The Best of Taj Mahal: The Private Years is a somewhat confusing release, since Blue Light Boogie - another compilation drawing from his 1990s recordings for the Private Music label - had appeared just a year before. This disc takes its 13 tracks primarily from Dancing the Blues, Phantom Blues, and Señor Blues, and - even more confusingly - skips completely over some of Mahal's other albums for the label. But even if the repackaging is puzzling, the music encompasses some of his best of the '90s, and makes an excellent companion to Blue Light Boogie for those who don't already own the original records.
