2016 3xCD Bama Rgas - DMDD138

By November 1992, Dave Matthews Band had been performing together for just over a year. While the band had consistently made board tapes of their weekly Trax appearances, this show, recorded by John Alagia, is the very first live DMB multitrack recording.

This recording captures the freshness of the young band as they further define an already-strong approach to stage and delivery. With a 22-song set, including only 1 cover, Dave Matthews Band’s catalog was already extensive, even in the early stages of their career. The setlist contains now-classic DMB staples, such as the set-opening “The Song That Jane Likes,” “Two Step,” and “What Would You Say,” as well as THE now-retired “Spotlight.” Original founding member, Peter Griesar, plays keys throughout the show and harmonica on “So Much To Say,” and a very vocal LeRoi goads Boyd to jam freely on his violin, keeping the energy high through the encore of this must-have show.

The Dave Matthews Band plucked a show so old for the next installment of the group’s Live Trax series of archival releases that comprehensive fan sites only had a partial setlist. Live Trax Vol. 37 features the oldest live multitrack recording in the DMB vault – November 11, 1992.

For decades DMB’s November 11, 1992 show was thought to have taken place at The Flood Zone in Richmond, where the group usually performed on Wednesday nights. With today’s announcement we have confirmation the 11/11/92 performance went down at Trax in DMB’s hometown of Charlottesville. Dave Matthews Band played at Trax a total of 147 times according to DMB Almanac including nearly every Tuesday in the early 1990s. For some reason that week in November, Matthews and his mates played the Coran Capshaw-owned venue on Wednesday and famed producer/engineer John Alagia was on hand to record the show in all its multitrack glory.

We get to hear an early version of the band on the new Live Trax as keyboardist/harmonica wiz Peter Griesar was still on board and Boyd Tinsley had recently become a full-time member. Just about a year and a half after the first DMB show, which also took place at Trax, the group shows off originals that were new at the time but are now beloved classics such as “The Best Of What’s Around,” “Dancing Nancies,” “Two Step,” “What Would You Say,” “Ants Marching” and “Jimi Thing.” There’s also a rare take on “Spotlight” which was retired just a year later and the evening’s lone cover is a take on John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery.”

Live Trax Vol. 37 is available for pre-order via via the band’s online store and will be released on April 8. Pre-orders will ship on or around April 5.
