For Thirty Years Los Van Van have Been at the Forefront of Cuban Music with their Thrilling Fusion of Traditional Rhythms and Modern Rock. They Called it "Songo" and it Changed the Face of Modern Cuban Music. Today Los Van Van Are a Much Loved Musical Institution and an Integral Part of the Cuban Cultural Landscape. But above all this is Music for Dancing, as Sensuous, Swaying and Exuberant as a Steamy Havana Night ...

For thirty years, Los Van Van have been at the forefront of Cuban music with their thrilling fusion of traditional rhythms and modern rock. They called it 'songo', music for dancing, as sensuous, swaying and exuberant as a steamy Havana night.

Led by Juan Formell, Los Van Van have beome one of the most successful son groups in the world. To the Afro-Spanish sound of traditional Cuban music, Los Van Van have added a strong jazz emphasis. It is this fusion that has led to their popularity outside of Cuba and to a series of foreign record deals. They can be heard on Songo, Sandunguera, and Dancing Wet. The group released Azucar on the Xenophile label in 1995; La Habana Si followed a year later, and Los Van Van remained a prolific presence throughout the decade, releasing albums including 1997's Con la Salsa Formell and 1999's lego Van Van.

Leon Jackson - All Music Guide

Led by bassist and composer Juan Formell, the group Los Van Van - a sort of neo-charanga, the typical violin and flute ensemble - has been perhaps the most influential group in contemporary Cuban popular music for the past 30 years. Some of the group's innovations, especially in the refined updating of traditional rhythms with a pop and rock sensibility, are in evidence in this collection, which features mostly songs recorded in the 1980s and early 1990s. (Don't look for much more information than that in the accompanying booklet.) This is a group that can groove implacably and keep a light, sensual swing. Check out "Por Encima de Nivel," "Sera Que Se Acabo," or "Muevete." This is irresistible dance music--but also worth a close listen.
