A Meditative Journey Through Time/Musikalische Zeitreise in zeitlose Innenwelten/Voyage musical en dehors du temps

No other vocal group has so persistently shown just how "new" old music can seem. Since its formation in 1974, Britain's Hilliard Ensemble has explored the pre-baroque era as well as the 20th Century. Their performance of music written before often amounts to re-creations, uncovering points of congruence with contemporary composition, and improvising ("like a jazz band" says tenor John Potter) within the old forms. "The constant re-invention of our music is one of the ways we can make very old music live in the present. The music feels different from day to day as we respond to it in new ways, both as a group and as individuals."

The distinctive style of the Ensemble has given it a formidable reputation in both early and new music. Aside from its core repertoire of music written before 1600, the Ensemble is establishing close links with contemporary composers, including Arvo Pärt, Gavin Bryars, Heinz Holliger, Edward Cowie, Brian Elias, John Tavener and John Casken. ECM New Series has recorded the Hilliard Ensemble in a diverse and innovative range of music: from Gesualdo's Tenebrae Responsories and the work of Walter Frye to Arvo Pärt's choral works and two new pieces by Gavin Bryars on Vita Nova. Following on the success of Officium, their highly acclaimed collaboration with Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek the Hilliard Ensemble has recently release Codex Specialnik.
