Three years ago, the Rolling Stones released VOODOO LOUNGE, perhaps their best album since TATOO YOU, possibly SOME GIRLS, maybe even EXILE ON MAIN STREET. The lead single, "Love is Strong," had an infectious hook while the album was filled with other straight shootin' numbers like "You Got Me Rocking" and "Sparks Will Fly." Keith Richards delivered one of the best Stones tunes in years with "The Worst" (featuring some killer pedal steel by Ron Wood) while Mick Jagger's voice soared to new dimensions. The first Stones album without Bill Wyman even put the rather drool Charlie Watts in a good mood.

With VOODOO LOUNGE, the Stones re-affirmed their title as "The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band." Even after thirty years, the Stones proved once and for all they could still make a decent record. So with little time on their side, The Stones have returned three years later with another stab at longevity -- BRIDGES TO BABYLON.

Without the sharp focus of its predecessor, BRIDGES TO BABYLON still manages to kick up enough dust to warrant a listen or two. Whether or not the Stones are on a, so to speak, roll remains to be seen; however, one can rest easily knowing the band is at least putting a little more effort into their work than they were during the early 80's. Indeed, they've woken up to the fact that their days are numbered, and their every move will be scrutinized, analyzed, mostly criticized, and eventually mythologized.

The album's opener, "Flip The Switch" is delivered in the grand tradition of several Stones opener (e.g., "Brown Sugar" and "Start Me Up" come to mind). The track is a statement of what the Stones, in their mid fifties, are capable of. Too bad it is followed by the album's dismal first single, "Anybody Seen My Baby?" This is a definite step backwards. Even with the song's soothing bassline, pushing a single that salivates on k.d. lang melodies just doesn't seem very Stones-like. You'd have thought Jagger had learned his lesson with his reckless falsetto exercises on "Miss You" and "Emotional Rescue."

Fortunately, the album moves forward with some choice cuts. The slow, unremarkable groove of "Low Down" sustains the temperament, while "Already Over Me" flows like a suitable, superior second single. Jagger goes on to dip his wick in a the gospel-flavored "Saint of Me," which turns out to be far less sacrilegious than something like "Faraway Eyes." No matter how you slice it, you can't go wrong with tunes bearing such titles as "Might As Well Get Juiced" or "Too Tight," another potential hit single if the marketing folks at Virgin know the difference between what they think the Stones are, and what they actually are.

In an unusual turn, the album closes with two numbers spearheaded by the raspy vocals of Keith Richards. "Thief in The Night" and "How Can I Stop" sound less like Stones and more like X-pensive Winos (Richards' other band), but it all seems to go down the same.

Which leads one to an interesting point once the CD is over and returned to its jewel box: is it the Stones, or just an incredible simulation? A scan of the credits reveals that the band had a lot of help from the likes of Waddy Wachtel (an X-pensive Wino), Blondie Chapel (a Beach Boy?), Jim Keltner (a famous session drummer whose relegated to percussion status), Daryl Jones (Wyman's stand-in) and Don Was (co-producer with the Glimmer Twins).

Then again, the Stones have always recruited an assorted cast of characters to fill out their albums. Nicky Hopkins, Ian Stewert and Bobby Keys based their careers on playing with the Stones. It's only a different crew this time; and thirty years later, it's still only rock n' roll.

Shawn Perry

"...they are still at their best when they're mining American blues, soul and R&B, and giving those styles a new twist....feral without sounding forced, contemporary without succumbing to modern-rock trendiness. It's the Stones we loved back in the day..."

Rolling Stone 10/2/97, pp.52-54 4 Stars (out of 5)

"...Here they are happily bumming fags and busking away at the blues in some place far beyond reality, where the Darwinist take on rock'n'roll survivalism pretty much makes them untouchable....it is, in parts, near-revelatory..."

New Musical Express (9/20/97, p.55) - 7 (out of 10)

"...[shows] a reliance upon slow rhythm & blues balladry as a sustaining force...."

Entertainment Weekly (10/03/97, pp.80-82) Rating: B

BRIDGES TO BABYLON was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Best Rock Album. "Anybody Seen My Baby?" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.Kicking off with Charlie Watt's whip-smart timekeeping, BRIDGES TO BABYLON finds the Rolling Stones swaggering towards the millenium with a record that confidently asserts that rock & roll is far from a young person's game. Don Was returns behind the boards, and joining him at Mick Jagger's behest are uber-technophiles The Dust Brothers. Rather than leaping headlong onto an ill-fitting bandwagon, The Stones wisely gild their rock & roll lily with subtle electronic nuances. The sampled rap tossed into the the noirish mood of "Anybody Seen My My Baby?" and the swooshing laser sounds of "Might As Well Get Juiced" are present-day window dressing for a legacy deeply rooted in rhythm and blues. The Stones stop long enough to cleverly acknowledge their past by dropping a harp playing the main riff of "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" into the mid-tempo "Out Of Control" and using "Saint Of Me" to revel in their bad-boy persona. Keith Richards remains the soul of the Stones. His riffing and his endearing rasp continue to stand out, and his crooning on "You Don't Have To Mean It" demonstrates his deep love of reggae. The emotive one-two punch of "Thief In The Night" and "How Can I Stop" shows Keef to be a closet romantic camouflaged by a bad-ass strut.

Voodoo Lounge confirmed that the Stones could age gracefully, but it never sounded modern; it sounded classicist. With its successor, Bridges to Babylon, Mick Jagger was determined to bring the Rolling Stones into the '90s, albeit tentatively, and hired hip collaborators like the Dust Brothers ( Beck, Beastie Boys) and Danny Saber ( Black Grape) to give the veteran group an edge on their explorations of drum loops and samples. Of course, the Stones are the Stones, and no production is going to erase that, but the group is smart enough -- or Keith Richards is stubborn enough -- to work within their limitations and to have producer Don Was act as executive producer. As a result, Bridges to Babylon sounds like the Stones without sounding tired. The band is tight and energetic, and there's just enough flair to the sultry "Anybody Seen My Baby?," the menacing "Gunface" and the low-key, sleazy "Might as Well Get Juiced" to make them sound contemporary. But the real key to the success of Bridges to Babylon is the solid, craftsmanlike songwriting. While there aren't any stunners on the album, nothing is bad, with rockers like "Flip the Switch" and "Low Down" sounding as convincing as ballads like "Already Over Me." And, as always, Keith contributes three winners -- including the reggae workout "You Don't Have to Mean It" and the slow-burning "How Can I Stop" -- that cap off another fine latter-day Stones record.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine - All Music Guide

This album is nowhere near as bad as some fans make it out to be. In fact, I like it. Mick's voice still sounds great after all these years. 'Saint Of Me' is a classic. I also like 'Gunface' a lot and 'Low Down' and 'Anybody Seen My Baby' are real good too. There are three problems with this album. One being too many cooks in the kitchen, lets get back to the old days, why so many different producers? Two, the album is too long, Keef's last tune 'How Can I Stop' sounds too much like 1980's 'All About You' and isn't any better. I'm not crazy about 'Too Tight' either, both songs could have been dropped. Finally the last thing I don't like about B2B is no Bill Wyman on bass. Please come back Bill, you don't have to tour if you don't want to fly, but at least return to the studio and add that special touch on bass that's missing.

FLIP THE SWITCH

A scrap of flesh
And a heap of bones
One deep high
And a desperate moan

Three black eyes
And a busted nose
I said oh yeah, oh yeah

Take me up
Baby I'm ready to go
Shake me up
Baby I'm ready to go, yeah
Take me up
Baby I'm ready
Baby, baby I'm ready to go
(Chill me, freeze me, It's in my blood)

I'm not going to burn in hell
I cased the joint
And I know it well
Maybe my carcass
Would feed the worms
But I'm working
For the other firm

Take me up
Baby I'm ready to go
Fix me up
Baby I'm ready to roll, yeah
Set me up
Baby, baby, baby I'm ready to go
(Chill me, freeze me, It's in my blood)
Flip the switch

I got my money, my ticke
All that shit
I even got myself
A little shaving kit
What would it take
To bury me
I can't wait
I can't wait to see

I got toothbrush, mouthwash
All that shit
I'm looking down
In the filthy pit
I had the turkey
And the stuffing too
I even saved
A little bit for you

Lethal injection is a luxury
I wanna give it
To the whole jury
I'm just dying
For one more squeeze
Oh yeah
Oh yeah

Pick me up
Baby I'm ready to go
Take me up
Baby I'm ready to blow
Take me up
Baby if you're ready to go
Baby I got nowhere to go
Baby I'm ready to go
(Chill me, freeze me, to my bones)
Flip the switch

ANYBODY SEEN MY BABY

She confessed her love to me
Then she vanished on the breeze
Trying to hold on to that was just impossible

She was more than beautiful
Closer to etherial
With a kind of down to earth flavor

Close my eyes
It's three in the afternoon
Then I realize
That she's really gone for good

Anybody seen my baby
Anybody seen her around
Love has gone and made me blind
I've looked but I just can't find
She has gotten lost in the crowd

I was flippin' magazines
In that place on Mercer Street
When I thought I spotted her

Getting on a motor bike
Looking rather lady like
Didn't she just give me a wave?

Salty tears
It's three in the afternoon
Has she disappeared
Is she really gone for good

Anybody seen my baby
Anybody seen her around
If I just close my eyes
I reach out and touch the prize
Anybody seen her around

(Rap)

Anybody seen my baby
Anybody seen her around
If I just close my eyes
I reach out and touch the prize
Anybody seen her around

Lost, lost and never found
I must have called her a thousand times
Sometimes I think she's just in my imagination

Lost in the crowd

LOW DOWN

Won't you give me the low down
Just as quick as you can
Baby, I've been out of touch
Just give me the scam

Don't give me the sports page, baby
No political news
Don't you give me the gossip
Just give me the truth
Just between me and you

Give me the low down
If you can
Don't want a show down
I just want to know where I stand
Don't read me the horoscope babe
That ain't what I need
Our future will never last
But that's between you and me

I don't want the movie section
I'll see for myself
I don't want the news that fits
Shove it back on the shelf

Give me the truth
Just between me and you

Give me the low down
If you can
I don't want a show down
I just want to know where I stand

The headlines are screaming
They change everyday
As long as I ain't in them
I'm happy that way

I know that you won't lie to me
But you hold back the truth
Please give me the low down
I can only get it from you

Give me the truth
Just between me and you

Give me the low down
If you can
Don't want a show down
I just want to know where I stand

Give me the low down
As quick as you can
I don't want to hear about it
I want it straight from you

Give me the truth

ALREADY OVER ME

As you poured out the drinks for me
I felt your hooks sink right into me
And I knew you were my destiny
And I thought you'd get the best of me

On the way down to Mexico
As I danced in yuor rodeo
You say poverty is picturesque
As you dragged your nails across my chest

You're so cold
You're so cruel
I'm your man
Not your fool

Are you already over me
Are you already over me
Are you already over me
What a fool I've been

In the first flush of ecstacy
As you lay naked next to me
While our love put the dawn to flight
I just ignore all those warning lights

Cause when you laugh
I just cry
When you left
I just died

Are you already over me
Are you already over me
Are you already sick me
What a fool I've been

Hard to hold on
To a love divine
I'm kneeling in a corner
Praying to your shrine

 I've been hurt
 So confused
 I've been burned
 I've been bruised

 Are you already over me
 Are you already over me
Are you already sick of me
 Are you already over me
 Are you already over me
Are you already tired of me
 Are you already over me
 What a fool I've been
 What a fool I've been
 What a fool I've been

GUNFACE

Gonna go downtown
Gonna get my gun
Gonna dress real sharp
Gonna beat my drum
 I ain't gonna lie

Gonna walk so slow
Gonna talk just right
And my diamond ring
Gonna shine so bright
 I ain't gonna lie

I've got a debt to repay
 I ain't gonna cry
I put a gun in your face
 You'll pay with your life

And I got my ears
And I got my eyes
And I got my narks
And my alibis
 I won't waste your time

 You made one false move
 You made one mistake
 When the juice is squeezed
 That's the way it breaks
 You'll pay for your crime

Your tongue lickin' way out of place
I'll rip it out
I'll stick a gun in your face
You'll pay with your life

I taught her everything I taught her how to dream
 I taught her everything
I'm gonna teach her how to scream
I taught her all she knows
I taught her how to lie
 I taught her everything
I'm gonna teach her how to cry

 And you cause me hurt
 And you cause me pain
 And you turned the tap
 On my burning rage
And I can't put it out

 Gonna leave no sign
 Gonna leave no trace
 Gonna leave this town
 In a state of grace
 Give me the power

I got a debt to repay
 I ain't gonna lie
I put a gun in your face
 You'll pay for the crime

 I taught her everything
I taught her how to speak
I taught her all she knows
I taught her how to eat
 I half invented her
And now she acts so chic
 I taught her everything
 But now she's obselete

 I taught her everything
 How to read and write
I taught her all she knows
 She was a neophyte
 I taught her everything
I loved to watch her grow
 I taught her everything
And now I want to see her go

 I taught her everything
I got a debt to repay
 I ain't gonna cry
I'll put a gun in your face
 You're playing with your life

  I taught her everything
I taught her how to cheat
I taught her all she knows
  She was so indiscreet
  I taught her everything
I taught her how to lie
  I taught her everything
I'm gonna teach her how to cry

YOU DON'T HAVE TO MEAN IT

You don't have to mean it
You just got to say it anyway
I just need to hear those words for me

You don't have to say too much
Babe I wouldn't even touch you anyway
I just want to hear you to say to me

Sweet lies
Baby baby dripping from your lips
Sweet sighs
Say to me come on and play
Play with me baby

You don't have to mean it
You just got to say it to me baby
Whisper whisper whisper in my ear
(I don't believe it)
(I don't believe it)

I wouldn't want to use you
Ooh I wouldn't blame you anyway
If you never ever spoke to me
(I don't believe it)

Hmm just say those little words
Sit on my shoulder like a little bird
Baby baby sing those words for me

Sweet lies
Baby baby dripping from yuor lips
Sweet sighs
Ooh you make me cry

Oh baby you know it
You know what I want to hear
Dripping from your lips
I got to tell you baby
Dripping from you lips

You don't have to say too much
Whisper whisper baby baby
I just wanna hear you say to me

(I don't believe it)

You don't have to mean it
Babe just say it anyway
I just need to hear those words from your sweet lips

You don't have to mean it
You don't have to mean it
(I don't believe you)
You don't have to shout across the room
Just whisper in my ear baby

OUT OF CONTROL

I was out in the city
I was out in the rain
I was feeling down hearted
I was drinking again

I was standing by the bridges
Where the dark water flows
I was talking to a stranger
About times long ago

I was young
I was foolish
I was angry
I was vain
I was charming
I was lucky
Tell me how have I changed

Now I'm out
Oh out of control
Now I'm out
Oh out of control
Oh help me now

And the girls in the doorway
And the boys in the game
And the drunks and the homeless
They all know me

And the police on the corner
Give a nod and a wave
As they point me
To my final destination

I was young
I was foolish
I was angry
I was vain
I was charming
Feeling lucky
Tell me how have I changed

Now I'm out
Oh out of control
Now I'm out
Oh out of control
Oh help me now

In the hotel I'm excited
By the smile on her face
But I wondered
How was time
Gonna change her

I was young
I was foolish
I was angry
I was vain
I was charming
I was out there
Tell me how have I changed

Now I'm out
Oh out of control
Oh I'm out
Oh out of control

SAINT OF ME

Saint Paul the persecutor
Was a cruel and sinful man
Jesus hit him with a blinding light
And then his life began
I said yeah
I said yeah

Augustin knew temptation
He loved women, wine and song
And all the special pleasures
Of doing something wrong
I said yeah
I said yeah

I said yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me

And could you stand the torture
And could you stand the pain
Could you put your faith in Jesus
When you're burning in the flames

And I do believe in miracles
And I want to save my soul
And I know that I'm a sinner
I'm gonna die here in the cold
I said yes, I said yeah

I said yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me

I thought I heard an angel cry
I thought I saw a teardrop falling from his eye

John the Baptist was a martyr
But he stirred up Herod's hate
And Salome got her wish
To have him served up on a plate
I said yes
I said yeah

I said yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me

I thought I heard an angel cry
I thought I saw a teardrop falling from his eye
I thought I saw an angel cry

You'll never make a saint of me
You'll never make a saint of me

MIGHT AS WELL GET JUICED

If you really want to rip up your mind
If you want to take the lid off your life
If you want to reach down in the sump
To last dregs off the camel's back hump

And the wolves are howling right at your door
And the vultures want to tear off some more
Your flesh is burning right off your bones
Your children kick you out of your home

If you really want to tear up your mind
If you really want to get yourself blind
Might as well get juiced
Might as well get juiced

Hey mama
What's this crazy game of sevens, eights and nines
I can't keep up with you baby
I'm gonna give you such a piece of my mind
When I get around to it
'Cause honey I'm abused
Might as well get juiced

If you really want to melt down your mind
Crank it up to straight double time
If you really want to have you some fun
Spit right down on everyone
If you've got the strength to scream out "Hell Why?"
The wheels of life are passing you by
You might as well get juiced
Might as well get juiced

Some people like to get high on love
Buss it off with alcohol
Give me a little taste of those fumes
I need a little boost
I tell you the sweet things in life
How am I going to survive
I might as well get juiced
I might as well get juiced
I might as well get juiced
A little bit confused

ALWAYS SUFFERING

Let's take a walk
Just you and me
And talk of days gone by
Across the fields
Under the trees
Let's speak of you and I

While the whole world
Was wandering
We walked a steady line
When all our friends
Were wavering
We kept on trying

Now we're always suffering
Already lost
Always suffering
Already lost

Remember when
On summer days
I would sing a lovers son
How you would smile
Shower me with praise
And the sun shined on

Now the rain is falling slow
And the nights grow long
And the train
Cries out so hauntingly
She is gone

Now we're always suffering
Already lost
We're always suffering
Already lost

Please take these flowers
Smell the perfume
Let your soul come alive
Let there be hope
Hope in your heart
That our love may revive

For life is but a chance
On a wind swept hill
And the seeds of love
Are swirling above
Let them be still

But we're always suffering
We're already lost
Always suffering
Already lost

TOO TIGHT

Baby, don't get too tight with me
Yes, you're far too tight for me

I got your messages
And how can I resist
But if you come around
Don't slap the cuffs upon my wrist

Baby you're tight for me
(I warn you) yeah
Far too tight for me
Yeah

Untie those sheep shanks, yes
And all those fancy knots
I'm not Houdini, honey
C'mon now and loosen up

(Tight)
(Too tight)
(Too tight)
(Too tight)

Yeah, don't try to reel me in
With all those charm school looks
I've seen it all a thousand times
I sung that song, I wrote that fucking book

Do yourself a favor now
Don't drive me 'round the block
Let's split another bottle, now
Let's take a hit, loosen up

Don't get too tight on me
'Cause I'm, I'm bound so tight I can't breathe

We'll watch the sun go down
Upon the swollen sea
Aahhhhhh
If you try to chain me up
I'll vanish like a broken dream

Don't get so tight
Don't get so tight
Too tight

THIEF IN THE NIGHT

All the way, all the way
I miss your touch baby, yeah
Like a thief in the night
It can't be right...
(Like a thief)

I know where your place is
And it's not with him
I'm the one who is out here baby
Out here, just looking in
He ain't gonna like it at all
No no, that's no good
I know the feeling
(Just you wait there in the dark)
In the dark, baby
Yeah, how his dog can bark
Like a thief in the night
Like a thief in the night
Like a thief in the night
I'm gonna steal what's mine

Oh I'm gonna break the laws
But I'll get through you door
But you wait and see
Yeah, I'm gonna get ya, get you free
(Like a thief)

I found out where he keeps you
I've even been inside
You check under your pillow baby
You'll get the message
If I see you at your window, well then I'll know
No one can separate us

Like a thief in the night
Like a thief in the night
Like a thief in the night

Yeah, you can set me up
You can turn me in
Or burn me baby
Well you're in my skin
The only reason I'm breaking in
I'm coming baby, I'm breaking in

Like a thief in the night
Come on, yeah, oh yeah
Like a thief in the night
Oh baby you know what I'm talking, come on
You can call the police on me baby
Set me up and then bust me
Come on I dare you, come on, come on
I'll take the drop for you
Soften the blow baby, baby, baby
You know what I mean
Nothing I can do about it
It's the power of it
Come on, like a thief

Like a thief in the night
Like a thief in the night
Like a thief in the night

HOW CAN I STOP

You offer me
All your love and sympathy
Sweet affection baby
It's killing me

'Cause baby baby
Can't you see
How could I stop
Once I start baby

How could I stop once I start
How could I stop
Yeah yeah
How could I stop once I start

You look at me
But I don't know what you see
A reflection baby
Of what I want to be

I see your face
And I want to roll with it

But how could I stop
Baby how could I stop
How could I stop
Stop it, stop it

If I could, I'd take you all the way
Baby, baby listen what I say
There's even some things
That I just would not pay

'Cause how could I stop
If I start babe
How could I stop
If I start
Start with you

How could I stop
If I start, baby
How could I stop
If I start with you

It's too easy to lay here at your feet
I couldn't take the heat
There's somewhere else
Maybe you should go
Baby maybe baby just a further down the road
How could I stop
If I start with you baby
How could I stop
How could I stop
Once I start

You tell me baby
Once I've started with you
How could I stop
Once I start

Stop, stop, stop
