2006 CD Sony-BMG 02679

The third album from multi national opera boy band Il Divo is the follow up to 2005's smash 'Acora'. The band continue their assault on the charts with this skilfully fused combination of pop and classical music, producing a uniquely enchanting sound. With tracks sung in English, Spanish and Italian, Il Divo bring a fresh approach to classics including 'YouRaise Me Up' and 'Without You'.

With its second full-length album of 2006, SIEMPRE, the dapper Simon Cowell-created vocal group Il Divo reinforces its commitment to keeping its adoring fans well stocked with dramatic interpretations of songs from the pop and classical canons. This time around the strikingly handsome international quartet of David Miller, Urs Buhler, Sebastien Izambard, and Carlos Marin offer up a romantic Italian rendition of the evergreen Moody Blues ballad "Nights in White Satin" ("Notte Di Luce") and a smooth Spanish take on Bryan Adams's "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" ("Un Regalo Que Te Dio La Vida"), resulting in yet another dazzlingly operatic yet highly accessible outing.

Continuing their string of overtly sentimental albums, the multinational Il Divo released their fourth (including The Christmas Collection) full-length, Siempre, which contains more of the same Latinized versions of pop songs, as well as some originals (written by their producers). All four Divos sound professional and emotional, especially Spanish baritone Carlos Marin, who seems on the verge of tears every time he opens his mouth. The arrangements for the songs (including West Side Story's "Somewhere" - the only one that's in English - and the Italian version of the Moody Blues' "Nights in White Satin," among others) are always very clean, with soft acoustic guitars and pianos backed by subtle yet swelling strings, adding to the romanticized idea and portrayal of the group. To be fair, all four are very talented vocalists, and they manage to make Bryan Adams' "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" sound even more profound and sensitive when they sing it in Spanish, and their phrasing on both "Without You" (originally made famous by Harry Nilsson) and Lucio Dalla's "Caruso" (with some of the lyrics cut out, despite the fact they're all listed in the album booklet) is excellent, drawn out to pull as much emotion as possible from each of the songs. Siempre is exactly what you would expect from Il Divo, so if you want more of what they've already given, it should be a satisfying record.

Siempre, Il Divo's third swipe at the snobs who aim to relegate classical crossover to retirement community socials and suburban dentist offices, is as apt to snare listeners as either of its first two multimillion-selling discs: the singing is as rich and romantic, and the material as warm and enveloping. If there's anything missing, it's an overdue sense of adventure - tracks like "Nights in White Satin" and "Somewhere," like "Unbreak My Heart" and "All by Myself" before them, provide enough adult-contemporary swagger to keep anyone who has owned a couple of Streisand CDs in his or her day happy, but they come at the expense of a full-on exploration of classical no man's land; which may be this prefab, Simon Cowell-helmed act's ticket to getting out from under critics' boot heels. "La Vida Sin Amor," "Un Regalo Que Te Dio La Vida," and "Una Noche" - Siempre's three boldest tracks--provide a taste, but for now Il Divo seems content to follow a safe-bet formula. Fans won't be disappointed - overall, this is a lush, wholly unblemished disc. But those who have been taken to task by high-minded music bullies before shouldn't be surprised if they feel the need to keep the mute button handy once again.

Simon Cowell's most ambitious vision yet - a multinational quartet of opera singers that sound like The Three Tenors and look like Armani models - has paid enormous dividends. Comprised of renowned Spanish opera and zarzuela baritone Carlos Marin, classically trained tenors Urs Buhler (Switzerland) and David Miller (USA), and French pop singer Sebastien Izambard, the group has enraptured minds – not to mention bodies – with studio albums such as Il Divo and Ancora. Il Divo's third album, Siempre (Always) continues their popular fusion of classical and pop with 11 more covers and original songs. New arrangements of moonlit classics such as "Nights In White Satin" (sung in Italian), "Without You" and "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" (both in Spanish), plus a new version of John Miles' evergreen "Music" (specially re-arranged by Miles himself) are sure to delight fans, as will the quartet's own compositions, which include the enchanting "Amor Venme A Buscar" and "Una Noche". A bonus rendition of West Side Story hit "Somewhere" completes yet another winning set from the most sophisticated (and well-dressed) boy-band in the world.

If you couldn't get tickets - or couldn't afford them -- to hear Il Divo perform on Barbra Streisand's 2006 tour, don't worry: The photogenic foursome return to a CD player near you with Siempre, their fourth album of multilingual pop-operatic romance. Fans of Carlos, David, Sebastien, and Urs will get exactly what they've come to expect from the quartet: four gorgeous voices that blend together to equal more than the sum of their parts. But Siempre, largely Latin in flavor, also marks a real breakthrough for the group. Their initial success may have been manufactured by musical mastermind Simon Cowell, but after singing together for a few years, they sound more comfortable, confident, and dynamic than ever. With their unique combination of voices, they can't help but make every song their own -- whether it's a translation of the Moody Blues' "Nights in White Satin" (Notte di Luce) or of Bryan Adams's "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" (Un Regalo Que Te Dio La Vida), or even the evergreen "Somewhere" from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. If there's any doubt that four voices can be more seductive than one, compare their version of "Caruso" with Josh Groban's or Andrea Bocelli's. But fans will need no convincing that the gentlemen of Il Divo have more than earned their place at the top of the crossover pops.
