Clandestino, Manu Chao's first solo effort, owed its greatness to its character. It was a minimalistic, yet filled with experimentation, album. But, what's most distinctive, it was honest, direct, intimate: the personal diary of someone who had traveled a lot, not only around Latin America but through life. Unfortunately, Chao seems to lose his way a little bit in Esperanza. Apparently intended to be a continuation of what started in Clandestino, it ends being just a clone of it. The reiteration of ideas and formulas takes away from Esperanza everything that made of Clandestino a memorable piece of work. The problem with Esperanza is that Chao, instead of deepening what he proposed in his first album, seems to overfly the surface of his ideas. The consequence of this is that he transforms charm into cliché, leaving the listener with a very light flavor. Anyway, Esperanza still has a bunch of great songs ("Mr Bobby," "Mi Vida," "Trapped By Love," "Me Gustas Tú," "Bixo") and good lyrics ("Mi Vida") which amply justify its listening. Dedicated fans will find that Esperanza is not what they were expecting, yet it's really easy-going and accessible so it will end working for them as well as for casual listeners.

Alberto Moreno de la Fuente - All-Music Guide, © 1992 - 2003 AEC One Stop Group, Inc.

We all know what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. But when the supremely movable Manu Chao -- the musical nomad who claimed to be "lost in the century" on his sleeper 1998 hit Clandestino -- meets the unyielding forces of time and aging, the results are far more subtle. The former provocateur behind the influential French band Mano Negra made fervid musical miscegenation his hallmark in the '80s. Punk rock, Latin rhythm, Arabic folk songs, African chants, country music, and more collided in the high-energy hybrid that stoked the Latin alternative scene from Spain to Mexico to Argentina. Clandestino, Chao's first post-Mano Negra effort after a few years spent wandering through Africa and Latin America, revealed a more intimate side. Delicately assembled from acoustic tracks recorded all over the world, the album featured a dreamlike repetition of rhymes, melodies, and imagery. Flash forward three years to Proxima Estación: Esperanza -- Chao has gotten older and wiser, and for the first time, he seems to have settled down -- and that's not a bad thing at all. As its title ("Next Stop: Hope" -- it's a Spanish subway recording) indicates, it's sunnier and more playful than Clandestino, even as it continues Chao's acoustic-based, roving-reporter method of songwriting. The samples mostly hail from Chao's new turf, Barcelona, where his Pakistani neighbors, his Brazilian friends, and even the dogs barking in the alley all find their way into his songs, as do the melodies from Clandestino itself. Whimsical wordplay and clever samples abound; and the childlike melodies indeed make for fine children's music (provided the tots speak English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Arabic), to Chao's professed delight. Esperanza may lack the breathtaking novelty of its iconoclastic predecessor and the existensial moodiness of the eternal wanderer. But Manu Chao at home is still Manu Chao, and that means you can count on a sonic journey unlike any other.

Mark Schwartz - Barnes and Noble

The debut from Manu Chao, the former leader of French world-punks Lo Mano Negra, leaned heavily on Latin America for its inspiration, but this time around he's obviously been spending time--at least in his head--in the Caribbean. Reggae rhythms abound, and the opener "Merry Blues" features some wonderfully wonky Jamaican-style brass, while "Promiscuity" takes its cue from Trinidadian calypso. Of course, this being Chao, there are plenty of playful touches--from ringing cell phones to speeded-up vocals--and inevitably there are the Latin influences throughout to remind you of what remains close to his heart ("La Primavera" in particular is a standout). But there's also some recycling from the last album, with two pieces sharing the "King of Bongo" melody, including "Mr. Bobby," his tribute to Bob Marley, and that's a little worrying. Is Manu Chao running out of inspiration? Certainly this doesn't have the freshness of Clandestino, however enjoyable it may be. If anything, it seems more of a holding action rather than a giant step forward. But sometimes that's necessary to be able to look to the future.

Chris Nickson -Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Doch was schreibe ich?

„King of the bongo“.

Sandra Brosi / Intro - Musik & so

Proxima Estacion: Esperanza translates as Next Stop: Hope, with Chao articulating his feelings of rootless travelling's attendant potential for ups and downs. He should know, after having only recently put down cautious roots in Barcelona. Before that, after disbanding Mano Negra in 1995, he'd been almost constantly road-bound. 1998s Clandestino solo debut was one of the absolute cross-genre classics of the last decade, its blur of short songs prompted by Chao's persistent globe-trawling, coming across like a postcard collage of melodies, modes, found sounds and even languages. Chao continues the cultural kaleidoscope approach towards songwriting, even directly quoting from Clandestino at several key points. His vocals jump from Spanish to English, French to Arabic, then into a Portunol (Portuguese/Spanish) jumble, sometimes lurching lingos in the space of a single verse. Chao's guitaring mixes reggae choppiness with Hawaiian-slide purity, his natural knack for phonetic rhythms also highly impressive, particularly when he's jogging and skipping out his ska-inspired verses. All the while, he's dropping in crackled bursts of globalised sound effects, sneaking these beside his ramshackle backing chorus chaos, or maybe disrupting a bullying street brass arrangement, or tweaking one of his gut-infiltrating basslines. Listen to the cascading vocals of "Eldorado 1997", the accelerated cartoon ska of "Promiscuity", the lunatic swing of "Trapped By Love" or the perverted cabaret oompah of "Papito", each song weaving into the next, the mulching getting ever more manic as this album races towards its climax.

TRAPPED BY LOVE

when you come i feelin better
sky is blue you say forever
ooh ooh, i've been trapped by love
then you go so change the weather
sky is grey bit more than ever
ooh ooh, i've been trapped by love...
i've been trapped by love
i've been trapped by love
i've been trapped by love...!

so my beer now taste so bitter
but i can't find anything sweeter
ooh ooh, i've been trapped by love
then you come and i feel better
see my eyes they're full of water
then again you go
so change the weather...

askin for the next together
i've been trapped by love
i've been trapped by love
i've been trapped by love...!

when you come i feelin better
sky is blue you say forever
ooh ooh, i've been trapped by love
then you come and i feel better
see my eyes they're full of water
then again you go
so change the weather...

askin for the next together
askin for the next together
i've been trapped by love
i've been trapped by love
i've been trapped by love!
i've been trapped by love!

LE RENDEZ-VOUS

last night we had a rendez vous
how do you do? comment allez vous?
we went to see a french movie
mais qu'est ce qu'il fait?
mais qu'est ce qu'il dit?
you really got a hold on me
i wanna hear you say: oh oui!
chérie chérie j'en rêve la nuit
chérie chérie comment ca va?
quelle heure est il?
je ne sais pas!

we hang around dans ton quartier
like walkin down champs elysées
you let me get in dans ton lit
best place in paris to be!

chérie chérie j'en rêve la nuit
chérie chérie comment ça va?
quelle heure est il?
je ne sais pas!

then you said: stop it! ça suffit!
won't let you get in dans ma vie
and anything i said or do

last night we had a rendez vous
how do you do? comment allez vous?
we went to see a french movie
mais qu'est ce qu'il fait?
mais qu'est ce qu'il dit?
i put my hand dans ton panier
you where not celle que vous croyez...
you really got a hold on me
i wanna hear you say: oh oui!

chérie chérie j'en rêve la nuit
chérie chérie comment ça va?
quelle heure est il?
je ne sait pas!

só tem que ser homem.
tem homem corno, homem baixo, homem gordo,
homem ingrato, safado, careca, cabeludo,
viado , ousado, temido,
