Men Without Hats were never an album-oriented band, so Collection does the casual fan a favor by compiling all of their hits -- namely "The Safety Dance" (included in its original single mix) and "Pop Goes the World" -- onto one disc. While many of the songs aren't as strong as those two singles, they are enjoyable New Wave artifacts, making the compilation a fun nostalgia trip. Still, some casual fans will be disappointed that there aren't any lost classics on Collection, but less-discerning listeners will be pleased.

The new wave synth-pop collective Men Without Hats was formed in 1980 by brothers Ivan and Stefan Doroschuk. Ivan was the leader of the group, writing the majority of the songs and providing the lead vocals; Stefan was the guitarist and the other members changed frequently throughout the course of their career. The group independently released their debut EP, Folk of the 80's, in 1980; it was reissued the following year by Stiff in Britain. During 1982, the band consisted of Ivan, Stefan, and another brother, keyboardist Colin Doroschuk, along with drummer Allan McCarthy; this is the lineup that recorded Men Without Hats' 1982 debut album Rhythm of Youth. Taken from their debut, the single "The Safety Dance" became a major hit, peaking on the American charts at number three in 1983. Driven by an insistent three-chord synthesizer riff, the song was one of the biggest synth-pop hits of the new wave era. The group wasn't able to exploit its success, however. Folk of the '80s (Part III) stalled at number 127 on the charts in America and made even less of an impact in other parts of the world. Thanks to the minor hit title track, 1987's Pop Goes the World was a bigger success, yet it didn't recapture the audience their first album had gained. Released two years later, The Adventures of Women & Men Without Hats in the 21st Century failed to chart, as did its follow-up, 1991's Sideways. The two albums' lack of success effectively put an end to Men Without Hats' career.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All-Music Guide

Men Without Hats are best remembered for their infectious 1983 dance - floor smash "The Safety Dance" ("We can dance if we want to..."), but that track is just one of many melodic synth - pop gems found on this Canadian compilation. This disc was released shortly after an American compilation called Collection and features similar artwork, but their are significant differences between the two discs. As well as liner notes by the Hats' original manager Marc Durand, Greatest Hats features a different track lineup than its U.S. counterpart. Tracks found only on the Canadian disc include "Freeways," "On Tuesday" and "Sideways." Curiously, though, Greatest Hats omits Canadian hits like "Moonbeam" and "Hey Men," while including several tracks that weren't hits. Like the American Collection, this disc includes both versions of "The Safety Dance": the short version (as heard on the promo video) and the longer club mix, which features lead singer Ivan rapping. There was much more to Men Without Hats than "The Safety Dance," and Greatest Hats serves as a fine introduction to this quirky, melodic electro - pop ensemble.

The Safety Dance

We can dance if we want to, we can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine

Say, we can go where we want to, a place that they will never find
And we can act like we come from out of this world
Leave the real one far behind

And we can dance

We can go when we want to, the night is young and so am I
And we can dress real neat from our hats to our feet
And surprise them with the victory cry

Say, we can act if we want to, if we don't nobody will
And you can act real rude or totally removed
And I can act like an imbecile

Say we can dance, we can dance
Everything's out of control
We can dance, we can dance
They're doing it from pole to pole
We can dance, we can dance
Everybody look at your hands
We can dance, we can dance
Everybody taken the chance

The safety dance
The safety dance
The safety dance

We can dance if we want to, we've got all your life and mine
As long as we abuse it we are never going to lose it
And everything will work out right

Say, we can dance if we want to, we can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
well they're no friend of mine

Chorus

Living In China

They got the red book, they got the new look
All the little people that are living in China
They got the answers to all the questions
All of the little people that are living in China
The solution is revolution
For all the little people that are living in China
Got ping pong egg foo young
All of the little people that are living in China

What would chairman Mao say
If he knew what They're doing to his wife today
What did China do
She ordered out for submarines instead of Chinese food
China fields of rice
Modern man no longer evil he's a paradise
What did the chairman want
A great big wall they could all watch occidentals on

Chorus

What would chairman Mao say
If he knew wath his people think of him today
Revolution is out of hand
The gang of four trying to make it as a western ban
China, what do you need
You've got everything from your scruffy head to dirty feet
China do you want to dance
You're wearing makeup and listening to Adam And The Ants!

Chorus

Antarctica

Antarctica - Antarctica
Antarctica - Antarctica

Ice age is here, right in your town
Antarctica, look what you've done
And I, I feel like I've cheated your scheme
And I, I feel like you really know what I mean
Nightfall's heartbeat, the street's in a mess
On reflector, the beach is endless
And I, I feel like I've cheated your scheme
And I, I feel like you really know what I mean
It's my turn - It's my turn
Antarctica - Antarctica
No day, no night, and always the sound
Ice pressure
It's me that's found
And I, I feel like I'm really part of your scene
And I, I feel like you know what I mean
Pictures moving, and always the whirls
Antarctica, where are you now
And I, I feel like I'm really part of your scheme
And I, I feel like you're loosing your dream
Antarctica - Antarctica
Antarctica - Antarctica
And I, I feel like you know what I mean
And I, I feel like I'm really lost in your seam
It's my turn - It's my turn
It's my turn - It's my turn
It's my turn - It's my turn

I Got The Message

I got the message and the message is clear
I really really really really wish you were here
It was written on the back of a carton d'allumettes
It said I don't really miss you but I haven't tried yet
I got the message and the message is proof
There really is a thing they call the rhythm of youth
It will pick you up and it will make you wiggle this way
Et c'est facile à dire and it's easy to say

It's mine not yours
Get down on all fours
It's long and hard this road to mars

I have done a good thing
I got you going
Everybody's moving watch out it's showing
I have done a good thing
I got you dancing and everybody's happy

I have done a good thing
I got you moving
Everybody's dancing
They're really grooving
I have done a good thing (dansez moderne)
And everybody's happy

Chorus

C'est moi c'est toi
C'est nous c'est cool
C'est long c'est dur
Frappons nos têtes contre les murs

I have done a good thing
I got you going
Everybody's moving it's really showing
I have done a good thing
I have done a good thing
I got you dancing everybody's happy

I have done a good thing
I got you moving
Everybody's dancing
It's really grooving
I have done a good thing (dansez moderne)
And everybody's happy

Chorus

They got this thing they call the rhythm of life
It says to settle down and get a dog and a wife
And everybody's doing it all over the land
Et oui je ne comprends pas oh yes I don't understand

I Like

It really makes you wonder who they really are
They say money is no object and we've got a car
They kidnaped Tony, where did they go
They went to get it done before he got too old
They're incognito, they're into fame
They think they know it all you know their family's to blame
Isn't it funny, isn't sad
You come up empty thinking 'bout the good times that you had

But, I like
When they talk real loud
Try to tell you what they know
I like
When it blows real hard
And it doesn't even show

They say : "It's plain to see, life is not a mystery to me"
I say : "It's as plain as day, I hope you got yours right anyway"

It makes you wonder about the things they say
We are never gonna leave and we are never gonna stay
They talk for nothing, they talk for free
They talk behind your back and to your face they're really sweet
Check out the language check out the clothes
The mother buys the shoes and where she gets them no one knows
They go to parties to steal the show
By talking really loud and trying to tell you what they know

Chorus

Where Do The Boys Go

(Où vont les garçons)

We walked around in circles singing ooo ha o
I said we walked around for practically forever singing oo ha o
I said our heads were filled with things that
Didn't really matter anyway we're singing ooo ha o
I said we walked around for practically forever singing ooo ha o
I say!
We walked around in circles singing - ooo ha o
I said we walked around for practically forever singing - oo ha o
I said our heads were filled with things that
Didn't really matter anyway we're singing - ooo ha o
I said we walked around for practically forever singing - ooo ha o

I say:
Tell me, tell me, tell me, where do the boys go
Tell me, tell me, tell me, where do the boys go
Tell me, tell me, tell me, where do the boys go
Tell me, tell me, tell me, where do the boys go
Ok, third line everybody sing

We walked around in circles singing - ooo ha o
I said we walked around for practically forever singing - oo ha o
I said our heads were filled with things that didn't matter anyway
We're singing - ooo ha o
I said we walked around for practically all eternity singing - ooo ha o
I say we walked around in circles! - ooo ha o
I say we walked around in circles! - ooo ha o
I say we walked around in circles! - ooo ha o
I say we walked around in circles! - ooo ha o
All to the tune of this very simple melody

Tell me, tell me, tell me, please, where do the boys go
Tell me, tell me, tell me, please, where do the boys go
Tell me, tell me, tell me, please, where do the boys go
Tell me, tell me, tell me, please, where do the boys go
Where do the boys go
Where do the boys go
Where do the boys go
Where do the boys go

Freeways (Euromix)

On the freeway
Freeways

American radio
In your homes and bars
It's music to my ears
In a foreign car
Pop radio stars

Abba, Roxy, T-rex
Seat-belt fastened tight
I feel secure
Both hands upon the wheel
My life's secured
If you're feeling low
Driving's the cure

- German text -

Vers le sud
Légère brume
Péage devant
Je rétrograde
Il n'y a personne
Lumières en haut
Rouges et bleues
Clignotantes
Je n'suis pas seul
On m'observe
On m'écoute
Lignes droites
Virages en s
Je roule à fond
Vers le sud
Dernier péage avant de sortir
Il est six heures

Pop Goes The World

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
Pop goes the world, by Men Without Hats

Johnny played guitar, Jenny played bass
The name of the band is the human race
Everybody tell me have you heard pop goes the world
Jenny played keyboard, Johnny played drums
Called little baby and a big bonhomme
Everybody tell me have you heard pop goes the world
It goes something like this

Johnny and Jenny had a crazy dream
See their picture in a magazine
Every little boy needs a girl
Pop goes the world
Jenny and Johnny getting smart (it seems)
Made more money on a movie screen
Every little nest needs a bird
Pop goes the world

One two three and four is five
Everybody here is a friend of mine
Whatever happened to the duke of earl
Pop goes the world
Six seven eight and nine is ten
Send Al Gunn to see the doctor (Ben)
Say what planet are we on the third!
Pop goes the world
And every time I wonder where the world went wrong
End up lying on my face going ringy dingy ding dong
And every time I wonder if the world is right
End up in some disco dancin' all night

Johnny played guitar, Jenny played bass
The name of the band is the human race
Everybody tell me have you heard pop goes the world
Johnny played guitar Jenny played bass
Ain't nobody couldn't take their place
Everybody tell me have you heard
Pop goes the world...

On Tuesday

On Tuesday
You came in from a storm
On Tuesday
You came in to be warm
On Tuesday

On Tuesday
You made me fly
Much higher than before
On Tuesday
You made me cry
And made me smile for more
Cause love is something I adore
On Tuesday

On Tuesday
You saved my life
I was nothing but a war
On Tuesday
You made me high
I was flying on the floor
Cause love is something I adore
On Tuesday

It was only make believe
Than along came jenny
Chains in her hair
On Tuesday

On Tuesday
You waved goodbye
You stepped into the storm
On Tuesday
You saved my life
A smile will keep me warm
On Tuesday
You made me cry
Like a child being born
On Tuesday
You made me high
I'll be flying ever more
Cause love is something I adore
On Tuesday

It was only make believe
Than along came jenny
Chains in her hair

On Tuesday
On Tuesday

Sideways

Step inside the reason why we look together when we find
Come inside the world's a ball we rise above it as we fall
Everybody's open air so love me love me love me where?
A million things and one to fly (say)
Life's a witch and then you smile

Took a trip inside
Your heart has seen
Much better days
Before we hit the high one here's to you
Sideways

The moon is warm the river's high and love,

forever never dies

Check inside yourself and see that maybe you weren't

meant to be

Took a ride inside
Your heart has seen
Much better days
Until we hit the right one here's to you
Sideways

Here's looking at you sideways

Had a dream where everybody
Looked like someone else
The farthest I could get from
Was the closest to myself
Tonite I'll dream tomorrow's
Going to be that better day
And in the morning I'll remember you...
Sideways
Here's looking at you
I'm gonna give it to your sideways

Editions Of You

Well I'm here looking thru' an old picture frame
Just waiting for the perfect view
I hope something special will step into my life
Another fine edition of you
A pin up done in shades of blue
Some don't play yourself for a fool
Too much cheesecake too soon
And don't let this happen to you

Sometimes you find you're yearning for the quiet life
The country air and all of its joys
But badgers couldn't compensate at twice the price
For just another night with the boys
And boys will be boys will be boys

They say love's a gamble hard to win easy to lose
And while sun shines you'd better make hay
So if life is your table and fate is the wheel
Then let the chips fall where they may
In modern times the modern way

And as I was drifting past the lorelei
I heard those slinky sirens wail (ooo)
So look out sailor when you hear them croon
You'll never be the same again oh no
Their crazy music drives you insane this way

So love me leave me do what you will
... who knows what tomorrow might bring
Learn from your mistakes is my only advice
And stay cool is the main rule
Don't play yourself for a fool
Too much cheesecake too soon
Old money's better than new
No mention in the latest tribune
And don't let this happen to you
