2007 CD Ya basta YAB019CD1

Initial pressings include a bonus enhanced disc with a video by Prisca Lobjoy.

The debut by this Paris based trio is a relaxed blend of tango dance rhythms and Argentinean instrumentation. The group was brought together by their passion to combine sound with image and to marry electronic and acoustic music. They built on their house, dub, and hip-hop influenced productions by adding two of Argentina's finest tango musicians, the musical result being supremely distinctive, incorporating bandonion (a form of accordion), violin, and vocals. This release includes 2000's most memorable jazz-house hit, "Triptico", which has already sold over 400,000 copies worldwide. The US version features the original ten tracks from the European release, along with a special bonus disc of the "Santa Maria" video plus four audio tracks.

(XL/Beggars Banquet) In the constant hunt for the Next Big Thing and the nourishment of their creative souls, a growing number of adventurous DJs are developing their craft through the prisms of culture and tradition. Last year's URB Next 100 alumni Gotan Project shrewdly combines tango rhythms and Astor Piazzolla with dub and downtempo, producing old-world atmospheres, hot-blooded romance and undeniably tasty chill music. The French collective's use of tango flows naturally from that particularly Parisian emphasis on glamour that the dance has come to exemplify, despite its seedy origins in the brothels of late-19th-century Argentina. Familiar pieces of melody, like the theme from "Last Tango In Paris" and a reggae version of Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge," float to the surface like hot and ghostly dreams. Everything sounds at once familiar and foreign, like all your past lives gathered around a turntable and having at it.

Matthew Cooke - From URB Magazine

Released in Europe in 2001, La Revancha Del Tango’s sexy combination of chillout programming and authentic tango music became a lounge favorite and led to massive sales. Lightning struck twice when it was released two years later in the States--the domestic debut attracted the attention of electronic music hipsters, tango freaks, and world music geeks. And rightfully so. The Gotan trio of Philippe Cohen Solal, Christoph H. Müller, and Eduardo Makaroff write the album's strongest material themselves, but their imaginative incorporation of Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge," Gato Barbieri's theme from the movie Last Tango In Paris and, not surprisingly, Astor Piazzolla's "Vuelvo Al Sur" into the Gotan world shows just how broad and inclusive their tastes really are. Naysayers may complain that this album can be heard in every hip restaurant and clothing boutique from Paris to Los Angeles, but sometimes the cream does rise to the top and gain mass acceptance, as it has here. Also includes a bonus disc of four remixes.

Phillippe Cohen Solal clearly enjoys pushing boundaries, having already shown the dance music universe just how flexible a tango rhythm can be on Gotan Project's 2001 release La Revancha Del Tango. Inspiracion-Espiracion doesn't do anything new, exactly, but this sprawling mix of new tracks, remixes, guest DJs, Astor Piazzolla, and poetry readings doesn't lack for audaciousness. With a soulful mixer like Solal at the wheel, it's a pretty smooth ride; a reinterpretation of Chet Baker's "Round About Midnight" segues into the beat-driven "Confianzas" like a darkening sky giving way to moonlight. Downtempo master Peter Kruder shows up as well, to weave a little football commentary into his remix of "Triptico," while Solal returns the favor (but without the football) on "The Man" (from Kruder's Peace Orchestra release). Last but not least, check out the bonus CD, featuring a previously unreleased GP track and a video from longtime visual collaborator Prisca Lobjoy.

The French remix team behind the Gotan Project found much success, including a BBC World Music award, with their debut, La Revancha del Tango, which gave Argentina's signature dance an electronica makeover. The fusion was inevitable, as tango's avant-gardist tendencies and noir moods lend themselves well to this kind of update. If the "tango assassin," Astor Piazzolla, were alive and pursuing his mission to modernize the music, he'd doubtless be experimenting with bleeps and beats. The breadth of this ferment is felt on the Gotan's second full-length release, an album of remixes by the trio and from their admirers, including Thomas Kruder and the indie soundtracks band Calexico. They also pay homage to Piazzolla with a version of his "Cité Tango" and deconstruct a Chet Baker solo from "Round About Midnight." A bonus disc features a new song by the band and a 10-minute video by Prisca Lobjoy, a frequent collaborator. Unlike the sustained mood of their debut, the mix-tape feel of this collection delivers an intimate journey, away from the dance floor (at least some of the time) into the darkest quarters of the listener's mind.

Mark Schwartz - Barnes & Noble

For the Gotan Project, crossing borders is as easy as crossfading. These world music beat nuts bring a mixtape mentality (sans that guy yelling “EXCLUSIVE!”) to their most recent release, reaching across genres (and into the crates) to create a laid-back grab bag of dance grooves. From Astor Piazzolla’s Argentinian neuvo tangos to Al-Shid and J-Zone's BK boom bap, Inspiración - Espircación is an eclectic compilation of original recordings and Gotan remixes, all wrought with downtempo delicacies and South American soul.
