Acoustic rock hardly comes better than that created by South African band, Watershed - and the release of the group's second album, 'Wrapped In Stone', is confirmation of its standing as the premier act in its genre in South Africa and Watershed's ability to stand alongside the world's best bands.

Under the guiding hand of acclaimed South African producer, Brian O'Shea, 'Wrapped In Stone' is a tour de force: a masterful drawing together of superb songwriting, impeccable musicianship and a production aesthetic that is globally focused and yet just right for the kind of material that Watershed is now famous for.

At the forefront of this heady musical brew is Craig W. Hinds (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, piano) - whose gift for crafting a song is in full evidence on 'Wrapped In Stone'.

From the gently intoxicating album opener (and sure-fire radio hit) "Lovely Day" to the hauntingly evocative, string-drenched "Light of The Moon" (undoubtedly one of 'Wrapped In Stone''s standout tracks), the piano-led and utterly gorgeous ballad "Closing Down", to "Hurricane" (surely one of the most exquisitely penned love songs we've heard in a while) here is an album that speaks of an international talent that is as accessible to someone living in Berlin as in Cape Town.

Musically, 'Wrapped In Stone' makes its way through a compellingly diverse landscape. In abundance are the acoustic rock ballads that Watershed has made their signature sound in many ways, but the album also offers up enough surprises to keep anyone listening to 'Wrapped In Stone' end-to-end, without once being tempted to reach for the "skip" button. One of these is "So Far", produced with an ear for the slightly upbeat, as well as "Don't Go Changing" (with its ever so subtle Americana tinge), the sparely produced "All I Could Offer", the soaring and relentlessly rocking "Fine Time To Leave" and the lovely old-fashioned organ sounds of "Today".

Assisting Hinds in creating Watershed's musical brilliance (all instrumentation is live) are band members Tulsa Pittaway (drums) and Vernon Hodgetts (bass guitar) - both of whom display an uncanny ability to let Hinds' songs shine through. Contributions on this album also come from Melanie Lowe (a finalist in South Africa's Pop Idols talent search) who performed backing vocals on 'Refuse to Move', a live brass section and a 14-piece string section. "It was a highlight of my career so far seeing those musicians reading and playing the songs I had written, on cellos, violins and more," says Hinds.

Lyrically, 'Wrapped In Stone' stands way above most other releases in its genres. Hinds' ability lies not just in crafting perfect melodies - ballads that remain in your head always - but also in his ability to pen lyrics that are both intimate and personal and speak of universal themes that anyone who has ever had the slightest brush with love and all its joys and heartaches will instantly identify with.

Thankfully for Watershed fans throughout South Africa and Europe, Hinds is a prolific songwriter. "I write songs all the time. There are a handful of songs on 'Wrapped In Stone' that I had, in fact, already written by the time we recorded 'In The Meantime' - "Come Home With Me", and "Don't Go Changing". It was great because we were able to play those live over the past two years and so what you hear on the new album is what has been refined on the road.

"I am very happy with the album now, I think it's great - very well balanced and a solid album in the true sense of the word. But to be honest there were a whole load of additional songs that we could have included. The process of getting 30 songs down to the ones that landed up on the album was not easy. I believe that you can never force yourself to go and write. If I did, it would be complete panic stations. But the songs come very naturally for me and I think you can hear that on the album."

'Wrapped In Stone' is awash in potential singles - something Hinds finds very gratifying. "It's great to know that there are songs that can sustain the album, by ensuring radio play over a long period of time." Songs that have "radio single" written all over them included "Lovely Day", "Closing Down", "So Far" and "Light Of The Moon".

The production on 'Wrapped In Stone' is brilliant - and Hinds says he's grateful to O'Shea (who produced 'In The Meantime') for giving such attention to the album which the group began recording mid-January 2003. "When I recorded 'In The Meantime', I had never set foot in a studio in my life and Brian persevered and was very patient with me. So the foundation was there and Brian was very excited about the new album, which is something that I liked. I think he has done a fantastic job."

Indeed - the whole of 'Wrapped In Stone' is fantastic and is destined to mark yet another stepping stone in Watershed's brilliant career so far, following in the footsteps of and building on the success of In The Meantime.

'In The Meantime' has been a real success story for Watershed. It has reached Gold status in the group's home country (25 000 units) and is headed towards platinum traditionally an elusive target for any group working in the rock and pop genres in South Africa. Sales of 'In The Meantime' are currently exceeding 45000 units. The album was propelled by the success of the radio singles such as "Indigo Girl", and "Shine On Me" - which have earned (and still enjoy) extremely high rotation on several of South Africa's top radio stations. 'In The Meantime' was nominated for two South African Music Awards: Best Pop Album (2000) and Best Adult Contemporary Album (2000), reaffirming them as an established musical force within the industry. Watershed were voted SA's Hottest Band by People Magazine for two years running and also successfully supported The Cranberries in Johannesburg and Cape Town on the South African leg of their World tour. Watershed has also been seen at major festivals, such as Splashy Fen, where they shared the stage with Irish supergroup, The Hothouse Flowers, and other festivals such as The Easter Rock Festival and Woodstock, frequently attracting close to 10 000 fans at gigs.

Watershed's international story has also been one of growing success. "Indigo Girl" was originally playlisted on the German station, SWR3 - picked up by a DJ on the station who happened to hear the track while holidaying in South Africa. After that, the momentum started and soon EMI Germany began working on Watershed in 2002. Since then, a repackaged version of 'In The Meantime' was released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, along with "Indigo Girl" which was released in several territories as a stand-alone single. The single sold very well, earning a position in Germany's Top 10 which enabled the band to get into a Nightliner touring bus and hit the road for three weeks, revisiting the grassroots touring strategy that has worked so well for Watershed in South Africa. (Indeed, Hinds attributes a great deal of 'In The Meantime''s sales success in SA to the group's dedicated touring throughout most of 2001.) Subsequently the 'In The Meantime' album was released in the European territories where it has enjoyed a measure of success. Watershed now have a German manager, Lothar Meinerzhagen, and 'Wrapped In Stone' is set to be supported by even more intensive touring of South Africa, Germany and other European territories during 2003.

LOVELY DAY

I looked up at the house on the hill,
There was a woman and a girl,
Or the same person
So it seems…

I looked up at the girl, standing there,
She beckoned me to come
With an elegant hand…

I don’t know why it’s a lovely day,
It’s getting me down, and it’s working my mind over
I don’t know why it’s a lovely day,
It’s pulling me in, it’s getting me down

I walked up to the girl, standing there
She smiled a peaceful smile, and took me
By the hand and led me inside her world,
I looked around, there’s nothing I could
See in the future for me… and so

I don’t know why it’s a lovely day,
Who’s fooling who and who’s pulling the wool over
I don’t know why it’s a lovely day
Show me the reasons and I’ll change my mind…

It’s coming to the point where I can say,
I will get along fine without you in my head…

I don’t know why it’s a lovely day,
It’s getting me down, and it’s working my mind over
I don’t know why it’s a lovely day,
It’s pulling me in, it’s getting me down

I don’t know why it’s a lovely day,
Who’s fooling who and who’s pulling the wool over
I don’t know why it’s a lovely day
Show me the reasons and I’ll change my mind…

CRAZY

It’s bitter cold outside, she’s wrapped in blankets,
Wrapped in stone, wrapping herself around herself.
She’s playing pretty hard to get,
I’m outside, I'm thinking about the weather…

Suddenly, I think about, all the things we’ve done
Together and all the things we’ve done alone, and
So I step inside, she’s lying naked on the floor
Her eyes are wild she says to me please, please go home…

Where it’s warm, where everything you do is fine
and nothing I say can harm your soul,
but don’t deny the fact that I think about you all the time…
I really do. I really do want to hold you…

I’m lying to myself, if I think that everyone is human,
I don’t believe, I don’t believe in ignorance, so I step inside
And I let fly and I tell her what’s on my mind…

I’m crazy for hanging on and holding on and believing
In the things I’d never have, dreamed of, but now that
You’re so close to me it doesn’t make it easy,
I want to hold you, so cut the crap and lead me home,
And cut the smile behind the frown,
oh, I’m crazy, but I need to hear it all from you…

Need to know what's on my mind
I’m crazy for hanging on and holding on and believing
In the things I’d never have, dreamed of, but now that
You’re so close to me it doesn’t make it easy,
I want to hold you, so cut the crap and lead me home,
And cut the smile behind the frown,
oh, I’m crazy, but I need to hear it all from you…

There’s a signpost, on the backdoor, and it says “come inside, come inside”,
A signpost, on her bedroom door, and it says “come inside, come inside”,
A signpost, on her soul…

LIGHT OF THE MOON

The skin the river sand, the tear the river
Flowing over and over...
The dream has died and piece of mind is
Looking for a shoulder, to hold her...

All that I want to do, is spend some time
Without imaginations running rodeo in my mind,
It's all that I want to do...
It's all that I want to do...

The hand is waving while the heart is crying
And there's no one to hold on...
The mind is wondering how did I go so
Wrong, and you turn around and walk away...

All that I want to do, is spend some time
Without imaginations running rodeo in my mind...

(Chorus)
'Cos I've been around the town, and I've held
My breath for just too long and I held
Her when she died. So I looked up at
The sky and I stared into the light of the moon...
I stared into the light of the moon...

'Cos all that I want to do, is spend some time
With no one telling me what to do, I need to focus...

And all that I want to do, is spend some time
Without imaginations running rodeo in my mind...

'Cos I've been around the town, and I've held
My breath for just too long and I held
Her when she died. So I looked up at
The sky and I wiped away the rain, and I opened up the clouds
and I stared into the light of the moon...
I stared into the light of the moon...

I dreamed a dream the other night, was
Wondering where the dream is leading, and the people
On the other side are calling out to help it come true...

CLOSING DOWN

All the days are gone and my hope is drowning
In a pool of thirst for life, like a sea that
Hopes for land. And I'll be there for always, and
I'll be there to count my dreams for all my things
My love, don’t you walk away, don’t you
Walk away… from me.

The lights are going down, and all the children are
Playing on that grey merry-go-round, it’s
Making my mind close down, its making my
Mind close… down

And I might as well wait for all of my dreams,
They’re closing down, and all of the things that
Mean a lot to me…

If you feel the need to cry, call me over
And wake me up and tell me about your
Life, don’t be shy, I'll tell you all about mine,

And I might as well wait for all of my dreams,
They’re closing down, and all of the things that
Mean a lot to me…

All around the world, I see them all pretending,
Miming fame, it's time for me to say, I’m holding on,
I’m holding on, I’m holding on…

If you feel the need to cry, don't be shy,, don't be shy
I'll tell you all about mine

And I might as well wait for all of my dreams,
They’re closing down, and all of the things that
Mean a lot to me…

And I might as well wait for all of my dreams,
They’re closing down, and all of the things that
Mean a lot to me…

SO FAR

I find it all strange, she dominates, my dreams of things
that make me weak with envy, and tire me out so I can’t sleep
And all my life I’ve sacrificed, all the things that complete you
And complete dreams and complicate the inner me…

So far I’ve gotten by, so far I’m coping,
so far I hold my head up to the sky… and my estate…

(Chorus)
Natalie, won’t you give me, what you couldn’t share
With all the folks around
I’ll find a better way to memorise your mind...
To memorise your mind... mind

How many times I felt that I should lose my nerve and break on out,
And become loud, and stroll around
with signs that say that I have left the world behind
And I am flying, so far it’s been an uphill climb to my estate…

Come home with me, won’t you give me just a little taste
of life with you around,
I’ll find a better way for you and me to love

(Chorus)

Just the thought that I’m supposed to be alone
Makes it a difficult way to grow, but now that I believe
in destiny and hopes and dreams and time for tea,
and honesty, I want to be, all the things that I seem,
mistakes don’t come to me that easily…

Won’t you give me, what you couldn’t share
With all the folks around
I’ll find a better way for you and me to love…

Natalie, won’t you give me just a little taste
of life with you around,
I’ll find a better way to memorise your mind...
To memorise your mind... mind

HURRICANE

Don’t look too hard ‘cos you will find me.
I think you know, you know me well.
You always do so many things, so many things to me.
I think you know me well…

It took awhile for me to realise.
You were the best thing in my life.
'Cos all the time I wasted on, wondering about,
My brown haired girl, with her crazy mind,
My brown haired girl, with a life so live…

Don’t forget about the hurricanes that started off our lives.
They were the ones, the ones that taught us how to lie.
Sometimes I drive alone and my mind’s racing too,
Catch up with you, to be with you,
Oh I wanna catch up with you, to be…

(Chorus)
You always do the best, I might as well confess,
You always shine on me, just like you did today.
I might as well, I might as well, I might as well just say,
I think you know me well…

It’s been awhile but now I’m holding on,
And there areso many things you do to make me strong.
It’s six o’clock and the sun is up, and it’s almost
Time to leave
I take you with me, to be with me
I take you with me, to be...

(Chorus)

HOW WAS I TO KNOW

I just want to spend some time without you
For a while, I think about our times alone
And all the things I found. Everyone around
Me now is falling over too,
Coming, going as they like without consulting you…

(Chorus)
How was I to know the reasons why,
I don’t know
Falling end over end and wasting self…
Dignity…

When will I find out about it, who invited who.
Walking to the front door, but not expecting you.
Permanent smiles echoing between the two of you.
Shaking hands and making plans
There’s nothing else to do…

How was I to know the reasons why,
I don’t know
Falling end over end and wasting self…
Sincerity…

It’s a pretty game people play, it’s breathing down
My spine, it’s wasting my time.
Games people play, it’s getting under my skin so
Who am I within? …
It’s getting me down …
It’s getting me down …

In the morning when I call my friends to
Say thank you. They say to me you’re going mad
It’s been long since I’ve seen you.
I hang up and I look around, I see faces
I don’t know. Empty dreams and empty
Minds all lined up in a row…

How was I to know the reasons why,
I don’t know
Falling end over end and wasting self…
Sincerity…
Oh, iIt's all I need...

Please help me on my way, it’s all I need,
Oh, iIt’s a simple piece of understanding, a simple piece
Of mind, time is closing down, so pack your bags
And go astray, but who am I to tell you…
I need to tell you...
But it’s getting me down …
It’s getting me down …

DON’T GO CHANGING

I don’t know why I drown in your tears,
I don’t know why I bleed
I don’t know why you took it from me,
What gave you that right to steal…

(Chorus)
So don’t go changing, things about me,
Things that you think will do me well,
Don’t go changing, whatever you need,
Whatever you want me to be…

I don’t know why you laid me down, led me on
And I don’t know why I was weak…
I don’t know why it never, never occurred to me,
I don’t know what I think…

So don’t go changing things about me,
Things that you think will do me well,
Don’t go changing, whatever you need,
Whatever you want me to be…

Oh and when, when will she notice me again,
Oh and when I see her sitting next to him,
Oh I know, I know it’s happening again…
I feel sad for him, oh I feel sad for him…

I don’t know what to do when I’m alone,
And I don’t know which way to go…
If she comes to me and she says please, please,
I think that I will, I think that I will,
I think that I will, I think that I will…

(3x Chorus)

ALL I COULD OFFER

It was a day for resting
It was a day for listening
It was a day for dreaming
It was a day for sleeping…
Then one day, she came to me, we sat alone,
Just her and me.
She looked around, she looked for comfort,
And all I could offer was me…

And I’ll find my way on my terms, on my terms, my terms
If you show me that you need me, it’ll be on my terms
On my terms, on my terms, my terms...

It was a time for thinking
It was a time for wondering
It was a time for hoping
Oh I guess it was a time for talking.
We spoke awhile, about her and me,
We mentioned things, that we want to be.
I think we found it, our lives touched it,
I carried her away with me…
Oh I carried her away with me…

And I’ll find my way on my terms, on my terms, my terms
If you show me that you need me, it’ll be on my terms,
on my terms, my terms
If you decide to leave it’ll be on my terms, on my terms,
My terms, my terms,
it’ll be on my terms…

FINE TIME TO LEAVE

It’s a fine, fine time to leave, holding on
It’s a fine, fine time to leave, hanging on

Why did I ever notice you,
Why did I ever fall for you

It’s a fine, fine time to leave
It’s a fine, fine time to leave
It’s a fine, fine, fine, fine, fine
fine, fine, fine, fine, fine time to leave

Why did I ever notice you, notice you
Why did I ever fall for you, fall for you
But now I’ve come to realise all the things
You said were true
But now that I know…

It’s a fine, fine time to leave, holding on
It’s a fine, fine time to leave, hanging on

And now I know that I can’t wait too long…
And now I know that I can’t wait too long…

REFUSE TO MOVE

I’m supposed to leave you but all you do is call me
When I go, I think about the good times, the things we do for love…
It’s four to five on the bedside light, it’s summer so it’s light outside,
But I refuse to move, refuse to sleep, refuse to admit that you’re not for me…

You might believe that all I do is wrong, I need you baby,
You’re always there for me…
The summer's gone and the autumn's come but still I lie alone,
But I refuse to move, refuse to sleep, refuse to admit that you’re not for me…

(Chorus)
It’s funny how you view the world,
It’s all about the right to know,
It’s funny how the seasons don’t quite explain the reasons why they change…

It’s about time to go now so I won’t hang around.
There’s someone upstairs shouting out or could it be a song…?
I try to walk out through the door, ‘cos I’ve got things to do…
But I refuse to move, refuse to sleep, refuse to admit that you’re not for me…

(Chorus)

TODAY

It’s another day and all I want to do
Is lie in bed alone with you, for a little
While, oh just let me stay, ‘cos out here
It feels cold today…

So I venture out or do I venture in,
Into a complex situation, of many things,
The things I don’t know well, so I’ll hide
My inspiration…

(Chorus)
Today, I’m gonna stay, I’m gonna be out there
Finding little things that make me want to stay,
Today I’m gonna know, I’m gonna know where
I stand and where I am and all the things
That make a man…

So I wander out or do I wander in, into
A world that never listens, and it’s a shame
That I, that I'll never know why, I
Understand my contemplation…

(Chorus)

But now I’ve come to the realisation that I
I Never did anything against the grain, but
Now I know that they will see me fly…away

(Chorus)

COME HOME WITH ME

Come home with me,
because I need you now,
Like I needed you then
When we were friends,
Oh girl, come dance with me, and be my lady
Come drive with me, down the empty streets,
We’ll joke and talk, I’ll find a place,
I’ll lay you down, amongst the heather,
I’ll kiss your mouth…

When we’re alone, romance, it tastes so sweet,
You look so good, come hold me now,
From the inside out, I’ll hold your heart…

(Chorus)
'Cos all I can say is come home with me, come home with me,
Come home with me, come home with me,
Come home with me…

If you leave me now, I’m going to go home again
All alone, I’ll light a fire, I’ll watch you in the glow,
The fire’s for you, it’s for you…

(Chorus)

I once knew, you would always be there,
But now that I know what’s on the way, and
I do, believe it’s true and so tell me now
To stay…

I’ll lay you down, amongst the heather,
I’ll kiss your mouth…

But all I can say is come home with me, come home with me,
Come home with me, come home with me,
Come home with me…
But nothing else, nothing else...

And all I can say is come home with me, come home with me,
Come home with me, come home with me,
Come home with me…

LONELY

And I want you back
And I need you back
And I want you back
‘Cos I’m lonely now…
I’m lonely now…
I’m lonely now…
I’m lonely now…
I’m lonely now…
