Men Without Hats made a minor comeback with 1987's Pop Goes the World, which featured the ingratiating electro-pop hit title track. Most of the songs on the record weren't as catchy as the hit, as the rest of the material emphasized beats and textures over hooks and melodies.

J. Bonhomme on Drums? Ho Ho! Those in the know will recognize Monsieur Bonhomme as a well-known Quebec City fixture (these chapeau-less chaps hail from North o' the border), the central symbol for an annual city-wide festival. Men Without Hats has come a long way since its minimalist beginnings, their latest assault on the pop charts being their most densely arranged and accessible production ever. Almost completely gone is the quirky edge and the slightly unsettling quality to Ivan's vocals, replaced by an obvious confidence that he wears well. Pop Goes The World is a strictly upbeat, dance-oriented disc, the title cut being an update (guess there had to be one) of their hit "Safety Dance," including a lightning-quick refrain of that tune's distinctive octave-stretch blip-blip hook. Malheureusement, ils chantent pas un seule chanson en Francaise. C'est dommage. While it's difficult to get past the great expectations of 1983, this is a solid, optimistic effort. Recommended tracks: "Pop Goes The World," "O Sole Mio," "Walk On Water."
