Beck's devoted following regards 1985's FLASH as one of his more controversial releases. Instead of issuing another expected guitar-heavy work, Beck sought out innovative dance producer Nile Rodgers to oversee the majority of the albums' tracks and lend an electronic, ultra-'80s sound throughout (best heard on the album-opening "Ambitious"). But FLASH does contain one of Beck's best-known tracks, a hit cover of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready," featuring soaring Beck's soaring blues licks and soulful vocals from old buddy and ex-bandmate Rod Stewart.



Produced by Nile Rodgers and Arthur Baker, Flash is Jeff Beck's surprisingly successful stab at a pop album, featuring a fine performance with Rod Stewart on "People Get Ready."

The long-awaited vinyl return of rock guitar legend Jeff Beck is an uptempo collection of songs sure to please a variety of formats. The emphasis here is on vocals rather than instrumentals, a departure from earlier Beck LPs such as Wired. Curtis Mayfield's classic "People Get Ready" is a charming cover featuring Rod Stewart's nicely understated and bluesy vocals. Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie) handles the majority of the vocals, and belts out the catchy Nile Rodgers tune "Stop, Look And Listen," while Beck adeptly sings another Rodgers gem "Get Workin'." Beck's guitar playing is as fluid and melodic as ever-ably demonstrated on "Ambitious" and "Gets Us All In The End." Rodgers and Arthur Baker aided Beck in the production of the album, and fortunately, neither meddled with Beck's style. A winner!
