Der Boogie Woogie ist die tanzbare Spielweise des Blues am Klavier und entwickelte sich zu Beginn dieses Jahrhunderts aus dem Ragtime. Er verbreitete sich vor allem unter schwarzen Musikern und erlebt heute in Europa eine Wiedergeburt. Er ist der Vorläufer des Swing, des Rhythm & Blues und des Rock`n Roll. Alle diese Stilrichtungen sind der JAZZmusik unterzuordnen.



Michael Pewny was born in Vienna on November 11th, 1963. As making music runs in the family, because of his father, Leopold (piano),today director of Allianz&Elementar, insurance Company Ldt.,he started playing classical piano at the age of six. At age thirteen, he taught himself to play Blues & Boogie Woogie piano by listening to old records of his favourite piano players, Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and Meade Lux Lewis, who were poular in the USA in the late 30s. It was the legendary 1976 Vienna Boogie Woogie Session which inspired him to intensify his piano efforts. In 1981, Michael had his first puplic appearance at the Viennese blues club 'Papas Tapas'. After 9 years of playing in clubs (especially at 'Jazzland' and 'Roter Engel') to finance his university studies (business administration) and during the ensuing military service, he recorded his first LP "Vienna Boogie Woogie" with Thorsten Zwingenberger on drums in 1988. In 1990, Bellaphon became interested in his music and released "Left Hand Roller" featuring Michael together with the british singer Dana Gillespie. Beside of that he uses to work with the largest Austrian Bank Creditanstalt, BV, before joining the telecommunication company of KAPSCH AG. After several trips to the USA with Günther Schifter, primarily to New Orleans, and journeys to Asia, he recorded his second CD "Boogie On My Mind" featuring Martin Wichtl on saxophon and the singer Sabine Ruzicka from Krems (unfortunately the co-oparation came to a halt when she pursued a medical carrer). In 1994, Bellaphon released the CD "Vienna Boogie Woogie", followed by "Crazy`Bout Boogie" in 1996, which featured Christian Dozzler on harmonica, vocals and accordion. Festivals in Austria (Vienna) and abroad (Munich, Paris, Ecaussinnes and Burghausen) as well as trips to L.A. and Barcelona this year gave Michael inspiration and ideas for the recording of this most recent CD, which features many musician friends and instruments. Nowadays, Michael plays solo or with his trio and he loves playing with blues musicians from all over the world. The new CD "Movin`To.Chicago", featuring Al Cook, Michael Strasser, Michael Hudec, Martin Breinschmid, Stephan Rausch and Jan Scheer, will be presented at the Viennese, Schutzhaus Zukunft, Güntherstrasse, 1150, Schmelz, on April, 24th 1999, 8 p.m.(tickets: 9820127). Excellent food and beverages as well as DJ, star-guests, many musicians and dancing.

Michael Pewny (Klavier), wurde am 11. November 1963, in Wien, geboren und begann als Sechsjähriger, musikalisch vorbelastet durch seinen Vater Leopold (heute Dir. Bei der Allianz&Elementar Versicherungs AG, Tel. 0664-1822346) , klassischen Klavierunterricht zu nehmen. Mit 13 Jahren entdeckte er dann seine Liebe zum Blues und widmete sich, neben seiner Schulausbildung, hauptsächlich dem Anhören von Schellacks und Schallplatten seiner Vorbilder Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson und Meade Lux Lewis, welche diese Musik in 30er Jahren in den USA populär machten. Die Wiener Boogie Woogie Session, 1976, im Wiener Konzerthaus und die legendäre Boogie Woogie Session in Peter Rapp`s Sendung "Spotlight" waren ein entscheidender Auslöser. Bereits 1981 hatte Michael seinen ersten öffentlichen Auftritt in Wien und nach 9 Jahren in diversen Jazzclubs und Sessions mit Freunden, nebenbei war noch das Bundesheer und die Universität zu besuchen, nahm er 1988 seine erste LP "Vienna Boogie Woogie" mit Torsten Zwingenberger am Schlagzeug auf. Bereits 1990 entdeckte ihn eine deutsche Plattenfirma und produzierte mit ihm gemeinsam seine erste CD "Left Hand Roller" mit der aus England stammenden Sängerin Dana Gillespie. Daneben arbeitet er noch für die grösste österreichische Bank, Creditanstalt BV, bevor er in den Telekommunikationsbereich zur KAPSCH AG wechselte. Nach einigen USA-Reisen mit Günther Schifter nach New Orleans (USA), Konzerten und Fernsehauftritten , nahm er 1992 seine zweite CD "Boogie On My Mind" mit der begabten Sängerin, Sabine Ruzicka, aus Krems auf, deren Zusammenarbeit durch ihr Medizinstudium beendet wurde. 1994 kaufte Bellaphon sein Erstlingswerk auf und vertreibt es mittlerweile auch. Es dauerte bis 1996, als seine dritte CD "Crazy`Bout Boogie", mit Christian Dozzler, aufgenommen wurde. Heute spielt Michael vorwiegend solo, aber auch mit seinen Freunden Big Jay Mc Neely, Axel Zwingenberger, Dana Gillespie, Al Cook sowie Jean Pierre Bertrand u.v.a. Nebenbei hat er noch ein Trio. Zahlreiche Festivals im In- (Jazzfest Wien) und Ausland (Paris, München, Brüssel, Burghausen) sowie diesjährige Reisen nach den USA (L.A.) und Barcelona inspirierten Michael zur Aufnahme seiner 5. CD "Movin` To Chicago", welche im Frühjahr bei Susy Records erscheinen soll, und am 24. April in Wien, bei seinem nächsten Konzert im Schutzhaus "Zukunft" auf der Schmelz, 1150 Wien (Güntherstrasse), bei guter Küche, viel Tanz und Musik ab 20 Uhr präsentiert wird (Karten: 9820127).

Half of this CD has the vocal work by Sabine Ruzicka, which seemed to work okay for most cuts setting up the solo boogie numbers for Michael. "Low Down Dog" and "Dream Lucky Blues" are particular vocal cuts I remember. I don't think the recording captured the real magic that is in her voice however. Then Michael moves to the spotlight and shines as usual. There's no question that he has "Boogie On (His) Mind"! He gives you a little teases with his right hand that just make you wait until he gives you more. The left hand just drives on relentlessly which seems to be his style in his up-tempo numbers. Covering Ammons' "Mecca Flat Blues" is easy for Pewny which shows his versatiliy of as player. It goes in the favorite cuts category with "Boogie On My Mind". The Drums are played forcefully and tastefully by Michael Strasser and the Sax of Martin Wichtl is a great addition. Kudos to the engineer and producer Pewny who managed to get a perfect piano sound for this boogie CD. Boogie On, Michael Pewny!
