After a 10 year absence, Men Without Hats returned They present a 10 song cycle in the familiar synth-pop style they are known for. For this album, the brothers Doroschuk used classic synths like the Prophet 5 and the Yamaha CS-50 that were used on their first album, "Rhythm of Youth". They added new sounds to come up with an album that sounds both familiar and fresh for the 21st Century. For the first time, Ivan did all of the artwork, showing a talent that had been hidden for far too long. Each panel takes you deeper into the voyage, unfolding a mysterious and vivid view of their universe. The album was digitally recorded in Pro Tools at Stefan's Big Mountain Studio up in the Laurentian mountains of Quebec, where he engineered and produced the opus. All of the music was written by Ivan and Stefan, with the exception of some female background vocals by Mary-Lou Deehy, with Stefan's and her two daughters, Mary-Lynn and Emmy-Lou helping out.

The last Men Without Hats album came out 12 years previously and the hiatus must not have been long enough. The red-line slash icon and the tinker-toy sounding synths are back, but the wry songwriting and catchy melodies of the early days are gone. It's hard not to cringe when main man Ivan Doroschuk delivers such sophomoric lyrics so sternly. The excess of social commentary is simplistic and filled with clichés, and updating the Buggles' shining moment for the "Internet killed the video star" hook of "Telepathy" is the album's only clever moment. Musically, No Hats Beyond This Point features such juvenile instrumental backing and insipid melodies that it's about as satisfying as a Super Nintendo soundtrack. Fans who could once argue that the band had more to offer than "Safety Dance" will find it harder to defend their position than ever. Doroschuk's impressive artwork that fills the booklet suggests a more suitable creative outlet.
