"...It's a strong album...with no hint of nostalgia....McLaughlin's guitar playing remains fleet and expressive, and his compositional powers show no sign of waning either..."

Q Magazine, 7/96, p.119 3 Stars - Good

"The post-jazz guitar icon hasn't come up with an album this diverse and star-studded for almost 20 years....A lovably eclectic mess that somehow manages to make perfect sense, THE PROMISE delivers." - Rating: A

Entertainment Weekly (2/23-3/1/96 p.127)

John McLaughlin shoots out in many different directions during this very diverse release. He trades off with fellow guitarist Jeff Beck on "Django," jams his own "Thelonious Melodius" in a trio with organist Joey DeFrancesco and drummer Dennis Chambers, has a duet with DeFrancesco (who switches to trumpet) on "No Return," stretches out with tenor great Michael Brecker on the 14 1/2-minute "Jazz Jungle," collaborates on acoustic guitar with Paco De Lucia and Al Di Meola, plays Indian music with Zakir Hussain and Trilok Gurtu, and interacts with altoist David Sanborn -- among others. A good introduction to latter-day John McLaughlin, this colorful set has plenty of surprises.

Scott Yanow, All-Music Guide

'The Promise' is a career record for John McLaughlin, a look both forward and back at his musical life, a blend of Eastern meditativeness with Western torque and horsepower. He remains a man on a very intense mission. Featuring a cast of Who's Who of modern jazz and pop/rock, The Promise has something for everyone, regardless of their aural dialect. Starting with the power trios: Joey DeFrancesco and Dennis Chambers; and Sting and Vinnie Colaiuto; moving to the charged fusion of Jeff Beck, Tony Hymas, Pino Palladino, Marc Mondesir, Michael Brecker, Jim Beard, and Don Alias; continuing with the Eastern music of Zakir Hussain, Nishat Khan, and Trilok Gurtu; and climaxing with the sensational acoustic environment of Paco de Lucia and Al Di Meola. The Promise is what McLaughlin fans have been waiting years to hear. You may recall that John has been involved with several groups over the years, including: Lifetime, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis, and Shakti. From each of his adventures, McLaughlin is constantly reborn with a little more erudition, but still the same passion. The Promise is a reminder that the force is still with him.

from VerveInteractive.com
