Taj Mahal has always been a more inclusive, eclectic musician than even some admirers understand; his work was never simply or totally blues, even though that strain was at the center and seldom far from anything he performed either. That's the case with this newest collection, a 12-song set that includes splendid covers of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf tunes, but also equally respectful, striking renditions of soul standards such as "Mockingbird," with special guest Etta James, and "That's How Strong My Love Is." There are also strong Mahal originals like "Blues Ain't Nothin'" and "Strut," with Mahal singing and playing in his wry, delicate, yet forceful way.

Ron Wynn - All Music Guide

For over 20 years, Taj Mahal has been the preeminent reinterpreter of the blues, combining a wellspring of influences (ragtime, blues, gospel, field hollers and urban sounds) to present an overview of the blues tradition. What's remarkable is that this late in his career, after many others of his ilk and era have faded or lost their touch, he's still turning out the same level of quality work as ever. Interestingly, Taj seems to be continuing the exploratory/musicological traditions of his classic `70s LPs, but broadening his focus to include many streams of black music (you could probably run quite far with the argument that Taj's own development represents a parallel reflection of the musical history of this country). "Goin' To The River" essays the `50s R & B of Guitar Slim and Buddy Guy, while "Mockingbird" offers a Taj take on the great tradition of Stax Memphis soul duets, with guest vocalist Etta James playing Carla Thomas to Taj's Otis Redding. With guest performances from Ian McLagan as well as Bill Payne and Richie Hayward of Little Feat, Dancing The Blues is nothing less than a classic, free-spirited roots album. Taj Mahal was doing this sort of thin g years before anybody had even thought of recycling the past into new shapes and forms, which puts him in the unique position of being both pleasantly behind the times, and still way ahead of them.

Vor Spielfreude sprüht auch Taj Mahal, Hansdampf in allen Blues-Gassen. Vom Folksong Freight Train über Cajun - orientierte Eigenkompositionen bis zu Good Morning Little Schoolgirl reicht sein stets etwas schnoddrig dargebrachtes Repertoire.
