Hollywood Records remastered 1991 release with bonus tracks: Fat Bottomed Girls (1991 remix) and Bicycle Race (1991 remix)

In 1978, all eyes were on Queen as they released the follow-up to their monster global hit NEWS OF THE WORLD. Predictably, JAZZ didn't achieve the massive commercial success of it's predecessor, but in aesthetic terms, it's a solid statement, and a marked progression of the band's musical vision. Though the band was already well into their "eclectic" mode by this time, the stylistic ventures the band takes on this album bring them even further afield from the heavy rock they're best known for. Freddie Mercury kicks things off with"Mustapha", a nod to his Middle Eastern origins. Queen exhibits a ribald sense of humour on "Fat Bottomed Girls". Mercury indulges his Broadway tendencies to the hilt on "IF You Can't Beat Them" and "Don't Stop Me Now", which sound like they could have come from some obscure '50s musical. The jazzy"Dreamer's Ball" and the mellow, romantic "In Only Seven Days" provide welcome contrast. Amid all this eclecticism, though, the standout tracks are the propulsive rockers "Let Me Entertain You" (whose promise they fulfil) and "Dead on Time".

Although 1978's Jazz was a more unfocused affair than its three outstanding predecessors ( A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, and News of the World), it still contained its share of classics. The two best-known tracks are undoubtedly the thick riff-rocker "Fat Bottomed Girls" and the carefree "Bicycle Race," which were issued together as a hit double-sided single. The album received some controversy when the band staged an all-nude female bicycle race at London's Wimbledon Stadium, with a poster of the event being included in vinyl copies of Jazz. Still, peculiar packaging gimmicks couldn't dampen such strong tracks as the soaring "Don't Stop Me Now" (a U.K. Top Ten single), the album-opening Middle Eastern rocker "Mustapha," the concert staple "Let Me Entertain You," and the thunderous heavy metal of "Dead On Time." There were more love songs on Jazz than your average Queen release ("Jealousy," "In Only Seven Days," "Leaving Home Ain't Easy," "Dreamer's Ball"), as well as unwarranted filler ("Fun It," "More of That Jazz"). Despite its shortcomings, Jazz continued Queen's winning streak.

Greg Prato - All Music Guide

Jazz has been unfairly slagged in some quarters as an inconsistent and unfocused record; granted, there's a bit of filler cluttering the second half, but as for the latter criticism, it's not like A Night at the Opera wasn't all over the map. The fact that it didn't produce any huge hit singles in the U.S. probably hasn't helped its reputation, but given half a chance, Jazz emerges as one of Queen's most playful, maniacally entertaining records. There are a few Freddie Mercury piano ballads and unusually hopped-up metallic rockers, but about half of Jazz is given over to quirky lyrics and/or stylistic detours (which, oddly enough, don't include any jazz, unless you count the music hall swing of "Dreamers Ball"). Kicking off with the pseudo-Middle Eastern kitsch of "Mustapha," Jazz's first half is its strongest, highlighted by the double-A-sided single "Fat Bottomed Girls"/"Bicycle Race"; the former is a hilariously macho boogie that finds Mercury posing as Sir Mix-A-Lot's spiritual forebear, and the latter's childlike enthusiasm masks a subtle double entendre and an indirect reference to the all-female nude bicycle race the band staged as a promotional stunt (a poster of which was included). The second half climaxes with the, er, flamboyant U.K. Top Ten hit "Don't Stop Me Now," a Broadway showstopper at heart; it's preceded by the disco-rock of "Fun It" and the almost pastoral ballad "Leaving Home Ain't Easy," among others. It's difficult to discuss Jazz without referring to individual tracks one by one, since it can come off as a collection of moments, but its anything-goes diversity actually helps tie it together. Plus, there's a giddy sense of fun through most of the album, which helps make it Queen's strongest since A Night at the Opera.

Picture disc from France - at least two different versions: white riders on black and black riders on white. Rumours of a third version with red riders, but this seems doubtful. Limited edition with fold out pervy poster in most countries. Israeli LP with stamped sleeve, different inside picture and different poster. Taiwan sleeve has subtitle "Includes Bicycle Race and 4 page colour poster"

Fat Bottomed Girls / Bicycle Race
Released in all countries - double a-side in most
Standard picture sleeve in most countries with some variations in wording and underwear. Different sleeves in Japan (a bit), Hungary and France. The funny one on the Box of Tricks poster is a Belgian promo - one of a series of four (more details on the other three as I get them). An Italian picture sleeve in the style of the Jazz cover/German Mustapha/Argentinian Don't Stop Me Now exists, which is either a bootleg or one of the rarest sleeves around.

Don't Stop Me Now / In Only Seven Days
Released in most countries
"More of that Jazz" b-side in Japan and USA
Standard picture sleeve in most countries. Different sleeves in Japan and Argentina (which is rumoured to be the only 7" picture sleeve from Argentina)

Jealousy / Fun It
Released in USA and Russia only
"Don't Stop Me Now" b-side in Russia
Picture sleeve in Russia (two versions - brown and pink (rarer)) which is a blue flexi-disc. There is a special 1980 Olympic Games item which is a spiral bound book containing a large number of flexidiscs and associated band biographies. Jealousy is included in this.

Mustapha / Dead On Time
Released in Germany, Spain and Yugoslavia only
"In Only Seven Days" b-side in Yugoslavia
Each has a different picture sleeve.

Fat Bottomed Girls

Are you gonna take me home tonight?
Ah down beside that red fire light
Are you gonna let it all hang out?
Fat bottomed girls you make the rocking world go round

Hey I was just a skinny lad
Never knew no good from bad
But I knew love before I left my nursery
Left alone with big fat Fanny
She was such a naughty nanny
Heap big woman you made a bad boy out of me
Hey hey!

I've been singing with my band
Across the wire across the land
I've seen every blue eyed floozy on the way
But their beauty and their style
Went kind of smooth after a while
Take me to them lovely ladies every time

Oh won't you take me home tonight
Oh down beside your red firelight
Oh and you give it all you got
Fat bottomed girls you make the rocking world go round
Fat bottomed girls you make the rocking world go round

Hey listen here
Now your mortgages and homes
And the stiffness in your bones
Ain't no beauty queens in this locality (I tell you)
Oh but I still get my pleasure
Still get my greatest treasure
Heap big woman you made a bad boy out of me

Oh you gonna take me home tonight (Please)
Oh down beside that red firelight
Oh you gonna let it all hang out?
Fat bottomed girls you make the rocking world go round
Fat bottomed girls you make the rocking world go round
Get on your bikes and ride
Fat bottomed girls
Fat bottomed girls

Jealousy

Oh how wrong can you be?
Oh to fall in love was my very first mistake
How was I to know I was far too much in love to see?
Oh jealousy look at me now
Jealousy you got me somehow
You gave me no warning
Took me by surprise
Jealousy you led me on
You couldn't lose you couldn't fail
You had suspicion on my trail

How how how all my jealousy
I wasn't man enough to let you hurt my pride
Now I'm only left with my own jealousy

Oh how strong can you be
With matters of the heart?
Life is much too short
To while away with tears
If only you could see just what you do to me
Oh jealousy you tripped me up
Jealousy you brought me down
You bring me sorrow you cause me pain
Jealousy when will you let go?
Gotta hold of my possessive mind
Turned me into a jealous kind

How how how all my jealousy
I wasn't man enough to let you hurt my pride
Now I'm only left with my own jealousy
But now it matters not if I should live or die
'Cause I'm only left with my own jealousy

If You Can't Beat 'em

Keep your chin up when you're feeling lonely
Don't let them get you down
Ain't no use in sitting all alone
Hangin' around for someone to call
Ohh they won't come knocking at all
Don't run and hide even if it hurts you inside
So I said give as good as you get

If you can't beat them join them
You better do it 'cos it makes you feel good
If you can't beat them join them
You're never gonna help yourself

Keep your fingers off my money
Don't try and pull me down
You're taking me out to wine and dine me
Trying to wind me round and around
Invite me to your little contract Ha! Ha!
Rumour has it that you could play dirty
I tell you what I'll do about that
I'm playing at the wrong game yeah!

If you can't beat them join them
You've got to do it 'cos it makes you feel good
If you can't beat them join them
You're never gonna help yourself

If you can't beat them join them
You've got to do it 'cos it makes you feel good
If you can't beat them join them
It's everyone for themselves

In Only Seven Days

Monday the start of my holiday
Freedom for just one week
Feels good to get away ooh

Tuesday I saw here down on the beach
I stood and watched a while
And she looked and smiled at me

Wednesday I didn't see her
I hoped that she'd be back tomorrow
And then on Thursday my luck had changed
She stood there all alone
I went and asked her name
I never thought that this could happen to me
In only seven days
It would take a hundred or more
For memories to fade

I wish Friday could last forever
I held her close to me
I couldn't bear to leave her there

Saturday just twenty four hours
Oh no I'm going back home on Sunday
Ooh so sad alone

Dreamer's Ball

Oh I used to be your baby
Used to be your pride and joy
You used to take me dancing
Just like any other boy
But now you've found another partner
You've left me like a broken toy

Oh it's someone else you're taking
Someone else you're playing to
Honey though I'm aching
Know just what I have to do
If I can't have you when I'm waking
I'll go to sleep and dream of you

Oh take me take me take me
To the dreamer's ball
I'll be right on time and I'll dress so fine
You're gonna love me when you see me
I won't have to worry
Take me take me
Promise
'Till it's morning
It's all been true

Oh take me take me take me
I'm your play thing now
You make my life worthwhile
With the slightest smile
Or destroy me with a barely perceptible whisper
Gently take me remember I'll be dreaming of my baby
At the dreamer's ball

Take me hold me
Remember what you told me
You'd meet me at the dreamer's ball
I'll meet you at the dreamer's ball

Fun It

Everybody in the morning
Should do a good turn all right
Everybody in the night time
Should have a good time all night

You're the one you're the best in town

Hey everybody everybody gonna have a good time tonight
Just shaking the soles of your feet
Everybody everybody gonna have a good time tonight
That's the only soul you'll ever meet

They say that moving the body's right it's all right
That's the only one part of being alive all right all right

Groove on out groove on up OK
Do your thing do your thing your way
Get you kicks get your tricks with me
Get up and dance honey fun's for free

Just shaking the soles of your feet
Everybody everybody gonna have a good time tonight
That's the only sole you'll ever meet

Leaving Home Ain't Easy

I take a step outside
And I breathe the air
And I slam the door
And I'm on my way
I won't lay no blame
I won't call you names
'Cause I've made my break
And I won't look back
I've turned my back
On those endless games

I'm all through with ties
I'm all tired of tears
I'm a happy man
Don't it look that way?
Shaking dust from my shoes
There's a road ahead
And there's no way back home
Ohh but I have
Leaving home ain't easy
Oh I never thought it would be easy
Leaving on your own
Oh is the main thing calling me back?
Leaving home ain't easy
On the one your leaving home

Stay my love my love please stay
Stray my love what's wrong my love?
What's right my love?
Ohh leaving home ain't easy
I thought how could I think of leaving
Leaving on your own
Still trying to persuade me that
Leaving home ain't necessary
Leave the only way
Leaving home ain't easy
But may be the only way

Don't Stop Me Now

Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real good time
I feel alive and the world it's turning inside out Yeah!
I'm floating around in ecstasy
So don't stop me now don't stop me
'Cause I'm having a good time having a good time

I'm a shooting star leaping through the skies
Like a tiger defying the laws of gravity
I'm a racing car passing by like Lady Godiva
I'm gonna go go go
There's no stopping me

I'm burning through the skies Yeah!
Two hundred degrees
That's why they call me Mister Fahrenheit
I'm trav'ling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic man of you

Don't stop me now I'm having such a good time
I'm having a ball don't stop me now
If you wanna have a good time just give me a call
Don't stop me now ('Cause I'm having a good time)
Don't stop me now (Yes I'm having a good time)
I don't want to stop at all

I'm a rocket ship on my way to Mars
On a collision course
I am a satellite I'm out of control
I am a sex machine ready to reload
Like an atom bomb about to
Oh oh oh oh oh explode

I'm burning through the skies Yeah!
Two hundred degrees
That's why they call me Mister Fahrenheit
I'm trav'ling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic woman out of you

Don't stop me don't stop me don't stop me
Hey hey hey!
Don't stop me don't stop me
Ooh ooh ooh (I like it)
Don't stop me have a good time good time
Don't stop me don't stop me
Ooh ooh Alright
I'm burning through the skies Yeah!
Two hundred degrees
That's why they call me Mister Fahrenheit
I'm trav'ling at the speed of light
I wanna make a supersonic woman of you

Don't stop me now I'm having such a good time
I'm having a ball don't stop me now
If you wanna have a good time
Just give me a call
Don't stop me now ('Cause I'm having a good time)
Don't stop me now (Yes I'm having a good time)
I don't wanna stop at all

More Of That Jazz

If you're feeling tired and lonely
Uninspired and lonely
If you're thinking how the days seem long
All you're given

Give me no more
No more of that jazz

Only football gives us thrills
Rock 'n roll just pays the bills
Only our team is the real team
Bring out the dogs get on your feet
Lie on the floor
Kinda thinking I've heard that line before
Just more more
More of that jazz
More no more of that jazz
Give me no more no more of that jazz

Oh no matter fool
Get no business hanging around and telling lies
Bicycle races are coming your way
If you can't beat them join them
Fun it
Are you gonna let it all hang out?
Fat bottomed girls you make the rocking world go round
