This is the first of my solo excursions, the music was recorded on the road, in various hotels, houses, and even an occasional studio. It features duets, trios and more, with some very special musicians I've been honored to hook up with. The booklet has my diaries of the days of recording (sometimes on hotel stationery or whatever was handy) and photos. The self-designed package features my hand tinted photos as artwork (I was so fussy about the terra cotta background color, ended up scanning an actual tile for it) and no-plastic packaging (which is a limited edition - when they're gone (which we will notify) future copies will be in a conventional jewel box.)

Tony's long awaited solo album. A personal document of two years on the road. Instrumental duets, trios and more, recorded around the world with some fascinating musicians, including Shankar, Ayub Ogada, Bill Bruford, Manu Katche and Jerry Marotta. Complete with diaries, photos, and artwork by Tony.

World Diary is Tony Levin's first solo CD and, as you might expect from the bassist and Stick player with Peter Gabriel and King Crimson, it's an unusual project. World Diary presents instrumental duets, trios and more, recorded around the world with some fascinating musicians. This is not only an album of ambitious music and world class players, it is a document of two years on the road, of what can happen off stage, of hotels and houses, of trains and echoes. The performances, combined with Tony's diaries and photos, tell a story of a journey of musical fulfillment. Tony performs with Shankar, violin and vocal, in a room in the Atlantic Hotel in Hamburg, duets with King Crimson colleague Bill Bruford at Bruford's house. Tony plays electric double bass in the Hotel Royal Monceau in Paris with Levon Minassian on doudouk. Others with whom he collaborates on the CD are: Ayub Ogada - nyatiti & vocal, Brian Yamakoshi - koto, Bendik - tenor sax, Nexus - a five man percussion ensemble, Manu Katche - drums, and Jerry Marotta - drums. In addition to Stick and electric upright, Tony also uses his patented Funk Fingers on the bass as the tour winds through Oslo, Toronto, Paris, and Bath.

Tony says, "Even though I was familiar with the playing of these wonderful musicians, I've been surprised - again - by the magic of how a great player can pour out his soul through his instrument. I strove to maintain an atmosphere where we could be free to create as we wished, and capture it all on tape. I think there's something interesting about recording in a hotel; each track, in a way, reflects where it was recorded. There's nothing slick about this music, and I like that."

With the freedom of not having to comply with a normal record company budget, Tony has designed an unusual package for his cd, using his hand-tinted b&w photos, in a cardboard container, devoid of plastic, which is reminiscent of old lp covers. The booklet inside contains b&w photos and Tony's diaries of the days of recording.

Fans know Tony Levin primarily as the bassist for King Crimson and for Peter Gabriel, but his career has always been far more complex than that — he's played all over the world with musicians from diverse cultures and backgrounds, and given his status as both a bass virtuoso and as one of the very few players of the Chapman Stick (a 12-stringed instrument designed to be played simultaneously as a bass and as a guitar), he's constantly in demand. This album was the first release on his own Papa Bear label, and it documents a number of privately-recorded collaborations and experimental jam sessions with various musicians recorded during his travels around the world. The results vary significantly in style and tone, but the quality is consistently high-the album opens with a lovely duo improvisation between Levin (on Stick) and Indian violinist Shankar (on his trademark double-necked electric violin) and proceeds through similar collaborations with the Kenyan musician Ayub Ogada, koto player Brian Yamakoshi, doudouk player Levon Minassian and others. Perhaps the most lovely piece is "We Stand in Sapphire Silence," an improvisation between Levin, Yamakoshi and drummer Jerry Marotta, on which Levin and Yamakoshi take turns setting the mood. There's an overall sweetness of spirit in evidence here that is, ultimately, almost as rewarding as the music itself. Wonderful.
