This unique compilation project brings together the legendary musicians of the Buena Vista Social Club & some of today's most popular music stars Chris Martin (Coldplay), Dido, Franz Ferdinand, Sting, Bono, Radiohead among others, performing collaborations of some of their classic hits.

Rhythms Del Mundo is an electrifying album that fuses music of different cultures and comes up with a melting pot of rare sounds. While the majority of the original artists' vocals remain the same, The Buena Vista Social Club musicians took the original orchestration from each song and created something utterly unique, casting their trademark mastery over each track. Their noted and exceptional musicianship seduced even the notoriously protective Arctic Monkeys into handing over their track. As well as The Arctic Monkeys' track `Dancing Shoes', Rhythms Del Mundo included reworked tracks such as `Clocks' by Coldplay, `Better Together' by Jack Johnson, `She Will be Loved' by Maroon 5, `High and Dry by Radiohead' and others. The album is in aid of Artists Project Earth (APE), which lends support for natural disaster relief and climate change awareness.



Turning the covers album concept on its head, Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba doesn't set a varied group of northern artists loose on the music made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club, but instead sets the Club's members lose on the northerners' own songs. Now that's an inspired idea, and all to aid charities assisting the victims of natural disasters and raising awareness of climate change. However, to call this a covers album is a bit misleading, as most of the songs feature the original vocals, and occasionally some of the original instrumentation, but it's not a remix project either, as the Social Club add their own music to the original recordings. So, it's a grand fusion of Cuban and northern sounds. And eclectic to boot, with songs contributed by such international artists as Quincy Jones, Sting and U2, as well as the likes of Radiohead and Coldplay. But to give the set a real frisson, the Social Club also took on such younger, feted artists as Franz Ferdinand, Maroon 5, the Kaiser Chiefs, and the so hot they're actually sizzling Arctic Monkeys. Reaching back into the past, Ibrahim Ferrer and the Club also deliver up a lush cover of "As Time Goes By," Omara Portunondo joins Ferrer for an equally lavish "Casablanca," and in another (and one of her final recordings) the late singer offers up a heartrending "Killing Me Softly." These numbers give the set its timeless quality; the rest its up-to-date feel. Not every song works perfectly, Jack Johnson's vocals are a bit uncomfortable rhythmically on his version, but Coldplay's is superb, the Arctic Monkeys are absolutely lethal, U2's track is stunning, and Dido and Faithless' is sublime. The Club brings out the sweetness and glow of Maroon 5's song, give the Kaiser Chiefs a wonderful Latin kick, totally reinvent Radiohead, then give Quincy Jones a lesson in authentic Spanish music, while trotting out their own soul credentials. Of course the musicianship is flawless, the arrangements inspired, and this mix of north and south proves that the music is not just simpatico, it was surely made for creative melding.

Created as a benefit project for Artists' Project Earth, an organization devoted to protecting the environment, reversing climate change, and tendering disaster relief, this compilation pairs Western pop stars (U2, Sting, Artic Monkeys, et al) and their hits with all-new arrangements performed by members of Cuba’s Buena Vista Social Club plus other Havana-based talent. The overall effect is of a well-meaning but not entirely simpatico mutual admiration society. Coldplay's "Clocks" is a good example; the lead vocal is coolly lethargic, engulfing the spiky crags of the rhythm section like syrup on a waffle. But then, most of the singers sound strangely unconnected to the frisky 1-2-3/1-2 of the clavé beat. The contrast between the two groups of players could have been bracing, and to many ears it perhaps will be, but most of the time, they seem to transmitting from parallel universes. Not surprisingly, the best tracks are those in which hometown icons are left to do what they do best. But the late, great Ibrahim Ferrer's marvelous interpretation of "As Time Goes By" (his final recording) and Omara Portuondo's wistful yet powerful cover of "Killing Me Softly" only serve to further showcase what’s amiss with the rest of the album.

Gäbe es an dieser Stelle eine Platte des Monats, "Rhythms del Mundo" hätte diesen Titel unangefochten verdient. Schließlich ist die Version von "Dancing Shoes", die die Arctic Monkeys mit Musikern des Buena Vista Social Clubs aufgenommen haben, besser als ihr komplettes hochgehyptes Debütalbum - und das spricht hier wohlgemerkt nicht gegen das Debütalbum. Omara Portuondos Version von "Killing me softly" ist zum Sterben schön, selbst die schwächsten Stücke des Benefizalbums sind noch guter Durchschnitt. Und wenn jemand es schafft, Coldplays "Clocks" in einen Latingroove zu verwandeln und mit den Kaiser Chiefs klarmacht, dass der "Modern Way" auf jeden Fall der südamerikanische ist, sei ihm einiges verziehen. Sogar, dass wie bei jedem Charity-Projekt die unvermeidlichen U2 mitwirken, Jack Johnson einfach nur wie Jack Johnson klingt und bei "High and dry" die Radiohead-Samples nur mit viel gutem Willen rauszuhören sind.

Selten hat es ein derartig spektakuläres Musikprojekt gegeben, das so überzeugend daherkommt. Nach über einem Jahr des Experimentierens und Arbeitens in Havannas Abdala Studios haben die kubanischen Musiker des Buena Vista Social Clubs ihre Zusammenarbeit mit den momentan erfolgreichsten internationalen Künstlern abgeschlossen. Das Ergebnis nennt sich «Rhythms Del Mundo Cuba» und präsentiert Hits wie «Clocks» von Coldplay, «I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For» von U2 oder«The Dark of the Matinee» von Franz Ferdinand - im Stil des kubanischen Musikkollektivs produziert, aber von den Originalinterpreten eingesungen. Den Produzenten ist es sogar gelungen, die in dieser Hinsicht ansonsten sehr zurückhaltenden Arctic Monkeys für «Rhythms Del Mundo Cuba» zu gewinnen. Neu arrangiert von Demitrio Muniz, haben die Kubaner den Songs ihrer Kollegen aus dem Westen neuen Glanz im Son-Sound eingehaucht. Nachdem Ibrahim Ferrer, die Stimme des Social Club-Projekts, vor gut einem Jahr gestorben ist, haben Lateinamerikas große Sängerin Omara Portuonda, einzige Frau im Club, und die All Stars Barbarito Torres, Amandito Valdes, Virgilio Valdes, Angel Terri Domech, Manuel `Guajiro' Mirabal, Orlando Lopez `Cachaito' sowie Demetrio Muniz ihr gemeinsames Werk fortgesetzt. Ferrer gedenken sie auf «Rhythms Del Mundo» mit der Veröffentlichung von dessen letzter Gesangsaufnahme. Der Buena Vista Social Club hat sich seit Ende der 1990er Jahre mit Hilfe von Ry Cooder (Musikproduktion) und Wim Wenders (Dokumentation) einen Namen gemacht als Wahrer traditionell-zeitloser Son-Rhythmen. Mit «Rhythms Del Mundo» unterstützen alle am Projekt beteiligten Künstler sowie Universal Music die britische Organisation APE (Artists Project Earth) in ihrer «Stop Global Warming»-Kampagne. APE ist ein Zusammenschluss von Wissenschaftlern, Künstlern, Journalisten und Filmemachern und hat sich voll und ganz dem Umweltschutz verschrieben. Gegenwärtig tritt APE zuvorderst für Opferhilfe bei Naturkatastrophen ein und bemüht sich zudem, neues Bewusstsein für die Gefahren von Klimawandel und globaler Erderwärmung zu schüren. «Wenn wir jetzt nicht handeln, werden unsere Enkel uns auf ewig verfluchen», sagt der Songwriter, Produzent und APE-Gründungsvater Kenny Young und verweist auf den Tsunami im Indischen Ozean zu Weihnachten 2004, verheerende Erdbeben in Asien und den Hurrikan Katrina (August 2005).
