Señor Blues is one of Taj Mahal's best latter-day albums, a rollicking journey through classic blues styles performed with contemporary energy and flair. There's everything from country-blues to jazzy uptown blues on Señor Blues, and Taj hits all of areas in between, including R&B and soul. Stylistically, it's similar to most of his albums, but he's rarely been as effortlessly fun and infectious as he is here.

Thom Owens - All Music Guide

F. Schöler in Stereo 8/97

For me, the real highlight of the Rolling Stones' Rock And Roll Circus video was seeing Taj Mahal in his badass Mexican pimp outfit, squeezing out Otis-style soul and whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Twenty-something years later he's still more or less up to the same stuff (in fact, at a recent performance, he still had a bunch of young English kids in his band). "Having A Real Bad Day" is a nice loping slow-boogie. Taj also does a dead-on vocal impersonation of Otis Redding's "Mr. Pitiful," which makes us yearn for a live album's worth of stuff from his pre-blues soul phase in the late `60s. Sometimes one wishes the band could be a little more sprightly (there's no substitute for Jesse Ed Davis on guitar), but Taj's vocals are as strong and tough as you'd want.
