The two outstanding musiciasn who really turned the violin from classical use to jazz violin where Stephane Grappelli and Stuff Smith.

Grappelli was born in France in 1908 and was one of the original members of the Django Reinhard Hot Club of France. He had worked all over Europe in the top Jazz Festivals.

Stuff Smith was born in Ohio in 1909. He became one of the new heroes of the swing era when he brought his sextet to the Onyx Club on 52nd Street in New York. He was one of the first toplay an amplified violin. During his lifetime he won many jazz awards.

Jean-Luc Ponty has taken up the mantle from Grappelli and Smith. You can hear his outstanding virtuosity on this cd with Grappelli and Smith.
