Kenny G's breakthrough effort featured the hit "Songbird," which is the definitive example of the saxophonist's smooth, lyrical playing; the rest of the album is nearly as good, highlighting his melodic jazzy pop.

This is the album that launched the career of smooth jazz's biggest star. Kenny G's easily digestible style has made him simultaneously adored and reviled, but his contributions to the genre are undeniable. It's nothing new for instrumental artists to top charts or sell huge numbers of albums, none had done so for many years prior to Kenny's appearance on the scene. Even Kenny didn't score big his first time out -- DUOTONES was his fourth album -- but when he hit, he hit in a major way. The album sold millions of copies, the hit "Songbird" was a Top Five smash that remains a radio staple, and Kenny became (and remains) the biggest-selling instrumental artist in music history. DUOTONES is filled with lovely moments: Tunes such as "Sade," "Midnight Motion," "Champagne," and "Don't Make Me Wait for Love" all demonstrate Kenny's talent for creating engaging melodies. But he's not only about pretty, sweet lullabies. "Slip of the Tongue," with its light groove, reveals a more assertive, muscular side, and Kenny even gets funky on the vocal track "What Does It Take (to Win Your Love)."
