Lovers Rock, the title of Sade's first album of the 21st century, could be taken on many levels. Never before has the singer infused more mainstream rock elements (prominent strummed guitars) into her music as evidenced by the first single, "By Your Side." That's not to say that she has eschewed her own tried-and-true brand of smoky, dusky ballads. The singer/songwriter is reunited with co-producer Mike Pela and musician/songwriters Andrew Hale, Stuart Matthewman, and Paul S. Denman; and Lovers Rock finds them all in fine form. "Somebody Already Broke My Heart," "Every Word," and "Lovers Rock" are vintage Sade.

Ed Hogan - All Music Guide

Sade's brand of elegant pop/R&B owned the charts in the '80s, making the Nigerian/British chanteuse one of those artists whose very name becomes the adjective to describe their sound. After an eight-year layoff, Sade and her core band (and longtime producer Mike Pela) are back with a CD that is both a stunning reaffirmation of her artistry and a solid soulful collection. Perhaps the best thing that can be said about Lovers Rock is that it picks up where Sade left off, which means you will hear no cool beats or hot hired hands or hip-hop cameos. This is Sade music, and on the first single, "By Your Side," she glides back into the spotlight on gentle, countryish, sparse wings--singing, once again, about love's power to redeem. Of course, Sade knows that love can stink: listen to the dub-riddim-tinged "Every Word" and cry tears of recognition. Decidedly female but utterly universal, grown up yet not hardened, Lovers Rock ranks as one of the best of the year, and marks the return of a true original.

Amy Linden - Amazon.com

The woman who can single-handedly take credit for the staggering population boom of the late '80s returns after nearly a decade of self-imposed quietude. Helen Folsade Adu, known simply as Sade, follows 1992's splendid Love Deluxe (which birthed the hit "No Ordinary Love") with an album that makes clear she is still as single-minded as ever. Saxophones may have given way to tasteful acoustic guitars, and the rhythms might nod to recent masterstrokes by Massive Attack and Everything but the Girl, but the tone and temperament on Lovers Rock remains resolutely the same, from the lush melancholy of "King of Sorrow" to the dub-inflected sensuality of the title track. While there is always a slight temptation to write off Sade's music as the equivalent of aural wallpaper - a watery offshoot of FM radio's universal waiting-room soundtrack, quiet storm - she delivers every word, every sentiment, and every pastel-colored soul-jazz melody with so much grace that one can't help but feel utterly seduced by the majesty of it all. Negligible lyrics come across as lost and lovelorn, like the sound of the singer's broken heart distilled into pure emotion. "You think I would leave you down / When you're down on your knees / I wouldn't do that," she invokes on the opening "By Your Side." It'll do you in every time.

With ease, Sade snags the same audience as artists like D'Angelo and Amel Larrieux. She might even be lumped into the neo-soul category, if she didn't predate its trendy emergence by at least a decade, and if her aura, mystery and legendary status didn't elevate her miles above everything typical about R&B. Sade's long-awaited fourth album, Lovers Rock, is based on the same formula that created classics like "Sweetest Taboo" and "Kiss Of Life": stripped-down, often reggae-tinged and bass heavy. Sade's plaintive, almost husky voice and reflective lyrics are, of course, the centerpiece. While Lovers Rock holds no real surprises, cuts like "All About Our Love" and the passionate "King Of Sorrow" are nicely augmented with endearingly imperfect acoustic guitar. With Lovers Rock, Sade fans have something to cling to for however many years it takes the reclusive singer to exhale again.

king of sorrow

i'm crying everyone's tears
and there inside our private war i died the night before
and all of these remnants
of joy and disaster
what am i supposed to do
i want to cook you a soup that warms your soul
but nothing would change nothing would change at all
it's just a day that brings
it all about
just another day
and nothing's any good

the dj's playing the
same song
i have so much to do
i have to carry on
i wonder if this grief will
ever let me go
i feel like
i am the king
of sorrow
the king of sorrow

i suppose i could just walk away
will i disappoint my future
if i stay
it's just a day that brings
it all about
just another day
and nothing's any good
the dj's playing the
same song
i have so much to do
i have to carry on
i wonder will this grief
ever be gone
will it ever go
i'm the king
of sorrow
the king of sorrow

i'm crying everyone's tears
i have already paid for all
my future sins
there's nothing anyone
can say to take this away
it's just another day
and nothing's any good

i'm the king
of sorrow
king of sorrow

somebody already broke my heart

you came along when i
needed a saviour
someone to pull me
through somehow
i've been torn apart so
many times
i've been hurt so many
times before
so i'm counting on you now

somebody already
broke my heart
somebody already
broke my heart

here i am
so don't leave me stranded
on the end of a line
hanging on the edge of a lie
i've been torn apart so
many times
i've been hurt so many
times before
so be careful and be kind

somebody already
broke my heart
if someone has to lose
i don't want to play
somebody already
broke my heart
no no i can't go there again

you came along when i
needed a saviour
someone to pull me
through somehow
i've been torn apart so
many times
i've been hurt so many
times before
so i'm counting on you now

somebody already
broke my heart
if someone has to lose
i don't want to play
somebody already
broke my heart
no no i can't go there again

all about our love

it’s all about our love
so shall it be forever
never ending

after all this time
after all is said and done

we have seen some
suffering baby
it has not always been perfect

after all this time
after all is said and done

darling we know it
whatever may come
we can get through it
as if it’s just begun
oh it’s just begun

it’s all about our love
so shall it be forever
never ending
darling we know it

after all this time
after all is said and done

after all this time
after all is said and done

slave song

i see them gathered see
them on the shore
i turned to look once more
and he who knows me not takes me to the belly
of darkness

the tears run swift and hard and when they fall
even the comfort of a stone would be a gain
there was a time
when i thought
i would have to give up
but i'm thankful that i'm
strong as i am and i'll try to do
the best i can

tears will run swift and tears will come that fall like rain
i pray that it's swift though tears will fall as cold as pain

i pray to the almighty
let me not to him do
as he has unto me
teach my beloved children
who have been enslaved
to reach for the light continually

so many times i prayed
so many times i've prayed
for you
prayed for you
the tears run swift and hard and cold as pain
even the comfort of a stone would be a gain
had i not the strength and wisdom of a warrior
i would have to give up
but i'm thankful that i'm
strong as i am
and i'll try to do the best i can

tears will run swift and tears will come that fall like rain
i pray that it's swift though tears will fall as cold as pain

i pray to the almighty
let us not do as he has unto us
teach my beloved children
i've been a slave
but reach for the
light continually

wisdom is the flame
wisdom is the brave warrior who will carry us into the sun
i pray that it's swift though tears will come that fall like rain

so many times so many times

the sweetest gift

quietly while you were asleep
the moon and i were talking
i asked that she'd always keep you protected
she promised you her light that you so gracefully carry
you bring your light and shine like morning
and then the wind pulls the clouds across the moon
your light fills the darkest room
and i can see the miracle that keeps us from falling
she promised
all the sweetest gifts
that only the heavens
could bestow
you bring your light and shine like morning
and as you so gracefully give her light as long as you live
i will always remember
this moment

every word

i saw a picture
how could you be so careless
how could you have done that
to us
and i write this letter
i send it all back to you
and every word you said

in there every word
oh oh
how could you have done that to us

you treated me like a stranger
and all the time i was loving you
all your slick moves they were once innocent moves
i wanted to look up to you
i really trusted you
and every word you said

in there every word
oh oh
how could you have done that to us

i was loving you like a child
all the time you were smiling the same smile
i was loving you like a child
i really trusted you

every word you said
every word you said
love is what the word was

every word you said
every word you said
all the time you were smiling
love is what the word was

every word you said
every word that you said
i was loving you like a child yeah
and all the time you were smiling the same smile
i was loving you like a child
i really trusted you

every word you said
every word that you said
i send it back to you yeah

every word you said
every word that you said
i send it all back to you yeah

every word you said
every word you said
i send it all back to you
back to you

immigrant

coming from where he did
he was turned away from
every door like joseph
to even the toughest among us
that would be too much
he didn't know what it was
to be black
'til they gave him his change but didn't want to touch
his hand
to even the toughest among us
that would be too much

isn't it just enough
how hard it is to live
isn't it hard enough
just to make it through a day

the secret of their fear
and their suspicion
standing there looking
like an angel
in his brown shoes
his short suit
his white shirt
and his cuffs a little frayed
coming from where he did
he was such a dignified child
to even the toughest among us
that would be too much

isn't it just enough
how hard it is to live
isn't it hard enough
just to make it through a day

coming from where he did
he was turned away from
every door like joseph
to even the toughest among us
that would be too much
he didn't know what it
was to be black
'til they gave him his change but didn't want to touch
his hand
to even the toughest among us
that would be too much

lovers rock

i am in the wilderness
you are in the music in the man's car next to me
somewhere in my sadness
i know i won't fall apart
completely

when i need to be rescued
and i need a place to swim
i have a rock to cling to
in the storm
when no-one can hear
me calling
i have you i can sing to

and in all this
and in all my life

you are the lovers rock
the rock that i cling to
you're the one
the one i swim to in a storm
like a lovers rock

i am in the wilderness
you are in the music in the man's car next to me
somewhere in my sadness
i know i won't fall apart
completely
and in all this
and in all my life

you are the lovers rock
the rock that i cling to
you're the one
the one i swim to in a storm
like a lovers rock

you are the lovers rock
the rock that i cling to
you're the one
the one i swim to in a storm
like a lovers rock

when i need to be rescued
you're there
when i need a place to swim to
in the storm
i think of you
and in all my life
and in all my life

you are the lovers rock
the rock that i cling to
you're the one
the one i swim to in a storm
like a lovers rock

it's only love that gets you through

girl you are rich
even with nothing
you know tenderness
comes from pain
it's amazing how you love
and love is kind
and love can give
and get no gain

it's down a rugged road
you've come
though you had every reason you didn't come undone
somehow you made it to
the other side
you didn't suffer in vain

you forgive those who have trespassed against you
and you know tenderness comes from pain
it's amazing how you love
and love is kind
and love can give
and love needs
no gain

it's down a rugged road
you've come
though you had every reason you didn't come undone
somehow you made it to
the other side
you didn't suffer in vain

you didn't suffer in vain
you know it's only love
that gets you through
only love love
only love that gets
you through
