Lindsey Buckingham's departure proved to be a severe blow when Fleetwood Mac unveiled a new lineup with the disappointing Behind the Mask, Stevie Nicks' last album with the band. Nicks, Christine & John McVie and Mick Fleetwood are joined by new members Rick Vito (vocals, lead guitar) and Billy Burnette (vocals, guitar) on this generally weak effort. The production (courtesy of Greg Ladanyi and Fleetwood Mac) is often bland and faceless, and most as the songs are among the least inspired the band ever recorded. The album has a few strong points, including "Save Me" and "Freedom," a haunting number featuring Nicks. But most of the material is quite forgettable. And there would be even less reason for optistim by 1993, when Nicks left as well.

Behind The Mask markiert einen neuen Abschnitt für die Westcoast-Rocker. Weil die beiden neuen Gitarren-Macs Billy Burnette und Rick Vito die Stilpalette nun etwas breiter fächern, kommt das Rockelement mehr zum Tragen. Love Is Dangerous oder Stand On The Rock, beide von Vito (co- )komponiert, lassen den Gitarren die Leinen los, haben durch ihren treibenden Beat das Zeug zu Hits. Eher die alten Qualitäten symbolisieren Save Me oder das von Stevie Nicks mit Mike Campbell (Tom Petty) geschriebene Freedom.

Ein neues Kapitel in der unendlichen Geschichte der Band namens Fleetwood Mac: Lindsey Buckingham, der als Sänger, Gitarrist und Hitkomponist für den Millionenerfolg der Alben "Fleetwood Mac" (1975), "Rumours" (1977) und ihrer Nachfolger maßgeblich mitverantwortlich war, quittierte 1987, just als "Tango In The Night" zu einem triumphalen Höhenflug ansetzte, den Dienst. Seinen Platz nahmen gleich zwei Sänger und Gitarristen ein: Rick Vito und Billy Burnette. Die neue Formation stellte sich schon auf dem "Greatest Hits"-Sampler (1988) mit zwei Songs vor und legt jetzt ihr erstes, von Greg Ladanyi und allen Bandmitgliedern co-produziertes Album vor. Was hat sich musikalisch geändert? Nun, nicht viel. Vito und Burnette eröffnen zwar mit dem Cajun-Rocker "When The Sun Goes Down" ein für Fleetwood Mac neues Terrain, und eine leichte Hinwendung der Band zu schwergewichtig rockendem Musizieren ist ebenfalls festzustellen. Doch grundsätzlich bleibt Fleetwood Mac die hochkarätige Popmaschinerie, die sie in den letzten anderthalb Jahrzehnten war. Stevie Nicks' Stücke "Affairs Of The Heart" und "Freedom" und besonders Christine McVies Titelsong, ihr Albumauftakt "Skies The Limit" sowie "Save Me" weisen die Hitqualitäten auf, die man von den Kompositionen der beiden Rockladies ge- wohnt ist. Und an Rick Vitos "Stand On The Rock", Billy Burnettes "Hard Feelings" oder dem gitarrenlastigen "In The Back Of My Mind" dürften nur unverbesserliche Buckingham-Fans, die seinen näselnden Tenor vermissen, keinen Gefallen finden. Fleetwood Macs popmusikalische Ressourcen scheinen auch in der x-ten Inkarnation unerschöpflich.
