Old-school R&B legend Taj Mahal has been making quality roots music since the mid-'60s. As evidenced by this 1999 compilation, he has been going full-force ever since. Culled from several albums throughout the '90s, BLUE LIGHT BOOGIE ranges from wall-of-sound large-ensemble performances ("River of Love" and ""Don't Call Us") to stripped-down arrangements (such as his solo cover of the Stones' "Honky Tonk Women"). The disc is packed with guest stars, including James Brown, Hiram Bullock, Hall and Oates, Sheryl Crow, Paul Shaffer, and Steven Seagal(!). While purists may recoil at the slick production values and the presence of synthesizers - not to mention the "presence" of Seagal! - Taj Mahal's style is as gutsy and down-home as ever. A gospel-cast Son House cover, "John The Revelator," attests to this. Unquestionably, the highlight of the record is Mahal's self-penned "Big Legged Mommas Are Back In Style," a minimally arranged shuffle-beat that rocks like nobody's business. If only on the basis of this song, BLUE LIGHT BOOGIE proves the man still has "it" and is definitely worth a listen.

"Neben einem halben Dutzend Aufnahmen aus seinen beiden besseren CDs für Private Music versammelte man für dies Plättchen entlegene Raritäten."

F. Schöler in Rolling Stone 6/99
