2009 sophomore album. If their debut could easily be the soundtrack for the beautifully haunted world of Twin Peaks, their sophomore effort would be their leap into the blockbuster mainstream. There s a formidable richness here, a glorious depth and maturity and growth which takes the Howling Bells sound into hitherto unexplored terrain, aided, in no small part, by the expertise of producer extraordinaire Dan Grech-Marguerat.

Recorded with help from prolific British super-producer Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Paul McCartney), 'Radio Wars' is the second album from Australian indie-rockers Howling Bells. Following the huge critical success of their debut the band jumped record labels to Independiente Records. The album features an equally impressive collection of songs, likely to please existing fans as well as gain the band a larger following. Includes the single 'Into The Chaos'.



Die vier Australier um Sängerin Juanita Stein und ihren Bruder Joel Stein zogen 2005 nach London, um ihre Karriere von dort aus ins Rollen zu bringen. Als Simon Raymonde (Ex-Cocteau Twins) sie entdeckte, war er sofort begeistert und holte das Quartett, das durch Bassist Brendan Picchio und Schlagzeuger Glenn Moule komplettiert wird, zu seinem Indielabel Bella Union (u.a. The Dears, My Latest Novel, Dirty Three). Das selbstbetitelte Debüt wurde im vergangenen Jahr mit dem berühmten Coldplay-Produzenten Ken Nelson produziert, im Frühling 2006 veröffentlicht. Auch die englische Presse ist voll des Lobes und bescherte den Howling Bells vom NME über The Guardian bis hin zur Sun durchweg begeisterte Kritiken. Wie schon ihr Debütalbum besticht auch das zweite Album der Band durch eingängige Melodien und mitreißende Hooks, untermalt von gelegentlich verzerrten Gitarren und wirbelnden, scheppernden Drums. Mit dem neuen Album hat sich die Band mehr in Richtung Pop gewand, ohne dabei aber langweilig zu werden. Songs wie "Into The Chaos" & "Cities Burning Down" sind absolute Ohrwürmer, die nicht mehr aus dem Kopf zu bekommen sind. Der stellenwiese etwas düstere Sound, vor allem bei den ruhigeren Stücken erinnert hier und da an Nick Cave, The Duke Spirit, PJ Harvey oder gar die zwielichtige Atmosphäre von David Lynch Filmen. Die eindringliche Stimme von Juanita Stein geht dabei durch Mark und Bein, schwebt gelegentlich verschwörerisch hauchend, teils aber auch glasklar über dem Ganzen und jagt einem wohlige Schauer über den Rücken.
