After finally releasing a new track, commissioned by Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany, Kraftwerk proceeded to open it up to a whole new set of remixers. Featuring 4 remixes by Detroit's influential Underground Resistance, one from British electronic musicians Orbital, and one from seminal DJ/producer Francois Kevorkian, this pair of 12"s shows what Kraftwerk can sound like in the modern world. Considering that Kraftwerk is often quoted as a major influence on Detroit techno, its unsurprising that the remixes by the Underground Resistance far surpass either of the other two mixes. Revamping the songs in a "Kraftwerk living in Detroit" sort of way, UR pay homage to one of the forefathers of their art.

Fortunately, none of the mixes mimics another, a relatively difficult feat when working with material as sparse as a Kraftwerk song. All of the remixes are worthwhile additions to the vast canon of Kraftwerk material.

"Einen Jingle über Schokoriegel oder Damenbinden kann ich nicht ernst nehmen" - ändert Karl Bartos jetzt vielleicht seine Meinung?

London (jas) - Die Jungs von Orbital hatten dieses Jahr wohl keine Zeit, die Weltausstellung in Hannover zu besuchen. Sie waren damit beschäftigt, den Track "EXPO 2000" von Kraftwerk noch einmal neu zu bearbeiten. Am 13. November erscheint die Maxi-CD bei EMI. Bleibt zu hoffen, dass dieser Remix einige Hörer findet.

Die offizielle Hymne konnte ja, zumindest zu Beginn der Expo, nicht viele Besucher auf das Gelände locken. Die Resonanz auf die lang erwartete neue Kraftwerk-Single war insgesamt eher negativ, von mangelnder Kreativität und Geschäftemacherei war die Rede. Besonders deutlich kritisierte Karl Bartos das jüngste Werk seiner früheren Band:

"Die habe ich mir auch gleich gekauft und habe sie bis jetzt zwei oder dreimal angehört. Das war ja eine Art Dienstleistungsauftrag oder Werbejingle, der, wie ich gehört habe, relativ gut bezahlt worden ist. Was mich für sie freut, aber einen Jingle über Schokoriegel oder Damenbinden kann ich nicht ernst nehmen. Die EXPO ist vielleicht ein anderes Produkt, aber der Song bleibt ein Jingle, ist eine Dienstleistung, und den kann ich nicht als richtigen Output ansehen."

So was lässt man natürlich nicht gerne auf sich sitzen.

Six wonderful remixes of Kraftwerk's most recent single Expo 2000. DJ Ronaldo (a.k.a. Aztec Mystic - Knights Of The Jaguar) has created essentially a new song but one that pumps and grooves in all the right places. Underground Resistance gives us three short but very musical interpretations of Expo 2000. Francois K and Rob Rives offer a very good tech - house version and Orbital pump the track up with a Giorgio Moroder-style chugging bassline, interesting sounds and still keeps true to the spirit of the original. Kraftwerk will always be one of the originators and the way these remixes are done shows that all involved have a deep respect for this classic group's artistry.

'I grant you that I'm not a big fan of that english pop group... The faux pas to bring back Rock'n Roll attitude into techno biz and producing a kind of cyborg aura by wearing silly headtorches have brougt them into glossy magazines, but for the price of loosing credibility. Surprisingly the remix is absolutely acceptable - but to show more enthusiasm is hard for me....'

It is amazing, when you think about it, that these guys can release a single of this quality in the twilight of their careers. A lesson surely to all those formerly great musicians who paid the ultimate MOR price for losing touch with their musical origins.

Influenced in tiny part by developments in electronic music, Kraftwerk, nonetheless, remain utterly unique. All the hallmarks are here, especially that strangely beautiful contradiction between a harsh industrial means of production and the richly emotional outcome. Music technology has progressed relentlessly since Kraftwerk recorded the significant body of their work but it is testimony to the uniqueness of their vision that it has, in many ways, failed to have a significant effect on their sound.

Zum Ende der Expo 2000 in Deutschland bringt das Elektroprojekt noch eine Maxi mit Remixen ihres Tracks "Expo 2000" auf den Markt, allerdings nicht selbst remixt, sondern von diversen anderen Leuten. Es beginnt mit dem "Orbital Mix", der dem KRAFTWERK-Track seine Atmosphär läßt und eigentlich auch von Hütter und Konsorten selbst sein könnte. Es folgt ein tranciger "Francois K + Rob Rives Mix" mit, der nicht schlecht ist und auch die Expo-Roboterstimmen erklingen läßt. Der "DJ Rolando Mix" ist auch nicht allzu übel, klingt wie ein Clubmix mit hüpfenden Bässen. Der "Underground Resistance Mix" piept herum und hat einen Tanzrhythmus unterlegt, leider absolut nicht erwähnenswert. Der "Ur Infiltrated Mix" ist auch nur dahingeschludert und langweilt und der "Ur Thought 3 Mix" läßt wenigstens noch KRAFTWERK irgendwo raushören. Alles in allem eine eher unnötige CD, nur für Hardcore-KRAFTWERK-Fans. So hat sich die Expo wenigstens für KRAFTWERK gelohnt, zwei CDs innerhalb eines Jahres ist ja fast schon Overkill.
