The name I have chosen is neither official or proper, but, is just so that you have or can find the lyrics to this. Keep in mind that none of the other jams on the album have words, other than "The Last Stop (Reprise)" and "Pantala Naga Pampa."

1998 CD RCA 67660
1998 CS RCA 67660
1998 LP RCA 67660

This LP was released on April 28, 1998. The album featured eleven songs, nine of them "new." The only songs that weren't necessarily new were "Halloween" which appears on Recently, and "Pantala Naga Pampa", a short jam which used to be included as part of "Jimi Thing" when it was played live. The first single for the album was "Don't Drink the Water," a song that was played in many encores during the 1997 touring. The song previously went by the names "Leave Me Praying" and "Weight of the World." The second single was "Stay (Wasting Time)", which, is arguable one of the happiest songs the band has ever come up with. The third and final single was the grammy nominated "Crush." Some of the other songs with merit include "Spoon," in which Alanis Morrissette adds her voice. The version of "Halloween" is more updated and redefined. The album has a hodgepodge of sounds and makes a welcome addition to any fan's collection. It truly shows the maturity of Dave Matthews Band.

On January 5th, 1999, the Dave Matthews Band received two Grammy Nominations for Before These Crowded Streets: The song "Crush" was nominated for Best Pop Song By A Duo/Group With Vocals, and the album was nominated for Best Rock Album.

The Dave Matthews Band made their reputation through touring, spending endless nights on the road improvising. Often, their records hinted at the eclecticism and adventure inherent in those improvisation, but Before These Crowded Streets is the first album to fully capture that adventurous spirit. Not coincidentally, it's their least accessible record, even if it's more of a consolidation than it is a step forward. Early Dave Matthews albums were devoted to the worldbeat fusions of Graceland and Sting, but his RCA efforts incorporated these influences into a smoother, pop-oriented style. Here, everything hangs out. Old trademarks, like jittery acoustic grooves and jazzy chords, are here, augmented by complex polyrhythms, Mideastern dirges and, on two tracks, the slashing strings of the Kronos Quartet. Some fans may find the new, darker textures a little disarming at first, but they're a logical extension of the group's work, and in many ways, this sonic daring results in the most rewarding album they've yet recorded. The Dave Matthews Band hasn't completely vanquished their demons, however — songwriting remains a problem, especially since relying on grooves, improvisation and texture allows them to skimp on melody, and Matthews' lyrics can be awkward and embarrassing, especially if he's writing about sex. Still, these are minor flaws on an album that relies on tone and improvisation, both of which are in ample supply on Before These Crowded Streets.

The Dave Matthews Band moves its music forward by increments on Before These Crowded Streets. While the album offers more of the folkish melodies and vaguely internationalist rhythms that made this Charlottesville, Virginia, group a major record and concert draw, it also finds them adding new colorings to the mix. Alanis Morissette guests on two cuts, "Spoon" and the disc's first single, "Don't Drink the Water," and banjo whiz Bela Fleck sits in, too. More interesting, though, is the modernist string arrangement played by the Kronos Quartet on the driving "Halloween." Matthews's obvious hopes to lead something other than a jam band are at least partly fulfilled here; at the same time, Streets should keep his customers satisfied.

"Put your troubles down," Matthews croons in the 40-second opener "Pantala Nago Pampa." .... But the singer can't take his own advice.... [T]he bulk of Before These Crowded Streets feels morose and overlong, with most songs dawdling along for seven or eight minutes. In concert, the cumulative effect may well be ascension, but listening at home, what comes across is insularity, a party you're denied entry to. Cultists will eat this up ... [but] the rest of us will probably be left craving more meat and less sizzle.

Spin

A conceptual and musical tour de force ... shines above much of today's disposable pop fare.

People

Dave Matthews Band has always been primarily a live band, constantly playing sold-out shows and developing new material on the road. Though the band is successful at recording multi-platinum collections of catchy and soulful songs, part of the reason Matthews's latest release is so remarkable is that he stopped touring, did nothing but write material, and dug deep in the studio with his band, attacking the songs with a new approach. Before... is Matthews's best release to date, with strong lyrics and global musical influences successfully blended into a sound that is clearly his own. The album also features great cameos from Alanis Morissette, Kronos Quartet and Béla Fleck.

PANTALA NAGA PAMPA

Come and relax now
Put your troubles down
No need to bear the weight of your worries
Yeah, let them all fall away.

RAPUNZEL

Ha, open wide
All so good I'll eat you
Take me for a ride
In your sweet delicious,
Perfect, little mouth
There upon I linger
You will have no doubt
That I'll do my best for you
I do, love...

Let's stop to get it going
Lost myself just thinking
'Bout the two of us
From each other drinking
Begin with the lips
Fingertips and kissing
Turn me inside out
I do my best for you

Up and down we go
From the top you push me
This is such a thrill
Lost in love and dancing
Shake your tambourine
You blow my head open
Of one thing I'm sure
I do my best for you
I do...

For you I would crawl
Through the darkest dungeon
Climb a castle wall
If you're my Rapunzel
You let your hair down
Right in through your window
Good, they locked the door
'Cause I do my best for you

I think the world of you
All of my heart I do
Blood through my veins for you
You alone have all of me
I give my world to you
To you I will be true

Too good to be real
The smell of something cooking
My soul you're to steal
Food of love we're filling
What you've given me
For it there is no measure
Of one thing I know
I'll give my best for you

I think the world of you
All of my heart I do
Blood through my veins for you
You alone have all of me
From you my strength is full
To carry your burdens, too
I give my word to you

Hip lock up so tight
You know drive me crazy
Crazy is alright
With you looking at me
You make me feel high
Every single thing you do to me
Is like I'm drunk

Given me, given me the shivers

THE LAST STOP

Fire
The sun is well asleep
The moon is high above
But fire grows from the East
And how is this
Hate so deep?
Lead us all so blindly, killing, killing
Fools are we
If hate's the gate to peace
This is the last stop.

For raining tears...

War
The only way to peace
Well, I don't fall for that
Raining tears
You're righteous, so righteous...
You're always so right
Go ahead and dream
Go ahead believe that you are the chosen one.

Raining tears...

Oh no
Gracious even God
Bloodied on the cross
Your sins are washed enough
A mother's cry:
"Is hate so deep
Must my baby's bones
This hungry fire feed?"
Smoke clouds roll in
The symphony of death
This is the last stop.

Scream
Right is wrong now
Ha, shut up you big lie
This black and white lie
You comb your hair to hide
Your lying eyes
You're righteous, so righteous...
You're always so right
But why your lie
Go ahead and dream
Go ahead believe that you are the chosen one
This is the best stop.

Here there's always blowing up
And I hope that we can break it down
So it's not so black and white
This is the last stop.

Here there's more than showing us
And I hope that we can break it down
So it's not so black and white
Black and white
You're righteous, you're righteous...
You're always so right
And there you are nailing a good tree
And then say forgive me, forgive me
Go ahead and dream
Go ahead believe that you are the chosen one

This is the last stop...

Here there is more than growing up
And I hope that we can break it back
It's not so black and white
So right...

DON'T DRINK THE WATER

Don't drink the water here...

Come out, come out, no use in hiding.
Come now, come now, can you not see
There's no place here, what were you expecting?
No room for both, just room for me.

So you will lay your arms down,
Yes, I will call this home.

Away, away, you have been banished.
Your land is gone, and given to me.

And here I will spread my wings.
Yes, I will call this home.

What's this you say, you feel a right to remain?
Then stay and I will bury you.

What's that you say, your father's spirit still lives in this place?
Well, I will silence you.

Here's the hitch, your horse is leaving.
Don't miss your boat, it's leaving now.

And as you go I will spread my wings.
Yes, I will call this home.
I have no time to justify to you,
Fool, you're blind, move aside for me.

All I can say to you my new neighbor,
You must move on or I will bury you.

Now as I rest my feet by this fire
Those hands once warmed here, but I have retired them.
I can breathe my own air and I can sleep more soundly
Upon these poor souls,
I'll build Heaven and call it home.
Cause you're all dead now.

I live with my justice
And I live with my greedy need
I live with no mercy
And I live with my frenzied feeding
I live with my hatred
And I live with my jealousy
I live with the notion that I don't need anyone but me

Don't Drink the Water
Don't Drink the Water
Blood in the water
Don't Drink the Water

STAY (WASTING TIME)

We were walking
Just the other day
It was so hot outside
You could fry an egg.
Remember you were talking
I watched as sweat ran down your face
Reached up and I caught it at your chin
Licked my fingertips

We were just wasting time
Let the hours roll by
Doing nothing for the fun
A little taste of the good life
Whether right or wrong
Makes us want to stay, stay, stay for awhile

Then later on the sun began to fade
Then the clouds rolled over our heads
And it began to rain
Oh, we were dancing mouths open
Splashing tongue taste
For a moment this good time would never end
You and me
You and me
Just wasting time
I was kissing you,
You were kissing me love
From good day into a moonlight
Now a night so fine
Makes us wanna stay, stay, stay, stay for awhile

Makes you wanna...
Makes me wanna...
Don't it make you wanna?

Wasting time
I shall miss this thing
When it all rolls by
What a day...
Wanna stay, stay, stay, stay for awhile

Hey love
Oh just groping you
Rolling in the mud
Stay a while
Come on love
Wanna stay, stay, stay, stay for awhile

Makes me wanna, makes me wanna stay.

Makes me wanna, makes me wanna stay... don't it?
Make you wanna stay... don't it?

HALLOWEEN

Hey little dreamer's eyes open and staring up at me
Oh, little lovely eyes, oh, radiant
Wait until I come and I will steal you
Wait until I come I'll take your soul
Wait until I come and I will steal you
Wait until I come and I will go

I will dream within the night
Shadows on the windows
Lead our love
Every love will lead me on tonight
I will lay you lying,
I will not within this life

Oh, little dreamer eyes open and waving here
Wait until I come, I see him with you
Until I come, I'll leave with me
Until I come, I do come, love...

We will leave it all behind
Oh, and in the nightmares,
I'll fill them in good time, oh
They will 'seech your mind
And no lying, and you may, well, ask,
"Why do we run around here?
Oh, while you come inside me
Oh, why does it rip me all between?"
Why then, why then, watch this little fuck!

Going away, yeah...
Why this lonely, why this lonely, why this lonely, love?
Why this lonely, why this lonely, why this lonely, love?
Halloween.
Carry on, burial, burial, burial, burial, burial
And let them see
But tell us, are you satisfied with fucking?
Don't walk away, don't walk away, don't walk away
I'm talking to you
Lovey dove, lovey dove, love is hell, love is up to you
Love, love, love, love is up to you
Love, love, love, love is up to you
Fuck!

In the sky it is wrote
Up from the ground,
I stay out of breath
I felt the temperature rises
And I felt across the creeping
These graves... (Who knows...?)

THE STONE

I've this creeping
Suspicion that things here are not as they seem
Reassure me
Why do I feel as if I'm in too deep?
Now I've been praying
For some way to show them
I'm not what they see
Yes, I have done wrong
But what I did I thought needed be done
I swear

Unholy day
If I leave now I might get away
Oh, but this weighs on me
As heavy as stone and as blue as I go
I was just wondering if you'd come along
To hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
But if not I'll go
I will go alone
I'm a long way
From that fool's mistake
And now forever pay
No, run
I will run and I'll be ok
I was just wondering if you'd come along
To hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
But if not I'll go
I will go alone
I go a long way
To bury the past for I don't want to pay
Oh, how I wish this
To turn back the clock and do over again
I was just wondering if you'd come along
To hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
But if not I'll go
I will go alone

I need so
To stay in your arms, see you smile, hold you close
And it weighs on me
As heavy as stone and a bone chilling cold
I was just wondering if you'd come along
Tell me you will.

CRUSH

Crazy, how it feels tonight.
Crazy, how you make it all alright, love.

Crush me,
With those things you do
And I'll do for you
Anything, too, oh...

Sitting, smoking, feeling high...

And in this moment
Oh, it feels so right...

Lovely lady, I am at your feet,
Oh, God, I want you so badly.
And I wonder this:
Could tomorrow be so wonderous
As you lay sleeping?

Let's go drive 'til morning comes,
Watch the sunrise and fill our souls up,
And drink some wine 'till we get drunk.
Yeah...

It's crazy, I'm thinking,
Just knowing that the world is round
And here I'm dancing on the ground
Am I right side up or upside down?
And is this real, or am I dreaming?

Lovely lady, let me drink you, please.
Won't spill a drop, no, I promise you
Lying under this spell you cast on me
Each moment the more I love you.

Crush me, come on
Oh, yeah...

It's crazy, I'm thinking
Just knowing that the world is round
And here I'm dancing on the ground
Am I right side up or upside down?
Is this real at all, or am I dreaming?

Lovely lady, I will treat you sweetly
Adore you, I mean...
You Crush me,
And it's times like these
When I think that feeling
I know how I love you.

Come on, come on, baby...

It's crazy, I'm thinking
Just as long as you're around
And here I'll be dancing on the ground
Am I right side up or upside down?
To each other we'll be facing
My love, my love,
We'll beat back the pain we've found
You know I mean to tell you
All the things I've been thinking
Deep inside, my friend.
Each moment the more I love you.

Crush me, come on, baby...

So much you have given up
That I would give you back, again and again.
Oh, my love, many now hold you,
But please, please, just let me, always.

THE DREAMING TREE

Standing here
The old man said to me,
"Long before these crowded streets
Here stood my dreaming tree."
Below it he would sit
For hours at a time
Now progress takes away
What forever took to find
And now he's falling hard
He feels the falling dark
How he longs to be
Beneath his dreaming tree

Conquered fear to climb
A moment froze in time
When the girl who first he kissed
Promised him she'd be his
Remembered mother's words
There beneath the tree
"No matter what the world
You'll always be my baby."
"Mommy come quick,
The dreaming tree has died."
The air is growing thick
A fear he cannot hide
The dreaming tree has died

Oh, have you no pity?
This thing I do
I do not deny it
All through this smile
As crooked as danger
I do not deny
I know in my mind
I would leave you now
If I had the strength to
I would leave you up
To your own devices
Will you not talk?
Can you take pity?
I don't ask much
But won't you speak, please?

From the start
She knew she had it made
Easy up 'til then
For sure she'd make the grade
Adorers came in hordes
To lay down in her wake
Gave it all she had
But treasures slowly fade
Now she's falling hard
Feels the fall of dark
How did this fall apart?
She drinks to fill it up
A smile of sweetest flowers
Wilted so and soured
Black tears stain the cheeks
That once were so admired
She thinks when she was small
There on her father's knee
How he had promised her,
"You'll always be my baby."
"Daddy come quick,
The dreaming tree has died
I can't find my way home
There is no place to hide
The dreaming tree has died."

Oh, if I had the strength to
I would leave you up
To your own devices
Will you not talk?
Can you take pity?
I don't ask much
But won't you speak, please?

Take me back, take me back, take me back...

Save me please.

PIG

Oh, isn't it strange
How we move our lives for another day?
Like skipping a beat
What if a great wave should wash us all away?
Just thinking out loud
Don't mean to dwell on this dying thing
But look at my blood
It's alive right now,
And deep and sweet within
Pouring through our veins
Intoxicate moving wine to tears
And drinking it deep
Then an evening spent dancing
It's you and me...

This love will open our world
From the dark side we can see a glow of something bright
Oh, there's much more than we see here
Don't burn the day away

Is this not enough?
This blessed sip of life,
Is it not enough?
Staring down at the ground
Oh, then complain and pray for more from above,
You greedy little pig
Stop, just watch your world trickle away
Oh, it's your problem now
It'll all be dead and gone in a few short years

Just love will open our eyes
Just love will put the hope back in our minds
Much more than we could ever know
Oh, so don't burn the day away
Don't burn the day away

Come sister, my brother
Shake up your bones, shake up your feet
I'm saying open up
And let the rain come pouring in
Wash out this tired notion
That the best is yet to come
But while you're dancing on the ground
Don't think of when you're gone

Love, love, love, what more is there?
'Cause we need the light of love in here
Don't beat your head
Dry your eyes
Let the love in there
There's bad times
But that's okay
Just look for love in it

And don't burn the day away...

Look, here are we
On this starry night, staring into space
And I must say
I feel as small as dust lying down here

What point could there be troubling?
Head down wondering what will become of me?
Why concern we cannot see
But no reason to abandon it
The time is short but that's all right
Maybe I'll go in the middle of the night
Take your hands from your eyes, my love
All good things must come to an end some time
But don't burn the day away
Don't burn the day away...

Come sister, my brother
Shake up your bones, shake up your feet
I'm saying open up
And let the rain come flooding in
Wash out this tired notion
That the best is yet to come
But while you're dancing on the ground
Don't think of when you're gone

Love, love, love, what more is there?
'Cause we need the light of love in here
Don't beat your head
Dry your eyes
Let the love in there
There're bad times
But that's okay
Just look for love in it

SPOON

Spoon in spoon
Stirring my coffee
I thought of you
And turned to the gate
And on my way came up with the answers
I scratched my head
And the answers were gone

From hand to hand,
Wrist to the elbow
Red blood sand
Could Dad be God?
Crosses cross hung out like a wet rag
Forgive you? Why?
You hung me out to dry
And maybe I'm crazy
But laughing out loud
Makes the pain pass by
And maybe you're a little crazy
But laughing out loud makes it all subside
Holding, I'm holding
I'm still falling,
I'm still falling

Spoon in spoon
Stirring my coffee
I thought of this
And turned to the gate
But on my way
Crack lightning and thunder
I hid my head
And the storm slipped away
Well, maybe I'm crazy
But laughing out loud
Makes it all pass by
And maybe you're a little crazy
And laughing out loud
Makes it all alright

Laughing out loud

From time to time,
Minutes and hours
Some move ahead while
Some lag behind
It's like the balloon that
Rise and then vanish
This drop of hope
That falls from his eyes

Spoon in spoon
Stirring my coffee
I think of this
And turn to go away
But as I walk
There're voices behind me saying:
"Sinners sin, come now and play."

Laughing out loud...

The Last Stop Reprise
Come in from the cold for a while
Everything will be alright
Come in from the noise for a time
Everything will be alright
Everything will be alright

For now, goodbye, friend,
Goodbye.

THE LAST STOP (REPRISE)

Come in from the cold for a while
Everything will be all right
Come in from the noise for a time
Everything will be all right

This song appears as a hidden track on Before These Crowded Streets.
The Bela Fleck banjo riff leads in, picking up where "The Last Stop"
(track three on the album) leaves off.
