was assisted by Trevor Horn and Alan White, there's some completist value to including her. Perhaps it came down to securing permissions, but questions dog this compilation: why no Moraz & Bruford? Why no Jon & Vangelis? Why no Trevor Rabin? Why none of Wakeman's "Airs" trilogy? Why none of Peter Banks' releases? The selections are poorly chosen, and given that Yes's later years have not always been fruitful, it seems cruel to pass over their genuine moments of glory.

Paul Collins - All Music Guide

Friends and Relatives serves up a collection of mostly previously released solo material from Yes's various members. Jon Anderson's 1998 retread of "Owner of a Lonely Heart" is rather pointless, although it's hard to deny Rick Wakeman's epic "Journey." At 22 minutes, it proves that Yes are still capable of turning in portentous, convoluted, synthesizer-driven rock in a beat-driven age. Unfortunately, most of the better tracks here have already been issued on Keys to Ascension, making Friends and Relatives a superfluous compilation.

OWNER OF A LONELY HEART

Move yourself
You always live your life
Never thinking of the future
Prove yourself
You are the move you make
Take your chances win or loser

See yourself
You are the steps you take
You and you - and that's the only way

Shake - shake yourself
You're every move you make
So the story goes

Owner of a lonely heart
Owner of a lonely heart
Much better than - a
Owner of a broken heart
Owner of a lonely heart

Say - you don't want to chance it
You've been hurt so before

Watch it now
The eagle in the sky
How he dancin' one and only
You - lose yourself
No not for pity's sake
There's no real reason to be lonely
Be yourself
Give your free will a chance
You've got to want to succeed

Owner of a lonely heart
Owner of a lonely heart
Much better than - a
Owner of a broken heart
Owner of a lonely heart

Owner of a lonely heart

After my own decision
They confused me so                                      Owner of a lonely heart
My love said never question your will at all
In the end you've got to go
Look before you leap                                     Owner of a lonely heart
And don't you hesitate at all - no no

Owner of a lonely heart
Owner of a lonely heart
Much better than - a
Owner of a broken heart
Owner of a lonely heart
(repeat)

Owner of a lonely heart

Sooner or later each conclusion
Will decide the lonely heart                             Owner of a lonely heart
It will excite it will delight
It will give a better start                              Owner of a lonely heart
(Anderson/Howe)

Don't deceive your free will at all
Don't deceive your free will at all                      Owner of a lonely heart
Don't deceive your free will at all
Just receive it

THE PYRAMYDS OF EGYPT

he pyramyds of Egypt were built by the ancient Egyptians
five thousands years ago near the banks of the river Nile
and are the oldest of the seven ancient wonders of the world.
Built those tombs for the kings of ancient Egypt
who believed in life after death.
The kings were bedded with many personal treasures
to take with them into the next life.
The pyramyds of Egypt are the only ancient wonder
that remains standing to this present day.

ROUNDABOUT

(sung lyrics are shorter here than the original version)
I'll be the round about
The words will make you out 'n' out
You spend the day your way
Call it morning driving thru the sound and
In and out the valley

The music dance and sing
They make the children really ring
I spend the day your way
Call it morning driving thru the sound and
In and out the valley

In and around the lake
Mountains come out of the sky and they
Stand there
One mile over we'll be there and we'll see
You
Ten true summers we'll be there and
Laughing too
Twenty four before my love you'll see I'll be
There with you

SYNC OR SWIM

Instrumental.

ARTHUR

Upon a New Year's day
A host of knights did pray
That from the anvil one could draw the sword.

As each knight took his turn
They found the anvil, held it firm;
None worthy of a future King and Lord.

Sir Kay the bravest knight
Appeared to try his might
He dreamed of being King, as all the rest
To Arthur Sir Kay called to search
And bring for him a sword
In earnest Arthur set about his quest.

A churchyard in the wood
The sword and anvil stood
And Arthur drew the sword out of the stone
The anvil now defeated
His quest for the sword completed
A sword that was to place him on the throne
A sword that was to place him on the throne.

Sir Hector and Sir Kay saw the sword
And knelt to pray
Then gently took it from young Arthur's hand
They marvelled at his quest
Proclaiming to the rest
Arthur is the King of all this land
Arthur the King of all this land.

CLOSE TO THE EDGE - I. The Solid Time Of Change

A seasoned witch could call you from the depths of your disgrace,
And rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace,
And achieve it all with music that came quickly from afar,
Then taste the fruit of man recorded losing all against the hour.
And assessing points to nowhere, leading ev'ry single one.
A dewdrop can exalt us like the music of the sun,
And take away the plain in which we move,
And choose the course you're running.

Down at the edge, round by the corner,
Not right away, not right away.
Close to the edge, down by a river,
Not right away, not right away.

Crossed the line around the changes of the summer,
Reaching out to call the color of the sky.
Passed around a moment clothed in mornings faster than we see.
Getting over all the time I had to worry,
Leaving all the changes far from far behind.
We relieve the tension only to find out the master's name.

Down at the end, round by the corner.
Close to the edge, just by a river.
Seasons will pass you by.
I get up, I get down.
Now that it's all over and done,
Now that you find, now that you're whole.

CLOSE TO THE EDGE - II. Total Mass Retain

My eyes convinced, eclipsed with the younger moon attained with love.
It changed as almost strained amidst clear manna from above.
I crucified my hate and held the word within my hand.
There's you, the time, the logic, or the reasons we don't understand.

Sad courage claimed the victims standing still for all to see,
As armoured movers took approached to overlook the sea.
There since the cord, the license, or the reasons we understood will be.

Down at the edge, close by a river.
Close to the edge, round by the corner.
Close to the end, down by the corner.
Down at the edge, round by the river.

Sudden problems shouldn't take away the startled memory.
All in all, the journey takes you all the way.
As apart from any reality that you've ever seen and known.
Guessing problems only to deceive the mention,
Passing paths that climb halfway into the void.
As we cross from side to side, we hear the total mass retain.

Down at the edge, round by the corner.
Close to the end, down by a river.
Seasons will pass you by.
I get up, I get down.

CLOSE TO THE EDGE - III. I Get Up, I Get Down

In her white lace, you could clearly see the lady sadly looking.
Saying that she'd take the blame
For the crucifixion of her own domain.            I get up,
                                                  I get down,
                                                  I get up,
                                                  I get down.

Two million people barely satisfy.
Two hundred women watch one woman cry, too late.
The eyes of honesty can achieve.
How many millions do we deceive each day?
I get up, I get down.
I get up, I get down.

In charge of who is there in charge of me.
Do I look on blindly and say I see the way?
The truth is written all along the page.
How old will I be before I come of age for you?
I get up, I get down.
I get up, I get down.
I get up, I get down.

CLOSE TO THE EDGE - IV. Seasons Of Man

The time between the notes relates the color to the scenes.
A constant vogue of triumphs dislocate man, it seems.
And space between the focus shape ascend knowledge of love.
As song and chance develop time, lost social temp'rance rules above.
Ah, ah.

Then according to the man who showed his outstretched arm to space,
He turned around and pointed, revealing all the human race.
I shook my head and smiled a whisper, knowing all about the place.
On the hill we viewed the silence of the valley,
Called to witness cycles only of the past.
And we reach all this with movements in between the said remark.

Close to the edge, down by the river.
Down at the end, round by the corner.
Seasons will pass you by,
Now that it's all over and done,
Called to the seed, right to the sun.
Now that you find, now that you're whole.
Seasons will pass you by,
I get up, I get down.
I get up, I get down.
I get up, I get down.
I get up.

2nd Disc:

NO EXPENSE SPARED

You say you won''t believe me
When I tell you that I'm scared
And the way you walk you walk towards me.
Only shows that you once cared
Now there's no, no expense spared
No expense spared (2x)
No expense, no, no

No, no, no
Everybody knows,
Everybody's singing in the one  man show of life
My life, some life
Some life (5x)
Life (3x)(Rick Wakeman/Adam Wakeman)

Cheap, so cheap, a bargain,
Buy it at the shop, at the store with a cheque or card
Tell me now, what should I be doing here ?
No expense is spared
So any little deal will do, I give it no regard.
Hanging around, that's all I seem to do when you're around
Buy, buy, buy our product
Well below the recommended price, it's not so hard
Absolutely stunning
That'll do nicely, slap it on the card today
Oh I can't see, what you want from me,
No expense is spared
I haven't any money so American Express will pay.
No commitment, no financial guarantee

I should own the bank, then
Take it all away to play the town
The price is down
And there's no expense spared for me.

SAY

You know what they say when they say - you got it coming to you
(Only in a matter of time will it come to you)
And then you're faced with the choice - I guess to give your love
(It's only when you're ready to do it)
It's just a point of the game - you've gotta push it to you
(Opening the spirit in your heart)

And now you're finally convinced - it will work for you
I guess that's what they try to say to you
(Na si ma wU, Na si mEndE pE tU milla munE mundi)
To you, to you, to you
(Na si ma wU, Na si mEndE pE tU milla munE mundi)
And you, and you, and you
(Na si ma wU, Na si mEndE pE tU milla munE mundi)
To you, to you, to you

They say it's better to be blind - to see what really happens
(I don't believe that for one minute)
I'm just a cog in the wheel - I twist and then I turn
(Anyway is better than no way at all)
Please tell me where are you now - an independent feeling
(You imagine what you want to be)
You've grown so tall in your world - begin to see the light
I guess that's what they try to say to you
To you, to you, to you

I can rely on your love - to help me through tomorrow
(Only if you want to be alive)
Alive and clear as it can be - I want you on my side
(Only if you promise to be true)
I do reach out for the time - to make it all better
(Better than forever really to be yeah)
So now the game is coming clear - clearer into view

I guess that's what they try to say to you
To you, to you, to you
(Na si ma wU, Na si mEndE pE tU milla munE mundi)
And you, and you, and you
(Na si ma wU, Na si mEndE pE tU milla munE mundi)
To you, to you, to you
(Na si ma wU, Na si mEndE pE tU milla munE mundi)

Excerpts from Tales From Topographic Oceans
The Revealing Science Of God - Dance Of The Dawn
The Remembering - High The Memory
The Ancient - Giants Under The Sun

RITUAL

(this version of 'Tales...' is much shorter than the original)

Dawn of light lying between a silence and solid sources,
Chased amid fusions of wonder, in moments hardly seen forgotten,
Won't to follow, only tunes of a different age, as the links span
Our endless caresses for the freedom of life everlasting.

Ours the story shall we carry on
And search the forest of the sun
We dream as we dream! Dream as one

In the days of summers so long
We danced as evenings sang their song
We wander out the days so long

Whispers of clay
Alternate ways

Do the leaves of green stay greener in the autumn
Does the colour of the sun turn crimson white
Does a shadow come between us in the winter
Is the movement really light

And I heard a million voices singing
Acting to the story that they had heard about
Does on child know the secret and can say it
Or does it all come out along without you
                        along without you
                        along without you

Where does reason stop and killing just take over
Does a lamb cry out before we shoot it dead
Are there many more in comfort understanding
Is the movement in the head

And I heard a million voices singing
Acting to the story that they had heard about
Does one child know the secret and can say it
Or does it all come out along without you
                        along without you
                        along without you

Hold me my love, hold me today, call me round
Travel we say, wander we choose, love tune
Lay upon me, hold me around lasting hours
We love when we play
We hear a sound and alter our returning
Drift the shadows, course our way back home

Look me my love sentences move dancing away
We join we receive
As our song memories long hope in a way
Nous sommes du soleil
Hold me around lasting hours
We love when we play
Nous sommes du soleil
We love when we play
Nous sommes du soleil

THE MORE YOU KNOW

How do you get even with your sacred senses
Ebery time, your Brother don't mind
I don't know we've been running through your friendship
Try to, deep in time
Your Brother don't know

First to touch, when you lose
Finally time again
Talk, talk, talk will spill the cup
Then break you down and then
Put your thoughts to action
And the consequence is mine
You don't know
You don't know
You're making time

So who's to blame, don't ever doubt it
Your Brother don't know
I said who's to blame
Don't ever doubt it
Your Brother don't know

Last time you tried to ride it
Check yourself and realise
Your ability, your ability, your ability
And the more you try to push that limit
How you justify you might not get it
So you're backing out, a sign of your disability

Eh! I don't mind and they don't care
But your Brother does
I said I don't mind and they don't care
But your Brother does

Who to believe, Who to believe in
Who to believe, Who to believe in

Acts of faith set you apart
And it's alright 'cos your Brother don't know

Escape gets you going
So you finally try again
But the down and out they call the police
So they push you back again
And then you get to get it screaming
And the lessons you seem to never learn
It's all about being human
I believe it is your turn

Say my Brother is my Brother (Brother)
My Brother is my soul
I said my Brother is my Brother (Brother)
Yes Brother is my soul
Say my Brother

JOURNEY

By horse, by rail, by land, by sea, our journey starts
Two men incensed by one man's journey from the past
In Iceland, where the mountain stood with pride
They set off with their guide
To reach the mountain side

Roped as one for safety through the long descent
Into the crater of volcanic rock they went
Look up from our telescopic lair,
One star for us to share,
We continue on our prayer.

Crystals of opaque quartz, studded limpid tears,
Forming magic chandeliers, lighting blistered galleries.

[Narration:]
**Admiring shades of lava, which imperceptibly passed
from reddish brown to bright yellow, their way lit by crystals
appearing as lighted globes, they continued through the lava
gallery which gently sloped until they reached the intersection
of two roads.  Without hesitation, Professor Liddenbrook chose
the eastern tunnel.  And the journey continued, through a succession
of arches appearing before them as if they were the isles of a
Gothic cathedral.  The walls were enhanced with impressions
of rock weeds, and mosses from the Silurian epoch.**

[music]

[Narration:]
**The eastern route they had taken had come to a dead end.
With three day's walk back to the fork to find Arnie Saclosin's [Arne Saknussemm's]
original route, they found their water rations were limited
to one day.  Knowing their only chance of finding water was
on that route, they set off for the fork, and there, finally,
they fell, almost lifeless on the third day.  After sleep, they
continued down the other tunnel in their quest for water.  And
while searching on his own, Hans, the guide, heard the sound
of water thundering behind a granite wall, and with a pick axe,
attacked the wall so as to allow a stream of boiling water to
enter and cool in their tunnel.  Not only had they found life in
the water, but they had also found a flowing guide to the centre
of the earth.  They called the stream the Hansbath.**

[music]

[Narration:]
Replenished with the water, the journey continued with haste,
but somehow they found themselves separated.  Professor Liddenbrook's
nephew, Axel, found himself alone.  His mind was seized with
unparalleled fear, and he saw memories of home flashing before
him.  His fiance, Grauben.  His house and friends in Hamburg.
He saw hallucinations of all the incidents of the journey.  And
unworthy as he felt, he knelt in fervent prayer.  And then in
panic he ran blindly through a tunnel, only to reach a dead end,
where he fell panting for breath.  In the darkness, he cried.
Voices.  Voices.  Voices.  He heard voices.  He heard his uncle's voice.
Due to the shape of the gallery and the conducting power of the rocks,
his uncle's voice was uncannily  traveling around the walls.  And by
means of their chronometers, they discovered they were four miles
apart.  So Axel set about the task of rejoining the Professor and
their guide.

AMERICA

Let us be lovers
We'll marry our fortunes together
I've got some real estate here in my bag

So we bought a pack of cigarettes
And Mrs. Wagner's Pies
And walked on, walked on, walked on
To look for America

'Kathy,' I said as we boarded a Greyhound to Pittsburg,
'Michigan seems like a dream to me now'
It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw
All gone to look for America
All gone to look for America

Laughing on the bus
Playing games with the faces
She said the man in the Gabardine suit was a spy
I said, 'Be carefull his bow tie is really a camera.'

Kathy I'm lost I said
Although I knew she was sleeping
I'm empty and I'm aching
And I don't know why

Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all come to look for America
All come to look for America
All come to look for America
