Spectrum is a collection of 15 new songs from the legendary Yes guitarist, Steve Howe. Recorded in Switzerland during the Winter of 2004 / 2005, Spectrum gloriously showcases Steve's unique talent and his unmistakable style. Joined this time by Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel) on bass, Oliver Wakeman (son of Yes's Rick Wakeman) on keyboards, and Steve's own sons, Virgil and Dylan on Moog synthesizer and drums respectively, Spectrum is a wonderful display of instrumental prowess from one of progressive rock's founding fathers.


    
Der Name Steve Howe sollte dem Musik-Interessierten durch das u.a. jahr(zehnt)elange Schaffen bei YES ein Begriff sein im Juni erschien die mittlerweile 11 Solo-Scheibe des Meister, der inzwischen über eine Diskographie verfügt, die so lang ist, dass sie nicht auf eine DIN A4 Seite passt! Und was immer ich auch schreibe, viele werden denken - gebt's zu - 'Ja wird halt wieder die übliche instrumentale Dudelei sein!' Wird es gelingen, diese Vorbehalte zu entkräften und zumindest den ein- oder anderen zu bewegen, wenigstens einmal in diese schönen Klänge hineinzulauschen ? "Spectrum" nannte Steve seine Platte und ein sehr weites ebensolches deckt diese musikalische Reise ab, in vielen Stilen wildernd, trotzdem nicht wirr oder konzeptionslos erscheinend.

Das ohne Gesang auskommende Album bietet auf einer Stunde in den 15 Stücken im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes ein SPEKTRUM unterschiedlicher Klänge und Stilarten, ohne zerfahren oder diffus zu wirken. Und Howe bringt es fertig, trotz der mannigfaltigen Einflüsse von Jazz über Blues, sogar Reggae bis hin zu Country und Weltmusik die Angelegenheit stets homogen und nie effektheischend wirken zu lassen. Seine Gitarre strahlt eine sanfte Ruhe, Eleganz und Sicherheit aus, wie das nur bei wenigen Gitarristen der Fall ist. Mit der Einschränkung des Stückes "Ragga Of Our Times", das mir aufgrund seiner wabernden Tabla- und Sitarklänge überhaupt nicht gefällt, und vielleicht noch 2 Füller legt Steve Howe hier ein wunderbares Album vor, das man immer wieder gerne anhört.

Und sein Talent scheint im übrigen vererbbar zu sein : Steve wird unterstützt durch gleich zwei seiner Söhne : Dylan Howe am Schlagzeug und Virgil Howe am Keyboard und hinter demselben sitzt auch ein weiterer Sohn eines äußerst bekannten Musikers, Oliver Wakeman, Filius von Rick! Gestattet mir, den Künstler selbst noch zu zitieren, denn die Musik spiegelt genau das wieder, was er sagt: "Die Musik, nach der ich suchte, sollte Selbstvertrauen, Frische und ein Gefühl des 'Obenseins' atmen. Ich wollte sie mit meinem Zugang zum Leben infizieren, mit Liebe, Optimismus und Natürlichkeit". "Spectrum" ist eines der fesselndsten Instrumental-Alben geworden, dass ich den letzten Jahren gehört habe und rangiert sogar innerhalb meiner Favoriten-Liste für die Top 10 des Jahres 2005 !

True believers in the prog rock gospel don't really need to know anything about this disc beyond the fact that it's a solo album by Yes, Asia, and GTR alumnus Steve Howe. Prog rock agnostics will be a bit more wary, but may take comfort from the power-trio instrumentation and from the presence of bassist Tony Levin, who is the very Buddha of taste and professionalism. Between the stripped-down format and the presence of Levin, it would be reasonable to expect that things are going to stick pretty close to the rock & roll verities. And as it turns out, you'd be right. Too right, in fact. If Spectrum has a problem, it's not that Howe indulges himself in long, self-absorbed displays of pointless noodling -- on the contrary, he limits himself to pedestrian rock clichés. For the most part, this album is utterly pleasant and, if anything, too modest in its scope. Whether it's the pretty but unexciting "Labyrinth" or the equally unexceptional "Ultra Definition," Howe sounds as if he's basically just going through the motions here, spinning out melodies that appeal at a certain basic level but don't offer anything of substance or interest. There are exceptions to this rule, both good (the fun, jazzy blues of "Fools Gold") and bad (the bloated mess that is "In the Skyway") and one utter disaster: "Livelihood," on which his solos are so simplistic and clumsy that he sounds as if he's abdicated his guitar to a 16-year-old. But for the most part this album is completely inoffensive and will do fine for driving down the road on a late summer evening. Just don't expect it to get any parties started
