Mile High Music Festival recorded on July 20, 2008 Commerce City, Colorado.

Dave Matthews Band treated festival-goers to a super charged, electric set as the closer of the inaugural Mile High Music Festival outside Denver, Colorado in July 2008. Refreshed from a week-long respite midway through the annual summer tour, Dave Matthews Band delivered an incendiary two and a half hour performance, including new covers unveiled earlier in the summer. Highlights of the Live at Mile High release include 'Jimi Thing', which features a commanding solo by Boyd and Dave's entertaining scatting. Carter's thundering drum solo on 'Two Step', and Tim Reynolds' solos on 'You Might Die Trying' and 'Proudest Monkey' are not to be missed.

DMB’s cover of Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer will make its album debut on the Colorado release. From the crowd stirring opener, Don’t Drink the Water through the prized #41 jam, to the triple encore ending with Sly and the Family Stone’s Thank You (Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Agin), Live at Mile High Music Festival is a must-have for the DMB collection.

Live at Mile High Music Festival is a live album by the Dave Matthews Band from the 2008 Mile High Music Festival outside Denver, Colorado. In its first week of sales, the album debuted at #97 on the US charts. The concert featured many old songs such as "Don't Drink the Water", "Two Step" and "#41", as well as more recent songs such as "Corn Bread" and "Eh Hee". This is the first album to be released by the band without saxophonist LeRoi Moore and the first to feature Bela Fleck and the Flecktones saxophonist Jeff Coffin for the entire set. Coffin stepped in for Moore after he was in an ATV accident. Tim Reynolds also sat in as a guest for the complete set, as he did throughout the 2008 summer tour. It was released on Tuesday December 16, 2008.

Mile High Music Fest - Dave Matthews closes it up

With a spectacular light show the Dave Matthews Band put the finishing touches on the first annual Mile High Music Festival. The assumption is that fans come for the headliners then check out the other bands - but during Tom Petty last night and Matthews tonight there was a steady stream of fans leaving as they played. The after-show jam is set to go to 1 a.m. with various artists showing up to kick it out.  And with that, Colorado's grand experiment with a new festival ends. It seems like a sequel for next year would be a sure bet - we'll see.

Mark Brown - Rocky Mountain Music

Long a guiding light of the jam scene, the Dave Matthews Band is always better witnessed in its natural road warrior setting, and LIVE AT MILE HIGH MUSIC FESTIVAL is no exception. The sprawling three-disc set captures all of the groups many shades, from the melancholy, dulcet tones of "Proudest Monkey" to the full-out rocking version of the combo's first big hit, "Ants Marching." Other highlights include a spirited cover version of "Sledgehammer" on which Matthews sounds eerily like Peter Gabriel, and a rousing eight-minute take on Sly Stone's funk classic, "Thank You (Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Agin)."

This is the first DMB album that doesn't include founding member and saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who died last summer after complications from an ATV accident. When Moore was first injured, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones saxaphonist Jeff Coffin filled in for the remainder of the DMB tour, including this show at the Mile High Festival near Denver, Colorado. Aside from the tragic line-up change, there's nothing too new about this 3-CD release that's filled with the usual DMB fan-pleasing material (Tripping Billies, So Much to Say, Too Much, Ants Marching), but there are enough new sounds and the band is revived enough to make for a fresh listen. Matthews throws in his solo tracks Gravedigger and So Damn Lucky for group interplay, but the wild card is a serviceable cover of Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer. Not bad. It might not be the entry point for a non-fan, but for hardcore fans (and they are legion), this won't disappoint.
