RADIO BEMBA SOUND SYSTEM

 C o m m e n t s ,   N o t e s

After 3 years on tour, more than 120 concerts through 3 continents and a million of spectators, the first album live of Manu Chao and its group Radio Bemba Sound System will be on sale in more than 30 countries the 10th of september. The album includes new versions of titles of the 2 Manu Chao's solo album, news and covers of Mano Negra. A DVD including the entirety of the concert and new films will be on sale at the end of the year.

Internationaler geht's nimmer!

Anyone who's had the good fortune to see Manu Chao perform in the last few years knows that the polyglot singer's anarchic live shows have more in common with his old band Mano Negra than with the rough-hewn studio magic of his two solo albums. Mostly that's because his current touring outfit, the inspired Radio Bemba Sound System, is built along similar lines. With a rotating, multinational cast of more than 20 members (including more than a few Mano Negra alumni), Bemba has enough musical firepower to summon up the fierce, punked-up ska-dub-raï-hip-hop-en-español groove required by Manu's idiosyncratic material.

This live album collects 29 tracks of Manu's traveling circus recorded over multiple dates in multiple countries over the last three years. It's testament to Radio Bemba's tightness as a touring ensemble that the album sounds like one coherent (if long) set. Manu puts his band through its paces here, with selections from both 1998's Clandestino and 2001's Proximo Estacion Esperanza interspersed with Mano Negra classics and the occasional cover. All of his biggest solo songs are covered -- "Clandestino" (which boasts a lovely new guitar break), "Bongo Bong," "Bienvenida a Tiujana" -- as are such Mano Negra crowd-pleasers as "Mala Vida," "King Kong Five," and "Casa Babylon." Sadly, his moving, emotionally devastating "Desaparecido" is left off this collection -- which is a shame considering the song's undeniable impact on live audiences.

Still, Manu and Radio Bemba put on a magnificent show here. Bemba's blurting trombones, wailing accordions, frantic guitars, manic DJ samples, and furious rumba catalana percussion work up a fierce but nuanced wall of sound. "Rumba de Barcelona," is a perfect example -- the song manages to be both a smoldering rocker and a layered, melancholy homage to the band's spiritual hometown. Best of all are the punked-up reggae curveballs Manu and his crew casually toss off. From the roots-meets-ska version of Lee Perry's apocalyptic classic "Blood and Fire" to the brilliant appropriation of the "Armeggideon Time" riddim for "La Desperdida," Manu reconnects his vision to the roots-rock-rebel traditions of Bob Marley and the Clash -- while making music that can stand up next to theirs any day of the week.

Anyone who's caught Manu Chao and his band Radio Bemba Sound System at one of their live gigs will testify that the Parisian troubadour sure knows how to throw a party. This live album draws on reggae, salsa and Latin pop classics from Chao's first two excellent solo albums (Clandestino and Proxima Estacion: Esperanza) and joyous gems from his time leading the more punk tinged Mano Negra. While the styles vary as often as the languages (Chao flits from Spanish to English to French as he translates his life as a global nomad into his music), the common thread is a sense of vitality and hope. From the uplifting reggae of "Bienvenida a Tijuana" to the African pop and salsa of "Casa Babylon", Chao is the pied piper of multiculturalism, leading his crowd on a (literally) merry dance. And it's the crowd that really makes these 29 tracks come into their own. You can almost picture the mob waving, cheering, blowing whistles, shouting into megaphones and generally having the wildest time this side of Rio Mardi Gras. This is a great flashback for those harking after Chao live and a perfect introduction to his excellence for recent converts.
