Jan Garbarek is best known as a saxophonist, originator of a distinctive instrumental sound associated with the German ECM label, for whom he has played on dozens of solo and group projects. Ms. Gamas is a Norwegian singer who specializes in folk material. These popular songs, myths and legends have been given a completely contemporary treatment by Garbarek with synthesizers, hand drums, and a great variety of wind instruments. The result is an unforgettable record that is neither folk, ethnic, jazz, new age, or space music, but is simply an original and highly effective work of art.

This 1988 recording may be Garbarek's most extended foray into the early music of his native Norway, crafting spacious settings for the voice of Agnes Buen Garnas, a Norwegian traditional singer who brings a rich drama to these songs based on medieval origins. Her voice is a stunning instrument, possessed of a thrilling vibrato and a subtle sense of pitch that are only enhanced by the electronic climate of the recording. Though there are traces of his usual reeds, Garbarek uses synthesizers and a host of percussion overdubs to create a virtual orchestra with wind, string, and harmonium textures. It doesn't sound like mere mimicry of medieval music, but a heightened setting for the drama of Garnas's voice, from the undercurrent of soprano saxophone on "Signe Lita" to the anvil-like percussion of "Lillebroer." The 16-minute "Marjit" possesses both epic grandeur and hypnotic power with its pulsing, tablalike drumming, deep drones, and endlessly repeating melody. While it's a kind of precursor to Garbarek's later project with the Hilliard Ensemble, Rosenfole has a distinctive beauty all its own, and a stunning presence in Garnas's voice.

Des Saxophon-Magiers Offenheit und Experimentierfreudigkeit war sicher ein Grund für die Zusage zu diesem eigenwilligen Projekt. Und in der Tat: Wie Garbarek den Dudelsack-Bordun vergangener Tage mit synthetischen Mitteln ins 20.Jahrhundert hievt, wie er das Handwerk der trommelnden Landsknechte mit synthetischer Drumverstärkung erledigt, erhalten diese altnorwegischen Ge- sänge ihre moderne, nicht weniger bedrohliche Dimension. Bei soviel Moder- nität ohne Modernismen sorgen Agnes Buen Garnas' Stimmkünste zwischen balla- desker Erzählkunst ("Margjit Og Targjei Risvollo") und leidenschaftlich in- szeniertem Viehtrieb vor grandioser Naturkulisse für die nötige Ruhe. Die muß auch der Hörer mitbringen, will er mit den Künstlern Zeiten und bis nach Afrika und Asien geöffnete Räume überspringen und jeder klanglichen Nuancie- rung gewahr werden. Schade, daß die fehlenden Texte den sprachlichen Zugang zu dieser sagenhaften Mittelalter-Expedition versperren. ** Klang.: 08-09
