Jalmon With Salmon just happened in the studio. Bill snapped the machine on when he heard how good it was sounding. We didn't know he was recording us. Malone, OMAC and Mbanza are free improvised solos performed with no preperation.
Recorded during spring and early summer of 1983. Special thanks to all the musicians, for outdoing themselves once again and to Bill Vorndick for an excellent job.
This album is dedicated to the memory of Steve Goodman.

Deviation is a stunning evolution of the string band tradition, brilliantly arranged and brimming with extemporaneous fireworks. Deviation is also Bela Fleck's very personal vision of the past, present and future, and represents the apotheosis of his eight years with the New Grass Revival. Deviation finds Fleck at the crossroads of his art, already moving beyond the august conventions of bluegrass - his obvious affection for the letter and spirit of that music notwithstanding - towards the uncharted territory later explored by Bela Fleck & the Flecktones.'

from the liner notes by Chip Stern

Deviation is an album by American banjoist Béla Fleck, released in 1984. It was recorded with the second classic line-up of the New Grass Revival, consisting of Béla Fleck, Sam Bush, John Cowan and Pat Flynn.

ROLLING STONE ALBUM GUIDE *** "'Deviation' may be more like a bluegrass album than 'Double Time' is, but because Fleck cut the album with his then-bandmates in the New Grass Revival, there's plenty of experimen- tation."
