Featured in this compilation are eleven exponents of the Boogie Woogie solo piano, including early pioneers like 'Pine Top' Smith and 'Cow Cow' Davenport, and the trinity of Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and Meade Lux Lewis, who in the 1930's became the most commercial face of the style and recorded together as a trio and in various duet combinations. Two versions of "Yancey Special" appear here, one by Jimmy Yancey, and other by Meade Lux Lewis; paradoxically, Lewis recorded his version in homage to Yancey during 1936. Like Jazz, Boogie Woogie did not remain the exclusive property of Black musicians for long and White musicians soon proved themselves proficient in the genre. Represented here is Art Hodes, Russian-born but American by upbringing, and better known as a traditionally-slanted Jazz pianist.
