The Undertones' lead singer Feargal Sharkey struck many folks as a bit removed from the regular-guy vibe of the Irish punk band. It came as no surprise that his first solo outing in 1985 was a sophisticated set of slick dance-pop and big '80s balladry that was a far cry from the heart-on-the-sleeve punk-pop of his former band. Although the production sounds a little dated, the songs hold up well, as Sharkey applies his utterly unique warble to tracks by Maria McKee (the U.K. hit "A Good Heart"), Chrissie Hynde ("Made to Measure"), and even the Stones ("All Over Now").

The Irish singer's solo debut opens with a perfectly conceived and executed cover of Maria McKee's "A Good Heart" that deservedly shot to number one on the United Kingdom charts. You'd think the distinctive quavering voice was created to sing that one song. The former Undertones frontman has a shot at songwriting with producer David A. Stewart, but wisely borrows numbers by Chrissie Hynde, Benmont Tench, and the Womack brothers. Veteran Eurythmics producer and guitarist Stewart and arranger Michael Kamen provide a fitting R&B backdrop for the headliner, who would not reach these heights again.

One of punk's most unusual voices, Feargal Sharkey is now one of pop's most promising. As the vocalist for the Undertones, his high-pitched singing soared above the anarchy to make that group one of the new wave's most exciting and fun. Here Eurythmic Dave Stewart (who's had lots of practice with unusual voices) fashions a modern soul sound, with horns and propulsive drumming supplying the high energy base and, of course, synths used for spice in the right spots. Top cuts: "A Good Heart" (written by Lone Justice's Maria Mckee), "You Little Thief," "Love And Hate," "Someone To Somebody," "Don't Leave It To Nature."

His high, quavering delivery helped give the New Wave band the Undertones their identity, beginning with the 1978 EP recording debut Teenage Kicks. While with the Northern Irish band, Sharkey sang about teenage angst as the band played spirited punky pop. After the group disbanded in 1983, brothers Sean O'Neill and Damian O'Neill formed That Petrol Emotion while Sharkey went solo.A singer with an instantly recognizable voice, he broke through to a wider audience with an inspired cover of Maria McKee's "A Good Heart" from his solo debut, reaching the top of the U.K. charts. Helped greatly by producer Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics and arranger Michael Kamen on his solo debut, Sharkey never reached those heights again. He sang on the 1983 EP Never Never by the Assembly, a short-lived band formed by former Yaz member Vince Clarke. Sharkey released Wish in 1988, but his recording career was essentially done.
