With saxophonist Jan Garbarek and bassist Charlie Haden along for the ride, Keith Jarrett indulges in three slow, rambling, meditative, vaguely neo-classical concertos for piano and string orchestra. While a few of Jarrett's and Garbarek's passages here and there have a syncopated jazz feeling, this is mostly contemporary classical music, perhaps even somewhat ahead of its time (it might fit in with the neo-Romantic and minimalist camps today). However, although this music can be attractive in small doses, the lack of tempo or texture contrasts over long stretches of time - particularly the nearly 28-minute "Mirrors" - can be annoying if you're not in the right blissful mood. Mladen Gutesha and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra perform the string parts with what can only be described as commendable patience.

Richard Ginell, All-Music Guide

Of all the albums Jarrett had recorded with symphony orchestras ("LUMINESCENCE", "IN THE LIGHT")-this one is perhaps the most eloquent and prominent work. A great input by both Jan Garbarek on saxes and Charlie Haden on bass. 5 stars.

Keith Jarrett's lyrical best - The 70's gave us the ECM Record label which had it's own school of thought and sound. This timeless recording of a master improviser is at once a moving energetic lullaby and a mysterious meditation. It has been found in my friends music libraries for longer than I care to remember. Jarrett who can be heard vocalizing in the background of Koln Concert, has restrained that dervish here. This is the "go to" disc for travelling on long trips, homework, or love. My enthusiasm for this recording as a sincere listening experience is real. Fans of Brian Eno and John Hassel will find respite here. There is an ambient thing going on in the decay of the keyboards into the sound of the studio. Dig it.
