The first of Kraftwerk's many extended periods of silence was broken with the release of Computer World, a record exploring the ramifications of living in a society dominated by technology. A tightly honed, starkly minimalist effort, its implementation of recent technological advances yields a brighter and sharper sound than ever before; the single "Pocket Calculator" typifies the group at their most playful, while "Home Computer" eerily presages the emergence of techno and house music later in the decade. Drei Jahre hatten Kraftwerk in völliger Anonymität an Computerwelt gearbeitet, das 1981 erschien. Computer waren auf dem Vormarsch, eroberten den Alltag, veränderten die Welt. Mit selbstentwickeltem Instrumentarium und neuer Technologie verpackten Kraftwerk das Thema Globalisierung in amüsante Popsongs und Dance-Music.

Im Titelstück vermitteln Code-Worte über Datenbanken Faszination und Horror der gläsernen Gesellschaft. Das lustige Liedchen "Taschenrechner" mit Casio- und Texas-Taschenrechner-Klängen gab es sogar als japanisch gesungene Version "Dentaku". Der elektronische Blues "Computerliebe" nahm Internet-Chats vorweg. Auf "Heimcomputer", bis heute am meisten gesampelt, kündigen die synkopierten Rhythmen Techno- und House-Music an. Und "It's More Fun To Compute" ironisierte wiederum das gewählte Thema. Weder kopflastig noch gefühlskalt hatten sie der Computermusik Seele eingehaucht.

Das Album gelangte in Deutschland auf Platz 7 und in England auf Platz 15. Ein Jahr später brach dort der wahre Kraftwerk-Boom aus, als die Alben Computerwelt, Mensch-Maschine und Trans Europa Express gleichzeitig in den Charts standen.

It's been three years since the last Kraftwerk album. Three years of Gary Numans, Human Leagues and Yellow Magic Orchestras. And what has Kraftwerk been doing all that time? Growing soft, judging from the evidence here. On a purely technical level, the Kraftwerk of Computer World is still miles ahead of its imitators/competitors. Synthetic percussion percolates; mini-melodies - some with the sound quality of bell tones, others sounding like static or "Space Invaders" - come buzzing out of nowhere before fading out in waves of micro-delay. The synth programming is immaculate, but none of the pieces here (with the exception of the haunting "Its More Fun To Compute") even approach the glacial majesty of Trans-Europe-Express or The Man-Machine. It's not as light as YMO's stuff ("Numbers" features counting in various languages, including Japanese - dig or acknowledgment?) but it's not that far away, either. As the song titles suggest, the underlying theme of Computer World is the prevalence of technology in our lives. Electronically processed voices tell us of the heartbreak of computer dating ("Computer Love"), and the joys of owning a "Pocket Calculator" and a "Home Computer." The album cover, which depicts the band members as androids programming or being programmed by a computer console, is thematically clever, but, unfortunately for Kraftwerk, this time the joke is on them.
